Take in the vistas of one of Málaga's picturesque churches, San Juan, from this home's sunny rooftop terrace (accessed via a spiral staircase). There's also a small balcony (standing room only) from where you can watch the world go by on the street below. On that note, you're likely to hear some city noise here, but that's to be expected because this home's location is excellent. You'll find the Catedral de la Encarnación de Málaga, the Museo Carmen Thyssen and the Plaza de la Constitución, all within a short walk.

Tucked away above a pedestrianised shopping street in Málaga's historic centre, this first-floor apartment offers a fantastic base for first-time visitors looking to get under the skin of the city. 

In the not-too-distant past, visitors to Spain's Costa del Sol would transit through Málaga as swiftly as possible en route to their coastal all-inclusive. However, those days are long gone, and the city has undergone something of a cultural revolution in recent years. Its once-overlooked centre now brims with eye-catching art galleries and chic independent boutiques, with the riverside creative district of Soho just a short walk away.

The apartment's interior eschews Soho's street art aesthetic in favour of a more timeless mid-century-inspired style. Think elegant wooden furniture and eye-catching artwork, with plenty of the building's original features on display, including exposed beams lining the ceilings and French doors that open out to a Juliet balcony and the atmospheric streets below.

Things can heat up in the summer, so we'd recommend fitting in some sightseeing in the mornings and spending your afternoons at the beach. Handily, Málaga's best beach – Playa de la Malagueta – isn't too far away by bike or bus. Alternatively, there are more picturesque options further along the coast, with the seaside towns of Nerja and Benalmádena within driving distance.

Magnificent Malaga is in many ways the perfect city break – it’s a walkable city with plenty to see and do, and there are beaches galore for when you want to cool off in the sea and get some R&R. Best of all, it’s home to beautiful apartments like this oh-so-special penthouse. 

This apartment can be found in the heart of the city, looking directly onto the Sagrado Corazon church. It’s stylish and quirky, with chic decor and some of the best views in town. Whether you’re cooking in the kitchen or taking a quick siesta, you’re surrounded by the view of church towers and picturesque rooftops. The crowning glory of this already wonderful penthouse is the terrace. A carefully landscaped space, this is where we’d be spending most of our time. The barbecue and dining table make it a haven for alfresco dining, with comfy sofas just calling out for cocktail hour. During the day, you can soak up the sunshine on the sun loungers, moving to the shade of an umbrella to sip lemonade when the Spanish sun gets too hot. 

As the sun begins to set, you’ll have the best seats in town. Watch the sky shift into pastel pinks and purples as the sun dips behind the church spires. You’ll never want to leave.

Inside, wood floors and an industrial-style brick effect wall create an instantly stylish impression in the open-plan living area. Make yourself comfortable on the Chesterfield-reminiscent sofa with a glass of Spanish wine after a day of sightseeing, or perch by the bedroom’s Juliet balcony with your drink of choice as you people-watch from your privileged position. Speaking of the bedroom, you’ll immediately notice the replica of Picasso’s famous Guernica – a striking nod to the artist who was born in Málaga and whose nearby home is now a museum. 

What’s more, you’ve got access to the shared rooftop terrace’s pool with its panoramic views over the city’s rooftops and towards the beautiful Cathedral of Málaga.

While you could easily spend all day chilling out in your chic apartment and soaking up some rays by the communal pool, venture outside for a wealth of historic sightseeing with countless cultural hotspots within easy walking distance. You’re also 2 kilometres from sandy Playa de la Malagueta, while your host is happy to organise various golf and day trip excursions for those looking to explore a little further.

Location-wise, this apartment in the cultural Centro Histórico absolutely nails it. Not only are historical sites, restaurants and beaches all within walking distance, but you're only a quick stroll from the 15th-century Santo Domingo de Guzman Church and some of Malaga’s most famous landmarks. The Interactive Music Museum and Picasso Museum can be reached within minutes, while the golden sands of Playa la Malagueta are just a little further – about a twenty-minute walk.

When you're not out exploring, unwind from the day's adventures in your Andalusian oasis. With the floor-to-ceiling doors open and the sun shining through, it's the definition of relaxation. Although the style is a picture of modernity, you can still spot some Spanish influences in the warm peachy hues and original tiled balconies. Our favourite room has to be the open living room –  you can cosy up on the dusty rose sofa with a glass of sangria and nibble on freshly prepared tapas amongst the Rothko-inspired artwork. And as evening comes around, settle on the balcony overlooking the charming streets below.

If you like a bit of culture, then this home’s location in Málaga’s Centro Histórico is spot-on. You’ll find the Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Picasso Museum nearby, and the Catedral de Málaga, with its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles, is also within walking distance. With private balconies (quite small, mind) and views of la Plaza de la Constitución, this pad is ideal for enjoying a bit of Malaga’s sun. Inside, it’s decorated in neutral tones, and the main bedroom opens out onto a compact balcony too. Just make sure to pack earplugs – the central locale means noise is to be expected. 

I Dream of Málaga

Modern, comfortable and enviably located in the heart of Málaga, this apartment is an excellent choice for a small family or close-knit group of friends. Nature-inspired interior design creates a harmonious and cosy atmosphere. When you’re refuelled and raring to go, embark on a walking tour around the city. You’re 350 metres from the Catedral de la Encarnación de Málaga, 600 metres from the Picasso Museum and and equally easy stroll from the medieval Alcazaba. Whet your whistle in a nearby taberna then mosey over to Malagueta Beach (2 kilometres away) for a spot of sunbathing and a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean.
