Peace and quiet await at this eye-catching, 300-year-old barn. It sits on the lakeside in idyllic Sonning Eye, an eight-minute drive from the buzzing shops and pretty high street of Henley-on-Thames. The highlight is the vast outdoor space where lawns provide space for ball games and there’s a dedicated basketball court. By the lakeside, a fire pit and seating area is the ideal spot for sundowners and there’s plenty of space to dine on the huge patio. The vast open-plan kitchen, living and dining room is a fabulous spot to socialise of an evening and there’s a second seating area in the Asian-inspired sitting room. Each ensuite bedroom feels hotel-level lavish.

While in 1895, Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in the county jail here and the experience drove him to write The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Known more these days for its annual Reading Festival, this vibrant town attracts nearly 100,000 music lovers every August to worship...
