Looking for a one-of-a-kind home with a heaven-sent view to boot? Well, they don’t come more character-filled or awe-inspiring than this. Perched high on the hills of Granada and just a short drive from the sandy shores of Lake Iznajar, this ancient church is lovingly reimagined into a unique retreat for relaxation and reflection. 

Step inside, and the house seems so frozen in time you can almost hear the old church bell ring. Ochre-washed walls and vaulted ceilings bring all the historic charm, and in the central nave now lies a vast double-height living space. This gorgeous Granada home, eclectically furnished and boasting panoramic views of the awesome Alhambra, is both the perfect place from which to explore all that this former Moorish stronghold sprawled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada has to offer by way of culture and cuisine, and a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Featuring a large natural light filled kitchen cum dining room and separate sitting room, you’ll easily be able to get the gang together for breakfast at the breakfast bar, meal times at the dining table and chill time on the sofas and easy chairs, or to arrange for some unadulterated me time. 

And yet, there’s something about the streets of Grenada and the energy they exude, lined as they are with bohemian cafes, bars and flirty flamenco clubs, that you’ll be longing to be a part of.  With so much within walking distance, culture vultures will want to begin with the Alhambra’s astonishing palace complex and landscaped gardens, before paying a visit the city’s cavernous cathedral and the Botanical Gardens of the University. As the sun sets, you’ll want to stop for tapas and a glass of sweet local wine or make a beeline for the Albayzín's 16th-century Palacio de los Olvidados where a night of intimate flamenco dance awaits. Watch quality performers stomping their stuff in the courtyard before wending your way home to bed.

With a prime position on the Andalusian coastline, it's actually possible to see the intense azure of the Mediterranean Sea if you step up to this home's rooftop terrace. What's most impressive about this address, however, is that this special view ranks pretty low on the list of perks.

That's to be expected when you have an outdoor space that has everything from a swimming pool, ping-pong table and a traditional stone barbecue for feeding fellow guests once tummies start to rumble. As well as that, there's an alfresco dining table on which you can enjoy the fruits of your labours, as well as a couple of peaceful balconies from which to gaze out at the rooftops of Almuñecar.

There's a lot to like inside as well. The design is fresh and contemporary, with a colour palette of soothing neutrals, no shortage of sleek surfaces and chic mid-century furnishings. You might be surprised to see the sauna given that is Spain rather than Scandinavia, but a quick sweat is an invigorating way to start the day.

And there are plenty of ways to fill the hours afterwards, too. San Cristóbal beach takes ten minutes to reach on foot, while the town's ancient castle and El Majuelo botanical gardens are another quarter of an hour on top of that.

Outside, you can experience pure relaxation while lounging by the pool – which can also be heated for an additional fee. There are also four terraces, a cinema room and a home gym here, ensuring plenty of entertainment options for the whole group. Your host can arrange child-friendly amenities and one of the rooms is adapted for guests with reduced mobility, making this a great option for a family gathering. Set in a small complex in Estepona, this modern apartment is just a short walk from the sandy shoreline of Playa de la Rada Beach. The town's restaurants and bars are also within walking distance, so you'll be well-placed for a stress-free stay. You'll find an indoor pool and a large outdoor pool lined with sun loungers, plus a gym, that invites you to spend a day or two relaxing at home. With impressive sea views and plenty of outside seating, the private terrace is a real standout too. All in all, it ticks a lot of the right boxes when it comes to a comfortable group getaway.

Only a five-minute stroll to the sea – so close, you can just glimpse it from the balcony – this apartment's breezy, open-plan feel makes it a great base for exploring Rincón de la Victoria. Although this flat has a very sleek, contemporary design, it still has plenty of soul – we particularly love the traditional patterned kitchen tiles, vivid pops of colour on the cushy throw pillows and the bright, light-filled living space. Our favourite spot is the sun-kissed balcony. When you fancy exploring, the village has multiple attractions nearby, including golf and shopping, as well as a long sandy beach ideal for sprawling underneath clear blue skies. Hire bikes and go adventuring along the lively seafront with its array of bars and restaurants or, for a bit more buzz, make the twenty-five-minute drive to Málaga – we think it's perfect for a day trip.

The home itself is simple but has everything you need for an extended stay – the terrace stood out to us in particular as a spot to get some privacy while still enjoying the sun. The large communal pools will be a real hit with the kids, and golf enthusiasts will be pleased to know there are two courses nearby. And if you want to hit the coast, Puerto Banús is just a short drive.
