Experience Denmark's capital like a true Copenhagener at this ultra-slick townhouse perched beside the city's South Harbour. Quietly removed from the inner-city hustle in a new waterfront development, you'll need to hop on the harbour ferry or buses when heading downtown. Or keep things local – there's a lovely café, playground and shops to pick up essentials within walking distance. At full occupancy, the last guest will have to make do with a sofa bed in the TV snug. But we're happy to let that slide for a home with such strong design aesthetics and private terraces to boot.

With plenty of the minimalist style Scandinavia is famous for, this ground-floor apartment in Copenhagen opens up the city to you. Despite being the owners' main home, the space is uncluttered – you won't feel like you're intruding here. We love the charming kids' room, while the terrace is perfect for your morning coffee. You're close to a canal if you fancy a stroll, and the relaxed neighbourhood is brimming with cafes and shops. When you want to hit the centre, you'll find yourself well-connected.

As expected for an 18th-century Copenhagen home, the layout of this large and oh-so-stylish studio is a little kooky. One bedroom with a handy desk nook is tucked into the eaves on a mezzanine, so it's not the most private of spaces. The living area, which houses a sofa bed for two guests, forms part of the main bedroom. And while the balcony is a bonus, it's pocket-sized. But you can't quibble with the location. Set slap bang in the middle of Indre By, you're within walking distance of all the city's must-sees. Get off to a flying start at the shopping mecca of Strøget – it's right outside your door. Just note that this is a central, noisy area – light sleepers may want to pack earplugs.

This large studio-style apartment has a great address in Dronningegården, right behind Kongens Have (The King's Garden). You’ll also find nearby the city’s largest square Kongens Nytorv, home to the Royal Theatre. Housed in a 1950s building, this apartment has a small bedroom area with a king-size bed tucked away behind a half wall. Two more guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living area at full capacity. We should also mention there’s free access to the local gym if you want to keep up your fitness regime while away. This place is ideal for friends or family looking for an excellent location.

Just a five-minute walk from this apartment will take you to the City Hall Square and the central station. It's the same walking distance to Tivoli Gardens, a magical theme park with a century-old wooden roller coaster, gardens and restaurants. As with the rides at Tivoli, this apartment has some ups and downs – let's start with the good points. There's a shared garden perfect for beers in the summer, and the apartment itself is spacious. To enter the second bedroom, though, you will need to go through the third bedroom. This room doesn't have any windows but borrows light via French doors into the adjacent room, so privacy is also an issue – it’s probably fine for the kids, we would say.

Situated just one street from The Lakes, this penthouse apartment is perfectly positioned for waterfront strolls, coffees and drinks. This modern Scandi-style apartment is ideal for groups wanting to maximise their time both out and in, with a central location and a contemporary sociable space. If you’re visiting as a group of eight, two guests will sleep on the living area sofa bed, so you might need to call it early some nights. But then again, with plenty of bars and concert venues nearby, we’re sure you'll spend your evenings out experiencing the Copenhagen culture.

Located on Strøget, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to local restaurants, cafes and shops. It also provides easy access to iconic sights and there are great public transport links. The kitchen isn't the biggest and there is some adult-themed artwork, but otherwise, it's a cosy option in the heart of the city.

This Copenhagen bolthole may be pocket-sized, but it would work well for two friends or colleagues looking for a central base to lay their heads. There's little space for socialising, with no living room to speak of. But each bedroom has a cushy chair and the dining banquette in the compact kitchen is a cosy spot for breakfast, and the bakery nearby will keep the pastries flowing. Outside, Nyhavn's buzzy cafes and restaurants are just around the corner. Kongens Nytorv Metro Station is also within easy reach, ready for you to blaze a trail across the city.

This city-centre apartment is seriously chic – we absolutely loved its minimalist Scandi vibes. The communal area is open and bright, offering plenty of space for all six guests to hang out together. There are thoughtful touches like vintage illustrated posters hanging on the wall above comfortable furniture from New Scandinavian Design maestros, Bolia. The glass-walled bedrooms are definitely a novel touch and create a strong impact. They certainly won't be to everyone's taste, but all have velvet curtains to pull across for some privacy when needed. With views onto Copenhagen's main shopping street, Strøget, you couldn't be better placed to hit the luxury boutiques and independent shops when the mood takes you. Plus, you're not far from the colourful waterside bars and restaurants of Nyhavn or the high culture of the Royal Danish Theatre – a little over a five-minute walk away.

Size and style come in equal measure at this Copenhagen apartment. It's perched along the famous shopping mile, and most of the must-see sights are just a stroll away. A great option for a multi-generational family stay, each bedroom is as light-filled as the next, and the living spaces are palatial by inner-city standards. It's worth noting there's only one bathroom here, and four guests will be sharing the last bedroom – fine for family sharing, but it won't suit everyone. Expect street noise from time to time, too – but that's all part and parcel of central Copenhagen living.

There’s no place like home… Until you’ve stayed in Master of Light that is. Casual luxury at its finest, it’s Copenhagen at its best. The location is extraordinary – you’re right besides Nyhavn, the city’s most famous postcard motif. And we can’t get over the design. Alexander clearly has a passion for Danish design, with works by Bang & Olufsen and Hans J. Wegner adorning every corner. There’s also a fantastic rooftop terrace with a nine-person hot tub, sun beds and a lounge arrangement, plus fantastic views of Copenhagen's historic buildings.

Locations really don’t get much better than this. It's rare to find a property this close by to the picture-perfect Nyhavn district, with its brightly coloured gabled townhouses. Find a sunny spot outside at a quayside café or hop on a boat for one of the many canal tours that start here. As the evening draws in, take a pre-dinner stroll along the waterfront, then duck into one of the many restaurants and bars that line the canal.  You could call in on the Queen too, she lives just around the corner. And when it’s finally time to retreat inside, you’ll find a contemporary place that invites you to be social. The communal area is the heart of the home, offering plenty of space for your tribe to hang out, cook, and eat. The industrial-style windows flood natural light through the apartment by day, while the plush velvet curtains allow privacy at night when it’s time for some shut-eye.

Vesterbro is also lovely, especially if you’re looking to sample some new restaurants or coffee shops – or want to be in walking distance to Tivoli and Rådhuspladsen. It’s not the most characterful home on our books, but we like that it feels welcoming and bright. The kitchen is definitely the highlight – it’s large, modern, and well-equipped for cooking.

The open-plan living area is the ideal hangout spot for your holiday downtown. Finished with bright furnishings and a touch of boho charm, the spacious room is lit up with not one, not two, but six windows. After preparing meals in the snazzy kitchen, you have a choice of places to dine – at the breakfast bar, the eight-person dining table, or outside in the sun (that's our pick, weather permitting). 

When it's time to explore the city, you won't have to travel far to take in Copenhagen's best sites. The cobbled Kongens Nytorv square is barely a five-minute walk away, and from here Nyhavn's colourful waterfront is another short hop. Enjoy lunch with a waterfront view, then meander through the characterful streets towards Christianshavn, a unique network of small islands. A bohemian atmosphere meets Japanese zen in this striking home. We particularly love all the original features including the wooden beams, exposed brick walls (and even the creaky floors), which mix beautifully with the hosts’ collection of books and vintage furniture. Since the apartment was renovated in 2013, it has been featured in several lifestyle magazines for its charming design aesthetic. Spread across three floors, unique quirks include the rather rustic ladders that take you up to the second and third floors. Curl up in a cosy corner with a book in hand and live the scene of what seems like it could be a fictional dream. Alongside world literature, the host also supplies guests with access to gym equipment, should you wish to keep up with your fitness routine while visiting Copenhagen. Around the apartment, the immediate area feels very local – the Christianshavn canals are just two minutes away, and so are plenty of restaurants. All in all, it's safe to say that this home is perfectly out of the ordinary.

This penthouse apartment is located right on Strøget, the main pedestrian street in Copenhagen, making it ideal for visitors who want to explore the city on foot. Climb up to the top of the building and once you arrive, and you'll find a wonderfully light and welcoming space that's full of Scandi-style and designer furniture. The lovely kitchen and living space are great for socialising over some smørrebrødands and a glass of wine, and the gorgeous wooden floors and high windows add an extra level of charm. However, our favourite part of this home is the romantic little nook in the bay window where you can look out over the city's spires and rooftops. Back on ground level, you can stroll to Tivoli Gardens, the famous 19th Century amusement park, in less than ten minutes, while the iconic Nyhavn waterfront is a fifteen-minute walk away. 

The Olive Tree Loft

Sitting right along the banks of Bryggen Syd, this apartment provides a sleek space for families and groups visiting Copenhagen. Now, we think the best way to explore the city is on foot or by bike, though there’s free street parking nearby too. From here, you can swim off Bådelaug Havnestad, enjoy drinks in Christianshavn or soak up some culture in Indre By. The interiors are modern with plenty of light thanks to the glass sliding doors, and we love how the sofa converts to a bed should you be visiting as a larger group. Just keep in mind that this is in the living area, so it lacks some privacy. 


Bryggen Beauty

A whirlwind of green hues, this snug home brings an instant smile to our faces. It's warm and comfortable, with a large dining table perfect for sharing family meals and a cosy sitting area where you can kick back and relax with a glass of wine and Netflix. A small collection of books and board games only add to the homey feel, as do the large windows which flood the lounge with natural light. One of the bedrooms is rather tiny and the bathroom isn't the biggest we've seen, but the brilliant location more than makes up for it. We love this area's historic charm and quiet streets, yet buzzing restaurants, cafes and shops are all a short stroll away. You're also within walking distance to many of Copenhagen's most beloved sights – Amalienborg Palace, Nyhavn, The Little Mermaid, Frederik's Church, you name it, chances are you can get to it easily. Best of all? The Danish queen lives just down the road, so if it's good enough for royalty, it's good enough for us.

Sage Advice

If you're looking for amusement on your city break, how about this home? It's just around the corner from Tivoli Gardens, a theme park with a century-old wooden roller coaster. If you're not after an adrenaline rush, gardens and fantastic restaurants are also nearby. Like the park rides, this apartment has many highs and a few lows. The lift takes you right to the top floor, and we love the characteristic beams. At full capacity, though, there's only one bathroom between eight people – you’d better work out a rota for the mornings.

Heritage Haven

A flat roomy enough for ten people right in the city centre is pretty much unheard of, so imagine our surprise when we found this gem. With five stylish bedrooms and an amply-sized living area meant for socialising, there's enough space here for a big group to spread out and get comfortable. The kitchen isn't massive – we'd only recommend it for cooking breakfast and other light meals – but we liked the vanity area outside the bathrooms, where you can prep hair and makeup without hogging the loo. There are other touches, too – USB plugs by all the beds, an Apple TV in the living space for at-home movie nights and no single-use plastic. This building has the highest eco-certification (A15) and it's run on renewable energy, so it's as good for the environment as it is stylish. Best of all is the location – Strøget is just around the corner, with restaurants, shops, cafes and bars all right on your doorstep. You're only two minutes away from Kongens Have and Rosenborg Castle as well, perfect for strolls in the sun.

Yet, the city centre can be reached in six minutes via Copenhagen's speedy metro system. Back at this home, there's a gym to keep up your fitness regime, or relax on the king-sized bed. While the bedroom is separate, this apartment is more like a studio as there's no sofa or living room here. The kitchen area is also quite compact, but it has an oven and hob. This place is the ideal base for a couple or solo traveller or those on business.

Sunlit Haven

You're right in the thick of things at this smart downtown apartment, perched along Copenhagen's shopping mecca of Strøget. The metro is just 100 metres from your door, though we doubt you'll need it with buzzy Nyhavn Harbour and countless happening restaurants and cosy cafes within walking distance. It's worth noting if four of you share, the last two guests will have to make do with the sofa bed in the living space. You'll also need to prepare for some street noise from time to time. But we'll take that for a home with such an unbeatable location.

Strøget Delight

With its enviable location on the beach trail to Amager Strandpark, you can breathe in the sea air in no time here. You’ll also find the Øresund metro station is five minutes away, allowing easy access to the city centre or airport in three stops. Of course, with such convenience, there’s the potential for some street noise – particularly given there’s a popular cafe on your doorstep. That said, given the apartment has a basic kitchenette, this will prove handy. An ideal base for four people, just be prepared for two guests to sleep on the sofa bed. 

Beach Trail Retreat

We love this studio apartment's location – it's steps away from Amager Strand. So, if you like to swim in the sea, kite surf or go for long walks on the beach, this is the place for you. The National Aquarium of Denmark is also just minutes away. The proximity to the airport and a metro station that takes you into the city centre in six minutes makes it ideal for tourists and business travellers alike. Back at this home's development, there's a shared gym, or relax on the king-sized bed in the apartment (there's no sofa or living room here). Yes, the kitchen is quite compact, but it does have an oven and hob, so you can still cook some Danish delicacies.

She also offers an extensive fashion and art book collection for guests to choose from, plus there's a lovely private balcony for a spot of afternoon reading. Enjoy meals in the quirky dining area, with chic lighting, Eames-influenced chairs and brickwork wallpaper, that creates an industrial-styled space. Splashes of colour are painted on the home's blank canvas of wooden floors and whitewashed walls to make for a modern and artsy apartment that really packs a punch. In true Copenhagen fashion, the bathroom isn’t luxurious (it’s actually rather small), but we’re willing to look past that as the rest of the home is so charming. Outside, Frederiksberg is on the fancier side, so it’s especially ideal for someone who craves a bit of peace and quiet. You'll find upscale shops, boutiques and gourmet restaurants aplenty nearby, and you're within a five-minute walk from the Aksel Møllers Have metro station, connecting you to the rest of this ever-emerging city.
