If you're in Lisbon to explore an authentic side of the city, Mouraria could be for you. A walk through the narrow streets is like going back in time. Known as the birthplace of Fado, the soul music of Portugal – it's become one of the city's most fashionable spots. Have a long lazy lunch at one of the traditional restaurants here or sample its African and Asian eateries (let your hosts make reservations for you). If you want to explore further, hop on the iconic Tram 28, which trundles through most of Lisbon's best-loved districts – it's just a three-minute walk away. You're within walking distance of many attractions too, such as Lisbon Cathedral and São Jorge Castle (both fifteen minutes on foot), while historic Alfama is a ten-minute saunter. Back at this apartment, we really love the quirky feel – it's adorned with several retro items (the typewriter and vintage school table are our favourites). This place has plenty of outdoor space (a patio and two balconies) – play some darts on the terrace or relax with a glass of wine or a coffee and enjoy some pastéis de nata. They are all provided by your lovely hosts Artur and Diogo, whose friendliness elevate this place beyond simply a comfortable and characterful home in a fantastic location.

About Mouraria

With street performers, Fado shows and lots of unmissable sights, Mouraria should be at the top of your list. A trip through its narrow streets is like stepping back in time, revisiting the rich cultural background even before the great earthquake of 1755. In fact, the story goes that Fado was born in Mouraria, and it’s since made its way to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Although it’s quite central, this neighbourhood has a strong local community and an independent art scene that will show you a side of old, nostalgic Lisbon that you won’t find anywhere else.
