As soon as you clap your eyes on the magnificent murals and shared rooftop terrace of this apartment building, you know it will be one to remember. Set in central Funchal and just a short walk from the seafront, this former embroidery factory has been expertly reimagined into six independent apartments. While some historic details remain (we love the curiosity-filled display cases), everywhere else has been given a definite contemporary twist. Slide back the glass doors of the main bedroom, then head onto the charming private veranda to savour morning coffees and pastéis de nata in the sun. Or, if you fancy a sea view over breakfast, head up to the panoramic communal rooftop terrace with an outdoor kitchen to whip up brunch and mimosas. When it's time to soak up the city's buzz, step out from this home's decorative façade, and in just a few steps, you'll be right in the heart of Funchal's historical centre, Zona Velha. Brimming with shops, museums, and home to the Sé Cathedral of Funchal, it's an afternoon well spent. Then swing by the famous Farmers' Market, Mercado dos Lavradores to pick up some local delicacies to savour with Poncho sundowners on the rooftop terrace... back home. As the sun dips over the city, there's no finer place to toast the day's end.
