This apartment is exactly what you want for a Venetian getaway. Step into the sixteenth century building, with its faded red brick walls and dark wooden beams lining the ceiling, and you’ll feel transported to another era. The apartment has been restored in traditional Venetian style, with hand painted antique furniture, ornate tiled floors, and elegant pillared archways that allow one room to flow to the next. Outside there is a beautiful jasmine scented garden surrounded by ancient walls, part of which is private and just for you. Santa Croce is a central neighbourhood that still retains an authentically Venetian feel. It is not swarmed by tourists, but the top sites are still easily reachable. Stroll fifteen minutes to the Rialto Bridge, or peruse the international masterworks housed in the Baroque marble palace of the Ca' Pesaro gallery. You are a few minutes’ walk from the Riva de Biasio vaporetto stop, which takes you down the Grand Canal. After a day of exploring the city, head for wine and cicchetti at an ancient Venetian tavern on the waterfront, and then come home and relax with a book in the serenity of your garden, as the sun sets over the floating... city.

About Rialto
Rialto is right in the middle of Venice’s other main districts – it doesn't really get more central than this. It’s a favourite with tourists, particularly as its less hectic than San Marco (this is all relative though – everywhere in Venice is packed). It’s intersected by many small intertwining canals, which make for good views and plenty of opportunity for gondola rides, if that's your cup of tea. Perhaps...

The 'scuolas' of Venice were cultural associations, and San Rocco was once the richest one. The opulent insides include frescoes by Tintoretto and more.

Eat fish at Acqua e Mais
Alvise, the owner, had the brilliant idea of offering "scraps" overflowing with fried squid, mixed fry, octopus salad, rice with shrimp. The rest is history.

Eat traditional at Osteria la Zucca
Vegetarian food in Venice isn't usually much to write home about, but this place is the best of the bunch (even its name means pumpkin).

Dinosaurs at the Museo di Storia Naturale
While this is a fairly standard natural history museum, it's a great for children, and the dinosaur fossils are undeniably impressive.

Admire the collection of Ca' Pesaro
This modern art gallery houses 10 rooms and multiple works by Rodin, Kandinskji and De Chirico, to name but a few.

Enjoy traditional cicchetti and wine at Cantina Do Spade
A cosy, wood-panelled bar serving delicious light bites, pastas and a variety of wines by the glass. Friendly staff and a lively atmosphere make it a great spot for tourists and locals alike.
