Do you have a question about this home or the local area?
One thing Lisbon is famed for is its hills. And staying here, you'll become well-equipped for taking on any future mountain climbs. Because this apartment is at the top of one of the Alfama district's steepest hills, leading up to São Jorge Castle. But boy, the climb is worth it. The cool breeze of your hilltop location is a summertime delight, and the apartment itself is a chic blend of minimalism and bright art fixtures to add a pop of personality. The view of the Tagus River from here is uncluttered and unrivalled, perfect for that majestic sunset. And when you can't face the hills, the nearby Santa Justa Lift will get you up (and down) in no time.

Home truths
This apartment is on the second floor of a building at the top of a steep hill. The view is undeniably worth it, but those who struggle with a climb may wish to look elsewhere
Four-legged friends are not able to stay in this home (and they'd likely struggle with the hills anyway)
The wi-fi here can be pretty patchy. We'd recommend this for guests who plan on being out and about for much of their stay
The street is not accessible by car.

About Mouraria
With street performers, Fado shows and lots of unmissable sights, Mouraria should be at the top of your list. A trip through its narrow streets is like stepping back in time, revisiting the rich cultural background even before the great earthquake of 1755. In fact, the story goes that Fado was born in Mouraria, and it’s since made its way to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Although it’s quite central, this neighbourhood has a strong local community and an independent art scene that will show you a side of old, nostalgic Lisbon that you won’t find anywhere else.
Explore the area
Local restaurants, cafes, museums, sites and activities, recommended by our community of hosts and travel experts
Enjoy the view from Castelo de São Jorge
The Castle and its walls have been protecting the city from invaders for many centuries. It is a great spot for taking photos of Lisbon's historical centre.
Ride the 28 Tram
Number 28 tram is better than any tour bus, passing through most of the popular tourist districts. The delightful trams date from the 1930s and riding them in an absolute adventure.
Dine out in a Circus School at Chapitô
This social project circus art school dedicated to young people also has a great restaurant and bar. You can even catch a performance or concert whilst you're there!
Enjoy a secret view from Miradouro do Recolhimiento
A hidden viewpoint with a small children's park where you can hide from the busy streets around the Castle.
Eat pastéis de nata at Confeitaria Nacional
Founded in 1829, Confeitaria Nacional is the oldest and most traditional bakery in Lisbon – they're still using recipes that were invented over 180 years ago.
Buy freshly grown produce at Prado Mercearia
Inspired by the early 20th-Century traditional grocery stores, Prado Mercearia is the most photogenic grocery store you'll see in Lisbon.
Pay tribute at Calçada de Amalia
In a tiny park close to Portas del Sol, there's a beautiful mosaic dedicated to one of the greatest fado singers of all time– Amalia Rodrigues.
Visit the indestructible Igreja São Domingos
This baroque church is famous for surviving two tragedies – the 1755 earthquake and the 1954 fire. Some parts were never restored, so you can come and see the damage left by the fire.
Watch the sunset at Miradouro de Graça
The official name for this viewpoint is Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, after the Portuguese poetess. The scenic view of Lisbon's rooftops is best enjoyed at sunset.
