Start your city-break escape just outside your door at the colossal National Museum. Packed to the rafters with natural history wonders and trinkets, it's an excellent introduction to this beguiling city. Then take a five-minute dander down to the historic Grassmarket for a rummage around its antique markets and a whiskey-tasting session when it's time to warm the cockles.
