If this beautiful villa were any closer to the crystal-clear waters of the ocean, it would be floating. It's just a few steps through the pretty gardens down to the soft sands. This place is all about taking it easy and that's exactly what you'll be doing as you pad out to the deck each morning for a swim in the private pool, find yourself a sun lounger and read until your cook calls you for lunch. Inside, the villa has a traditional West Indian coastal home feel, with white and pale grey tones and a subtle nautical theme. All of the bedrooms are of a good size and each has its own en-suite – two even open straight to the pool deck. Indoor-outdoor living is all the easier thanks to the large covered terrace at the rear, where your group can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and a few games of pool. The toughest choice you're likely to make all day is whether to eat on the terrace or under the pergola in the garden – it's the best spot for taking in those ocean views.

A Caribbean feel is tastefully created in each room with natural materials and beach-theme accents. Step out of the ground floor bedroom, onto the patio and you can sit with your morning cuppa and your holiday read as the sun warms your skin. For a little respite from the heat, head through the gardens to the communal pool where the cool waters will be a welcome relief. A set of steps lead from the back garden to the soft sand of Gibbes Beach, and sea views can be seen from bedroom balconies and terraces. Float in the lagoon pool to the sound of waves and dine under the gazebo as white yachts cut across the horizon before you. The house itself is designed, plantation-style, by architect Larry Warren and makes the most of Barbados’ balmy climate. The living and dining room has a wall of arched doorways, opening up to an ocean view wrap-around terrace furnished with rocking chairs, coffee tables and sun loungers. The classy kitchen is a chef’s dream with its huge range-style cooker, wall-sized fridge and walk-in pantry, though a private chef is available to cook all your meals if you wish. Sunsets here are legendary, and with a dedicated bar between the kitchen and living room, there’s no better place for a sundowner.

This pretty villa is found in the Royal Westmoreland Golf Resort in Barbados. If you saw the word 'golf' and instantly recoiled, don't fret — there's plenty to do here besides perfecting your swing. For a start, a stay here gives you access to an exclusive beach club on Mullins Bay, just five minutes from the front door, as well as tennis courts, spa treatments and restaurants. If your eyes lit up at the mention of 'golf', you'll be happy to hear that there's a five-star course with views of the Caribbean Sea from every green. Back at home, your back garden has its very own plunge pool that's perfect for those sizzling hot Bajan afternoons, plus a barbecue for grilling up a seafood feast come evening time and an alfresco dining area from which to enjoy it.

As you travel along the winding driveway, through an enchanting mahogany grove to this luxury home in the renowned centuries-old 23-acre Porters Great House Estate, you'll be congratulating yourself on discovering this gem. Wander down hidden paths past the sparkling pool and old sugar works through stunning tropical gardens. It's hard to choose, but we think one of our favourite spots is by the peaceful lily pond. Once the old carriage house, the villa is cosy yet chic with coral stone walls, marble floors, and metalwork chandeliers. We particularly adore the dining room with its high ceiling, intricate woodwork design and wall of wooden shutters – it's the perfect place to entertain family and friends. If you can bear to leave this Barbadian paradise with its green monkeys and gorgeous birds roaming the grounds, then the gorgeous white sands and turquoise waters of Colony Club Beach are just over a five-minute stroll away.

Steeped in 1950s charm, this coral stone mansion was once the home of a United States Ambassador. Now – seventy years later – it’s ready to take you on the holiday of a lifetime, boasting a wealth of high-end amenities that’ll make your stay in Barbados one to remember. 

Step into the main house, where you’ll be greeted by an elegant living space complete with 14 feet ceilings and mosaic floors reminiscent of a classical Italian villa.  This is the perfect place to be if you want to escape the heat, but if you’d rather be out and about, there’s 1.5 acres of lush gardens outside just waiting to be explored. Right down on the sands of popular Mullins Beach, this Bajan beauty is just a few feet from the sea. A traditional beach house with two glorious sun decks, this place has been designed to focus on the view. Step out of your cool, comfortable living room and enjoy your breakfast on the covered dining terrace, with the waves lapping at the shore just beneath. There's no pool here, but that's because you really couldn't get any closer to the water – head off for daily swims in the clear blue of the Caribbean and dry off in the sun on one of your loungers. The interior is modern and minimal, with a weathered, vintage look to the 'pickled' wood ceilings. There's a contemporary kitchen for you to rustle up snacks and drinks but thanks to your housekeeper/cook you won't have to worry too much about cooking – you'll have two delicious meals per day provided. The second bedroom is full of island charm, with beamed ceilings, shutters and French doors opening to the lower deck, while the stunning master bedroom upstairs has vaulted ceilings, a superb en-suite and its own private elevated sun deck with panoramic sea views. It's easy to forget you’re on an island known for its activity and nightlife with all this natural beauty on your doorstep, but there are all sorts of water sports to get involved with from the beach, and you can walk to a number of beach bars and restaurants.

Situated directly on the beach, this villa in Reeds Bay is a dream come true. You couldn't ask for a better location – not only is the ocean just steps away but there are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance when you fancy a night on the town. Holetown and Speightstown are also less than a ten-minute drive, so you're spoilt for choice. That said, it'll be hard to tear yourself away from your private oasis. Spend your days sunbathing in the beachfront garden, swimming in the clear blue ocean, cooling off in the plunge pool or unwinding on the shady terrace or balconies with a cocktail and a good book. Inside, it's bright and breezy. Even when you're lounging on the cushy sofas, that Caribbean Sea view is there to admire. Though some may find the 'under the sea'-inspired design a little too on-the-nose, we think it's a whimsical way to embrace the stunning oceanfront location. And the best part? You don't even have to worry about cooking, as a home chef will prepare three meals a day for you. Now that's a holiday.
