Although it's on the longest street in all of Catalonia, Gran Vía, this stylish apartment is in a largely residential area and consequently, very quiet. It's high above in a slightly leafier area, so you can watch how the locals go about their daily lives from your private balcony. Bright and airy, the huge living room windows let the light flood in from the balcony. Inside is where Scandinavian decor meets a bold choice of colours and wallpaper prints. It's minimalist but tasteful, and the sea-themed artwork by a local artist in the dining area is a unique touch. Scour over city maps for the day's sightseeing itinerary while eating breakfast on the elegant ghost chairs. Centrally located, it's a great base to explore from. Foodies will love the proximity to the Michelin starred Adrià brothers' self-proclaimed 'gastronomic amusement park', comprising of five stunning restaurants in one neighbourhood. Or pick up fresh produce at the Boqueria Market, a twenty-minute stroll away, to bring back and prepare in the sleek kitchen. Culture buffs will be able to get their fix with a short half-hour walk to the Columbus Monument, while beachgoers are a seventeen-minute ride from the sandy coastline.

Home truths

We're admittedly quite a picky bunch, but the bedding is not as luxurious as we would want it to be

The balcony only seats two guests

The grouting in the bathroom is a bit tired-looking and could do with a bit of love and attention

Pets are allowed, but the host will charge an additional fee

The host has several nearly identical homes in a single building – minor design details may vary and you might be staying on a different floor
