The city centre of Lucca is like a time capsule, where the walls have preserved the medieval age while the world progressed outside. You can almost hear the carriage wheels as you wander the ancient streets and this converted 1600s carriage house is the kind of grand abode fit for a rich medieval merchant. The original arches are now floor to ceiling windows, bathing the open living area in sunlight. Elegant touches – chandeliers, gilded mirrors and marble counters – create a sense of luxury inside. The private garden invites you to rest in the shade of centuries-old trees, a rare oasis in a town like Lucca. It’s not just a little nook either; there’s a manicured lawn, classic statues and beds bursting with hydrangeas. Take morning coffee under the pergola, aperativo on the wicker chairs on the patio, and dine at the table under the canopy. The main shopping street of Via Fillungo and the restaurant-filled Piazza San Michele are both practically on your doorstep. After a day in the city, that four-poster bed draped in furs is a dream to come home to.

There’s a buzzy nightlife scene centred around cool enotecas and craft beer bars. On Via Fillungo, you’ll find some of Lucca’s finest boutiques, with high-end...
