Just when you thought East London couldn't get quirkier or cooler, this little fireball rocks up. Set in the relaxed neighbourhood of Lower Clapton, the area is right next to buzzing Hackney, with great places to eat and drink and a young, creative feel. So it's a fitting location for an artist's residence that is so out there it's been featured in design magazines. The host, a freelance photographer and stylist, bought this flat in a 1930s warehouse-style building a few years ago and completely stripped it back to create a unique and colourful home. Decorated in a whirlwind of vintage fabrics, wall art and retro furniture, we particularly love the kitchen. But it's not all style and no substance – the orange plywood units make quite a statement but the kitchen is fully kitted out for cooking at home with quality appliances and plenty of basics supplied. There's a 1930s style bathroom with vintage fittings, a beautiful, calm bedroom and an office room. Head into central London in just forty-five minutes from Hackney Central station or just explore the surrounding areas of Dalston and Stoke Newington.
