Housed in a building that was once home to 18th-century writer and philosopher Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, this beautifully curated apartment blends history and modern comforts in dazzling style. Featuring sparkling white walls decked with mirrors and earthy-toned artworks, there’s a feeling of bohemian chic in the carefully chosen ornaments that bring together the home’s minimalist aesthetic to great effect. Make yourself comfortable on the inviting sofa with a glass of Spanish wine or gather around the dining table for an at-home tapas feast when you’re not out sampling La Latina’s renowned restaurant and bar scenes. The bedroom, meanwhile, is a calm and comfortable space designed with a dreamy night’s sleep in mind, and there’s even a desk space here too should the building’s authorly history inspire you to pen some prose. Factor in the thoroughly modern bathroom with its luxurious rainfall shower, and you’ve got everything you need for a carefree, relaxing stay. When it comes to sightseeing, your La Latina neighbourhood offers a maze of narrow lanes filled with tapas bars and cantinas to discover, while bargain hunters won’t want to miss the El Rastro flea market held each Sunday, a ten-minute walk away. Elsewhere,... bustling Plaza Mayor is a nine-minute walk, the Royal Palace of Madrid is a fifteen-minute stroll and the world-famous Museo Nacional del Prado is eighteen minutes away on foot.

Home truths
This home is on the ground floor, accessed via a communal courtyard
At capacity, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room – this will be at the expense of lounge space, however, so we think this home is better suited to two adults
The bedroom doesn't have any external windows, so lacks natural light. There is also limited natural light in the apartment overall.
There's a laptop-friendly workspace
An initial supply of toiletries is provided
Out of respect for the neighbours, please keep noise levels to a minimum after 11 pm
You'll receive an in-person check-in
We recommend skipping the car here and using Madrid's public transport instead – La Latina station is a three-minute walk away

About Lavapiés
Like many neighbourhoods on the rise, Lavapiés proudly displays its rough edges. The Times Magazine has recently included it in the 50 best neighbourhoods to live in the world, and it’s not hard to understand its appeal. It’s a melting pot of cultures, bravely experimenting with international influences. Lavapiés is full of contrast — some streets have already embraced a more luxurious vibe with chic boutiques and fusion restaurants popping up every month, while others are still filled with artistic squats and street vendors. It’s the ultimate antidote to boredom.
