If you're looking for a mesmerising lake view, this apartment will be tough to beat. Situated right on De Spuikom, this retreat offers stunning architectural features and open spaces that allow the line between the outside and inside to feel blurred. Showcasing minimalism at its best, this home is designed to let its exterior landscape shine – and with two balconies, guests will be able to soak up the waterfront panoramas at every moment. 

Expansive windows allow the light to flood the airy living space – ideal for spending mornings at the sleek dining table with pain perdu and coffee. Perfectly satiated, head out for a walk along the scenic paths in Maria Henrika Park or wade the waters off Ostend Beach and spend the afternoon on its golden sands. There are plenty of cycling paths here if you’re looking to explore by bike. For lunch, enjoy a bowl of mussels and crusty bread at one of the waterfront restaurants off of Klein Strand, a short drive away. Head home in the evenings to catch the sunset from your balcony, watching the sun dip behind the horizon with a glass of local wine.

On a small holiday development just meters from the beach, this home – built in 2020 – is smart and modern. With an upside-down arrangement to make the most of the views, it's stylish, comfortable and has a great, sunny position. On the ground floor, you'll find the bedrooms and bathroom, along with access to a pretty garden with a patio and lawn. The first-floor living space is open-plan, bright and well-thought-out. Cook in the well kitted-out kitchen, get comfy on the huge sofa or enjoy meals at home together – either indoors or out on the stunning balcony. Pale grey tiled floors, white walls and floor-to-ceiling windows create a cool, relaxing space, while houseplants and reindeer moss wall art add a touch of nature. Walk to the beach, cycle to the nearby children's fun park De Sierk or head further afield to explore Ostend (fifteen minutes by car) or Bruges (thirty minutes). There's a bike storage room in your home, a rental facility nearby if you haven't brought your own and there happens to be an excellent bakery just around the corner.

Unwind under the serene watch of the golden Buddha print, and step out onto your private balcony to soak up the sun and enjoy a cold bottle of Belgian beer. Perhaps our favourite thing about this home is the fact that it’s just a three-minute walk from Bredene Strand, meaning beach trips are as simple as crossing the street. If the weather turns (unlikely, on this sunny stretch of coastline) spend a day in the town's fortress museum Fort Napoleon, drive half an hour to explore Bruges, or simply relax in a home that's trendy and tranquil.

Bright, white and minimalist, this home on Belgium's coast is a smart choice for families and friends. Mornings start with freshly baked pastries and coffee on the upstairs balcony – and end there with glasses of wine as the sun sets. The large living area has got group dinners written all over it, thanks to the white dining table and rattan chairs, and a more beachy vibe from the woven pendants. Once you're done, curl on the corner sofa and make plans for the coming days. It's only a five-minute walk to the long stretch of Bredene Strand, with the Black Sea to cool off in, while the cultural city of Ostend is a 15-minute drive. Need some peace and quiet? There's a deep tub in the bathroom for soaking away any worries or curl up with a book underneath the skylights in the master bedroom.

This place has plenty of outdoor space – there's a shared garden with a lawn to enjoy here too. Relax in the bright and comfortable living space with its large windows and soothing neutral hues. This abode is perfect for small families – we love the cute lights around the bunk beds. Whip up some lunch in the modern white kitchen with some goodies from the local bakery – it's only 400 metres from this lovely home. Your hosts can arrange bicycle hire too, so explore Hippo Beach on bikes – it's around 700 metres away. Or, head to Ostend, just over a ten-minute drive and visit historic Fort Napoleon, along with the Mercator, a 1930s ship, now a floating museum.

Just steps from the beach, this modern apartment is the perfect choice for a seaside escape. Contemporary design abounds inside this three-bedroom home, but we think it's the location that really sets it apart. Jump on the tram and you'll be exploring the Belle Époque resort of De Haan in no time at all. Grab lunch in a seafront restaurant or just wander the seafront promenade, admiring the historic architecture. On lazier days, unwind on your apartment's balcony with a coffee - as it's southwest facing, you'll catch the sun most of the day. When you're not trying some local seafood or dipping frites in mayonnaise, rustle up a meal at home in the well-equipped kitchen. With a car, you can also check out your country surroundings, with the beautiful city of Bruges is only 30 minutes away. For more local jaunts,there's also storage space for bikes in your apartment building, so you'll have plenty of opportunity for exploring.

You'd be forgiven for thinking this apartment is in the middle of the countryside, and not a 15-minute walk from the sea. From your balcony, you'll admire panoramic views over the surrounding area, making this the perfect place to enjoy a relaxed breakfast with a coffee each morning. If you ever tire of the country views, take the tram into the centre of De Haan to soak up the traditional seaside atmosphere – this town was a popular Belle Époque resort, and its heritage can still be seen in the distinctive architecture. Enjoy a meal here in one of the seafood restaurants, then spend your day on the sand. Your apartment is a comfortable place to return to each day, where you can unwind on the large corner sofa and make a home-cooked meal in the kitchen, which features a combination microwave, dishwasher, and freezer. The washing machine and dryer will come in handy on longer stays, and you're bound to sleep well in the cosy bedrooms.

It may be on the smaller side, but Belgium's coastline still packs plenty of delights. This includes the seaside town of Bredene where you'll find this modern apartment.

On one side of the space, a huge glass door bathes the interior with ample amounts of natural light and also opens up to a balcony with enough room to sit out. Back inside, the furnishings and finishes are all contemporary in style, particularly the neutral colour scheme and the minimalist kitchen with a wealth of surface space for whipping up hearty dinners.

If you find that you're never quite in the mood to cook, there's a good selection of cafes and restaurants running along the road outside the building. More importantly, however, you won't fail to notice just how close the beach is — we're talking five minutes' walk, if that.

Coastal Gem

Only a thirty-five-minute drive from the hustle and bustle in Bruges lies the quiet, sprawling shores of Bredene Strand. Flanked on one side by lofty sand dunes and the other by the refreshing waters of the North Sea, this stretch of Belgium's coast is as relaxing as it sounds. 

You'll find this light-filled pad just a five-minute stroll from the beach. You're so close to the water, in fact, you can glimpse the rolling waves from the enormous windows – the perfect backdrop for pastries and coffee in the morning and cocktails come sunset. Out on the balcony, soak up the evening rays and bask in the invigorating salty air with a glass of Belgian white wine.

Understated and sleek, the pared-back design is all about crisp whites and Scandinavian simplicity. Sprawl out on the open-plan living area's orange leather sofas or gather around the dining table for a dinnertime soirée, feasting on mules-frites (steamed muscles and fries) or Flemish shrimp croquettes. 

Don't fancy cooking? There's a bevvy of restaurants practically on your doorstep, with even more choice to whet your appetite in Ostend, a thirteen-minute drive away. 

Drift Away

Hipster enough that it wouldn't look out of place in East London or New York's Brooklyn, this cool home is actually found in the seafront suburb of Vosseslag. There are plenty of eco-credentials to love about the spot, from solar panels on the roof to old crates repurposed into coffee tables and outdoor furniture. Interiors are equally as innovative as white walls are broken up with a bike, a blackboard wall, and 1950s style furniture. There are some more polished accents too; the blush pink bathroom feels very retro with Hollywood mirrors and a deep tub underneath the skylight for soaking while stargazing. French doors and floor-to-ceiling windows give the living-kitchen area plenty of natural light, perfect for colouring in on one of the mismatched chairs at the dining table or cooking up a storm on the hob. The wild unfenced garden has a trampoline, as well as a barbecue for evenings in the summer sun.

Take the tram into De Haan to admire the original architecture and enjoy a seafront meal – the seafood around here is to die for. If you're looking for more excitement, head to the watersports centre where you can try sailing or surfing. Spend your evening in a cosy bar or return to your apartment for a home-cooked meal, then curl up on the corner sofa for a night in front of the TV.
