Elsewhere, the imposing Château de Petite Somme is under a ten-minute walk away. This 13th-century castle is home to the only purely vegetarian restaurant in the region and an artisanal bakery – perfect for that freshly baked morning loaf. For more medieval charm, the nearby town of Durbuy is the gateway to kayaking, canoeing and rafting adventures down the River Ourthe.

Here, you can still find Durbay – picturesque and often referred to as the smallest city in Europe – only minutes away. 

When you’re not out sunbathing poolside or making a splash in the communal pool, you’ll likely find yourself laying back on the sofa with your nose in a good book. Get up every now and again to saunter over to the compact, but sleek, kitchen where you can pop another pod into the coffee machine and brew up fresh cuppa. Nurse it as you sit in the light of the sliding door – which should ideally be open to let all of that fresh, countryside air in. 

Sit around the kitchen island for a light lunch, but when you’re really not in the mood to cook, go out exploring the narrow streets of Durbay until you find a restaurant or cafe that takes your fancy. Visit the Bomal Market on Sundays – only around ten minutes away – and try the cycling trails by walking five minutes to Funtrail Durbay.

This twelfth-century chateau in the Belgian countryside is quite simply enormous. Not only does it sit within ten hectares of pretty private parkland, but it can also accommodate a whopping thirty-five guests across the building and its two wings.

With all of this size to play around with, the host has ensured that every guest will find something that will appeal to them. The parquet flooring, original panelling, parquet flooring and open fireplaces mean that the living rooms are wonderful spots to do nothing more but relax, while the garden, courtyards and dining terrace also offer somewhere equally pleasant to sit and enjoy the sunshine.

In addition to this, you'll find a recently built Finnish sauna in the home, plus a games room complete with a bar and billiards tables. If that gets you in the sporting mood, there's an all-weather tennis court on the grounds, as well as a private lake, which you can use for fishing, canoeing or even swimming.

The closest town is Ciney, which takes about five minutes to reach in the car and has a handful of shops and restaurants. A little further afield, there's everything from caves, Roman ruins and outdoor activities to keep you occupied.

Gather your loved ones at this solid dining table and plan a day out mountain biking or horse-riding around the Ourthe. Or, visit La Ferme au Chêne in Durbuy where they are still brewing beer using medieval methods. 

Picturesque in every season, we think you'll love seeing the famous Christmas market in mid-December. Then, you can snuggle up in your cosy home and watch a storybook snowfall from these large windows.

Deep in the Woods

A six-minute drive from the medieval town of Durbuy, where cobbled streets and traditional stone houses have stood the test of time, this home offers slightly more modern luxuries. You'll be welcomed by lush greenery and forests surrounding the red brickwork of this fantastic villa (as long as you don’t get lost on your visit to The Labyrinth of Barvaux-sur-Ourthe, nine minutes away).

Rustic interiors invite you into the lounge, where chunky beams and exposed stonework create a charming, old-world vibe. In contrast to the modern corner sofa, the wood-burning fireplace looks wonderfully vintage, as well as being a perfect spot to cosy up with a glass of pinot noir. And from here, you can see through huge glass doors to your private garden.

On sunny afternoons, grill some fresh, local fare on the barbecue and serve up on the patio  – you might have to call the kids a few times for dinner if they’re busy in the playground. For an after-dinner treat for all, there’s a hidden surprise in the outhouse. Beneath a striking wooden, apex ceiling, your heated pool awaits. Splash around with a cocktail by the poolside, then head into the sauna after the little ones have retired to the bunk beds.

With enough space to sleep up to fourteen guests, this place is nice and roomy – in fact, you'll have exactly 3767 sq. ft. to call your own. The large garden area presents the perfect place to soak up the rays on sunnier days, while the spacious terrace is ideal for indulging in a spot of al fresco dining. For us, it would have to be Belgian waffles smothered in rich, silky chocolate – if you can't do it when you're in Bruges, then when can you?!

An invigorating way to start the day, be sure to retreat to the sauna afterwards for some well–deserved rest and relaxation.
Decor wise, everything is soft and neutral. Creams and earthy greens illuminate the walls, meanwhile natural wooden floors effortlessly warm the place up. There are rattan furnishings dotted from room to room, and a large fireplace in the living area, making everything extra cosy. In the evening, gather here with family and friends for a quick nightcap before snuggling up in bed.
If you're keen to get out and about on foot, the town centre is just 300m away, and a selection of restaurants and supermarkets are just 400m away. So, whether you're grabbing groceries or you want to sample some authentic Belgian cuisine, this place has got you covered.

The Little Round Window

A five-minute drive from medieval Durbuy – which bills itself as the world’s smallest city – this chalet-style house offers woodland living in the lush surroundings of Ardennes. While you might pop into town to pick up Belgian beers, pâté, and the region’s famous smoked ham, there’s plenty going on at home to make you want to stay put.

In some ways, this house feels more like a treehouse than anything. Of course there’s plenty of native green foliage outside around the grounds, as well as the hill leading up to the front, but it’s the interiors that really give off this vibe. In this rural cabin, it’s all about wood, wood, and more wood.

From the floors to the ceiling, the walls to the tables, this main feature is in perfect harmony with the natural world. The apex ceiling makes the rustic living space feel large and lofty, with more brightness coming in from the adjoining terrace. This shaded spot is perfect for sipping a chilled Saison or savouring freshly barbecued produce. It’s also ideal for peering down to your private boules court below and heckling your friends mid-game, or stargazing into clear night skies.

Sitting in the middle of the countryside in the Gouvy region of Belgium, this is one of those homes that is appealing to visit whatever the season.

Arrive during the warmer months and you'll be able to make full use of the large garden complete with a barbecue, lots of seating and a hot tub. If you're travelling here during the colder part of the year, however, you'll be sure to appreciate the wood stove in the living room, as well as tables for billiards and air hockey that will keep troops entertained during rainy afternoons.

Aside from these amenities, we're big fans of the modern conservatory with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the garden, as well as the contemporary styled kitchen with its copper-coloured surfaces and sleek finishes.

The local area is known for its walking and cycling routes, and there are a handful of pretty towns in the region, including Vielsalm just under fifteen minutes' drive. If you have a day going spare, the historic city of Liège is a fifty-minute drive and has a fascinating range of architecture.
