10 of the Best Homes in Plum Guide's Collection
Take a look at this list of A* homes and discover the cream of an exceptional crop
~
Here at Plum Guide, our mission is to build the definitive collection of the world's best vacation homes. No surprises, then, that the long-list did exactly what it said on the tin when it came to choosing the best homes in our collection. But somehow we managed to compile 10 of our favourites here, from the rolling hills of the Cotswolds to the dazzling deserts of Joshua Tree and beyond. Oh, and once you're done, why not head over Plum Guide and explore our full collection? Because there's plenty more where these came from...
The Early Risers, Devon
If Bruce Wayne had a house in Devon, we’re pretty certain it would look just like The Early Risers. The epitome of sleek, cool, and sophisticated, it's an inevitable start to this stellar list of homes. Where to start with what we love about it? Well, there’s the gravity-defying fireplace, contemporary furnishings and finishes wherever you look, a suitably stocked bar and, our favourite of all, a glass wall looking out to the striking sea. Fix yourself a stiff drink (or get Alfred to) and gaze out across the Woolacombe shoreline after a day of exploring your surroundings. The definition of bliss? Without doubt.
Thyme & Sage, the Cotswolds
From first glance, you know you're in for a memorable stay at the charming Thyme & Sage. Built in a quintessential Cotswolds style, this gorgeous rose-covered stone house has been owned and treasured by host Gilly and her family since 1920. With 6 bedrooms, it's the perfect size for a family or a group of your nearest and dearest. Its location can't be beaten either. It's just a short drive from Cheltenham should you fancy popping into the old spa town or shopping along the historic streets. But with a swimming pool, tennis court, and even a zip wire in the garden, you might fancy staying at home instead...
The Mirrored House, Joshua Tree
In a secluded and unspoiled part of Joshua Tree, you'll find a breathtaking home made entirely out of reflective material, allowing the surrounding desert to admire its own beauty. Check out the rock formations and cacti reflected in the mirror façade of this unique home, which harmonises with its environment so well that you’ll bump into it if you’re not careful. Once inside (i.e. once you manage to find the door to get in), you'll find a 100-foot swimming pool, not to mention sleek furniture and features that'll have you wishing you could stay there forever.
The Bronze Knight, the Cotswolds
You might not believe it (we struggled to at first) but The Bronze Knight was once a barn. You'll be thrilled to know the animals have long gone, and in their place you'll find character, charm and a dash of luxury too. We particularly love the dining room, featuring a long table flanked by bi-fold doors that open out onto a quaint courtyard - perfect for breakfasts and brunches whilst soaking up the sun. While away the hours by taking a dip in the private pool, or by listening to the jukebox. Or both at the same time, you're on holiday after all...
Desert Wave, Coachella Valley
Looking for the perfect desert hideaway for two? Look no further than Desert Wave. A truly unique feat of mid-century modern architecture from the outside, and expertly designed within, you'll leave full of interior inspiration (and envy). The home's wave-like roof is the real showstopper though, but no, it doesn't double up as a slide. We learned that the hard way...
A Faithful Friend, The Hamptons
A Faithful Friend is almost 100 years old, so it’s had plenty of time to garner its unique character and charm. First of all, the garden will stop you in your tracks...especially when the flowers are in full bloom. Then, (if and) when you've finished admiring the grounds, step inside and you'll be met with an elegant but homely atmosphere from one room to the next.
Stargazer, Lake Tahoe
Floor-to-ceiling windows encompass this bright and spacious home, which is beautifully decorated and looks out onto the Agate Bay of northern Lake Tahoe. Enjoy the soothing sight of snowy peaks across the water or watch an unforgettable sunset before those stars take their bow. With a hot tub on the terrace for those who want to relax and a pool table to keep the others entertained, you won’t ever have to leave.
Sense & Sensibility, Suffolk
Immerse yourself in Georgian romanticism at this historic Suffolk stately home, which is surrounded by vast manicured grounds for you to ‘take a turn around the garden’. There’s an opulent library should you wish to do your Regency-era research and find time to act out parts of the novel the house is named after. There’s even a giant pool for you to recreate your very own Mr. Darcy moment. (Ok yes, that’s a different Jane Austen book, but still...)
A Piece of Italy, Colorado
Ever thought you'd find a place that combined the ruggedness of the Rockies with the elegance of Italy? Well, neither did we until we came across this grand home. ‘A Piece of Italy’ offers exactly what it says on the tin, bringing a slice of ‘la dolce vita’ to the States. The town itself is modelled after Alpine villages in Switzerland and Germany, so a trip there feels very much like a European adventure. The area provides some of the best skiing opportunities in not just America, but the world too so be prepared to hit the slopes. Oh, and it’s famed for its lively après-ski experience, so be prepared to hit the bars afterwards too.
Desert Skies, Yucca Valley
This home really is desert solitude at its best, where the only neighbours you'll see are the silent cacti keeping watch. Whether it's the views from this peaceful home or the amazing design aesthetic within it, we simply can't get enough. Sunbathe on the comfy outdoor beds and cool down in the saltwater pool, or lounge around inside as you admire the luxurious interiors and artworks and how they go so well with the desert topography.
