You'll feel right at home in this rustic hideaway, with the open-hearth fireplace, squishy sofas and wooden panelling creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

Whether it's through the double-height windows or out from the private balcony, the Swiss mountains rise in all their glory. You can look forward to cheese-filled dinners, using the home's raclette grill and fondue set, and curling up by the towering feature fireplace – the vistas of the peaks will backdrop everything you do. Bedrooms are simple and on the bottom floor, ensuring a good night's sleep before taking the ski bus (600m from the home) or setting off on a hike. There's only one deadline to adventures, and that's being back at the balcony for sunset over the snow-capped peaks.

In fact, you’ll be centrally placed for everything during your stay, with the resort offering all the everyday things you’ll need, like supermarkets and restaurants as well as an energetic après-ski scene so you can keep riding the slope of adrenaline-filled fun into the evening. But sometimes you just want to cast off your ski goggles and relax, and that’s ok too. What this home provides in spades is comfort, cosiness and a place to chill out. Coming in shivering from a day on the slopes? You’ll warm through by the fire in no time. And when you're hankering for a view, you could take a sumptuous faux fur blanket out onto the balcony  – imagine clutching a steaming hot chocolate while you watch the light play on the Matterhorn Glacier. When it comes to a stay on the slopes, you can’t get much more charming or convenient than this chic chalet-style home. This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. The apartment itself, part of an aparthotel, offers a serene and comfortable place to retreat to after a day of activities, with mountain views from the living room and private balcony. For extra relaxation make use of the building's sauna, while the storage room is great for keeping your bikes and skis secure.

The slopes are only 100m away – the ski lift is a kilometre away – meaning competent skiers can strap up and just speed off on a day's adventure. Big baths await to soak tired muscles in bedrooms and bathrooms, our favourite being the stretched tub in the master suite – we're pretty sure there's room for two. If you're visiting in summer, a spacious garden and terrace furniture is perfect for catching the sunset, and if you need a break from all that cheese, you can fire up the barbecue.

Surprise Me

Just a stone’s throw from the centre of Zermatt, this modern split-level apartment has plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes minutes from your doorstep. And better still, you’re less than a kilometre to ski lifts and numerous hiking trails. But the real attraction is the view; it’s not every day you get to sip your morning coffee with the Matterhorn as your backdrop. Inside the home, wood-beam ceilings and a warming fire make for a cosy and comfortable stay, while floor-to-ceiling windows, striking cow-hide sofas and a full-bodied red kitchen add a vibrant, modern twist. After a long day on the slopes, sit out on the balcony with a hot cocoa and watch the golden hour illuminate the jagged peaks. Indulge your weary muscles in the hydro massage bath, or don your dressing gown and head down to the shared sauna and Jacuzzi.

While this chalet in Rairettes was built in 2013, its wooden walls, arched ceilings and slate roof make it feel quintessentially old-school Swiss. There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. When you're done, head back to the plush pad for evening soaks in the deep bathtub or a session in the private sauna.

Clouds Reach

Those who love the great outdoors will have similar feelings about this apartment in the Silvaplana region of Switzerland. It's about five minutes' walk from a ski lift, half that time to walking routes through a forest and just over half an hour in the car to a windsurfing school on the edge of Lake Silvaplana. However you choose to spend your time here, the home itself will have you well rested ahead of the following day's excursions. The wooden beams and vaulted ceilings feel quintessentially Swiss, as does the open-hearth fireplace in the living room for warming up cold fingers. In the same space, there's a door leading to a balcony, which, should the weather be on your side, is a lovely spot for breakfast, thanks in no small part to the spectacular mountain view.

Eternal Recurrence

If it’s the mountain views that attracted you to Leukerbad, then we’ve some good news for you: this apartment serves up stunning vistas over the peaks and hills from its open-plan living area and large private balcony. The space is light and modern, with a comfy leather seating area where you’ll curl up around the open-hearth fireplace and watch a film on the flat-screen TV. In the mornings, you’ll tuck into a light meal at the breakfast bar in the kitchen, while dinners with the family are enjoyed around the eight-seater dining table. Catch the ski bus to one of the eighteen pistes for a day on the slopes and relax at the chalet’s sauna, whirlpool jacuzzi and steam room when you get back. Renovated in 2014, this traditional chalet has been filled with so many rustic but luxury touches, you might be distracted from the business of hitting the slopes of nearby Nendaz. We suggest exploring, however, as on your return a deep standalone bath and the home's private sauna are there to take away any aches and pains. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, dining tables have been positioned to soak up the Alpine views, through double-height glass windows indoors or on the home's long balcony outdoors. There's room for the whole party to sit and feast on raclette, fondue and barbecued delights. Bedrooms are snug and Swiss, with their sloping beamed ceilings and wooden walls – though the addition of skylights and French doors flood the space with sunshine. For cooler days, there's plenty of room in the living area – light the Scandinavian wood-burner and watch the sun set over the mountains.
