When you think of a Scottish castle in The Lowlands, this is probably how you imagined it, with ancient stone walls and huge open fireplaces – and is that a hint of a turret? This is indeed a 16th Century tower, extended into an adjoining byre. The unusual thing here is it's intimacy. With just four bedrooms in the tower, and a fifth in the other part of the home. There are character features in every room, but its interior is more contemporary than you might expect. Elegant velvet sofas and mahogany floorboards create a luxurious feel, while plush beds and roll-top baths promise relaxation. There's a modern games room with a ping-pong table and various boardgames, as well as an entertainment room that has an extensive library collection. For us, the standout feature is the master bedroom, accessed by a separate staircase and at the very top of the tower, along with its en-suite bathroom – it's hard not to feel like Rapunzel. You can hold events here too. The lower floor of the byre can host wedding receptions, meetings and celebration dinners. Speak to the host if you'd like to know more.

This home is managed by Oliver

This home is managed directly by a business. A member of their staff will be your point of contact before and during your stay. Nearly twenty years ago, Oliver and his friend began curating the world's most unique and rustic getaways. Driven by their own unforgettable experience at a chateau, they have grown remarkably since then. Much like Plum, they believe in hand-picked luxury that doesn't break the bank.

This home is nominated for the Plum Guide Award.
