From the moment you arrive at this historic palazzo, you'll feel like highly regarded members of Venetian nobility. Built in the late fifteenth century, the palace is traditionally considered the home of Desdemona, a character in William Shakespeare's play Othello. On arrival, you'll disembark your water taxi onto the jetty, where the concierge will usher you to your elegant apartment. Double-height windows framed by gothic arches open onto an ornate balcony with outstanding views across the Grand Canal. If you can break your gaze, the opulent interiors aren't bad either. With beautiful tapestries, gilded antiques and full-size chandeliers, it's fit for the Doge of Venice. Yet, despite its evident splendour, the apartment is a comfortable space where it's easy to feel at home. With Piazza di San Marco just a five-minute walk away, it's hard to know what to explore first. Hit the designer shops, stroll around Palazzo Ducale or people-watch in the piazza? The choice is yours. Whatever you decide, we'd recommend racing back to the balcony for the end of the day, watching the vaporettos cruise past and sipping a spritz as the sun sets.
