This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. You’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this second-floor apartment, so keep that in mind. The third bedroom lacks some privacy, though the sliding doors allow you to partition it off from the living area. Just remember to bring you're walking shoes, as this home is on a bit of a hill and the apartment is on the first floor, with no lift (there are two flights of stairs to reach the door). We loved the light-filled living space, with its huge floor-to-ceiling windows and double-height ceilings. A dining table takes centre stage, encouraging lively breakfasts in the morning and hearty suppers in the evening. There’s also a cosy mezzanine level that is the perfect spot for reclining with a glass of wine before retreating to sumptuous bedrooms for an early night. 

Slip into the narrow cobbled streets and begin your sightseeing adventure. The 12th-century Porto Cathedral is six minutes from your doorstep and the Igreja dos Clérigos with its 75-metre-tall bell tower is reached in less than ten. When it’s time to call it a day, make a beeline for the Vitória viewpoint to watch dusk fall across the city.

Housed in a building dating from the 18th century – it's classed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been completely renovated inside, creating a modern, comfortable home. Later, get ready in the stylish bathroom for an evening out in Ribeira.

Down the neighbourhood's narrow, cobbled streets, you'll find cosy bars and eateries serving classic Portuguese cuisine. After dinner, take a stroll over to the iconic D. Luís Bridge, a short walk away and take some atmospheric nighttime shots.

Honestly, the maintenance needs a bit of work, and the terraces need tidying up, but the place is just so special. From the spectacular views of the Douro River to the beautiful azulejo tiles and the stone fireplace, it has a distinct soul and Porto charm that we simply can't get enough of – it feels like the kind of place we could spend a long time in. Whether you're drinking a chilled glass of Porto wine from the spacious terrace, taking a dip in the private pool or even washing up in the shower, you'll be able to appreciate the lovely views over the water. Inside, light pours in through the patio doors, creating a bright and airy living space to relax. Full of cream furnishings and neutral tones, it's a homely apartment too. Step outside of the building and be in the heart of Porto, and yet you'll find the immediate neighbourhood is quiet and friendly. Walk to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Museum Soares dos Reis in under ten minutes. You’ll need to climb the stairs to this apartment, but on arrival, you’ll find a comfortable space to relax and a private balcony overlooking the Porto rooftops. Just note that there's no oven here, so we'd recommend sampling the local eateries nearby. 

Clérigos Delight

This chic Porto bolthole had us with those dazzling views from the shared rooftop terrace alone. And that was before we'd even discovered its unbeatable location.

Set right in the historic heart of the city, Porto's must-see sights are just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Get off to a flying start at Clérigos Tower and Lello's Bookshop – both under a five-minute walk away. Then lose yourself to Riberia's zig-zagging streets (a fourteen-minute walk). Jam-packed with restaurants and hole-in-the-wall taverns, this district is a foodie haven. 

For those drawn to the evening bustle, you won't have far to go. The apartment stands along Rua Galeria de Paris, now synonymous with the Porto party scene. Though you may find all the ambience you need at home on the roof terrace with a few post-feast drinks as the streets bustle below.

Back downstairs, this home feels like a breath of fresh air to return to. And while it may be studio living, we think it's expertly formed with clean, uncluttered spaces and a hefty dose of natural daylight thanks to that bank of Juliet balcony doors.

It only feels right that this apartment found in the historic Ribeira neighbourhood of Porto is just as characterful on the inside as the surrounding area. Tropical house plants and an earthy colour scheme work well with the old stone walls, while the floating staircase and glass walls on the mezzanine level help natural light flow around the space. The kitchen and bathroom are full of sleek white surfaces, although the shower has been finished in a loud tesselating pattern to stop the space from feeling too bland. Breakfast can be provided by the host every day if so desired, which includes fresh bread and pastries delivered in the morning. The other piece of good news is that many of Porto's main attractions sit within easy walking distance from the front door. The neoclassical Palácio da Bolsa is three minutes' walk away and the city's cathedral takes seven.

Delicate and soft, this baby blue apartment has plenty of surprises waiting for you. We're swooning over the features – the coffered ceilings wouldn't be amiss in a royal palace, while the iron on the arched window is intricate and charming. Add in the cushy orange sofa, parquet flooring and decadently tiled bathroom and it's love at first sight. The layout is also unique – technically, it's more of a studio, but a glass wall keeps the bedroom separate from the living space. The kitchen is a little basic, but we don't mind – if anything, it gives you an excuse to sample the many delicious eateries in Porto.  

But the best part, by far, is the excellent location. Palácio da Bolsa is two minutes away, and there are cafes, bars and boutiques aplenty on your doorstep. Pretty much everything is within walking distance – be it markets or museums – so we think a couple or solo traveller will be happy to call this place home. Wander down the famous alleys of Ribeira do Porto (a four-minute walk), grab a cocktail at one of the riverside restaurants or just stroll along the Douro and soak up the magic of Porto.

This loft apartment in Porto has been cleverly designed to maximise the amount of space available. The black floating staircase in the middle of the living room could easily dominate the space, but its sleek form lets natural light from the French doors flow around the space well. Similarly, the minimalist dining table is so slim that you can miss it from certain angles. The floral feature wall adds a bit of personality to the interior and works well with the large house plant. The addition of the balcony is particularly welcoming and allows for lovely views of the city's terracotta rooftops. It feels perfectly peaceful up here, but there are lots of famous landmarks nearby. The baroque Igreja do Carmo is two minutes' walk around the corner, while the equally impressive Palácio da Bolsa can be reached in ten.

Ascend its two-hundred-and-twenty-five steps and be rewarded with sweeping panoramas across the city's terracotta-tiled rooftops and out towards the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

We love the vistas over the River Douro and the Gaia district from this home’s Juliet balconies and bedroom windows. Whilst the apartment is housed in a building dating from the 18th century, it’s been completely renovated inside. One thing to note, though, at full capacity, two people will be on a sofa bed in the living space. Situated in one of Porto’s picturesque districts, Ribeira – this apartment boasts an enviable location too. You’ll find a maze of cobbled medieval alleys, cosy bars, and eateries serving traditional cuisine. Attractions nearby include the iconic D. Luís Bridge and the beautiful Bolsa Palace.
