Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

Malasaña is famous for being slightly outrageous, which is probably why Queen of the Castle is in it. A tour of this home reveals a glamorous hybrid design theme that balances modern baroque-inspired pieces with jungle and safari themes – dear lovers of minimalism, you might want to stay elsewhere. But if gold-coated flora and fauna with an occasional crown-cum-skull ensemble sound like heaven to you, then you'll find Queen of the Castle an absolute delight. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. And with most of the major attractions on your doorstep too, you'll have plenty to see and do.

The pared-back bedroom is a comfortable space you’ll have no trouble falling asleep in, and in the morning, the bathroom’s rainfall shower is sure to get your day off on the right.

Make your way to nearby Puerta del Sol, or head to Plaza Mayor – one of the city’s most famous squares lined with restaurants. It's genuinely cosy and comfortable and the original artwork on the walls gives it a distinctly homey vibe. Ideal for a younger crowd, it's a ten-minute walk to central Gran Via, and fifteen to the busy Puerta del Sol.

What a great location this apartment has in Madrid. The Royal Palace is just seven minutes on foot, while the Almudena Cathedral and the Plaza Mayor are within walking distance, too. As you'd expect from such a central location, you will hear some city noise while staying here. After all that exploring, you can sit in this home's shared courtyard and get your breath back. Inside, we love the living area's double-height ceilings and galleried landing, and there's a desk here if you need to catch up on work. We'd say the adjacent ground-floor bedroom isn't fully private, as it's a cubicle room with three-quarter-height walls – otherwise, this is a great home for couples, a family or business colleagues.

This chic and stylish apartment is perfect for a group of friends or a family. The muted decor and comfortable furniture mean that it’s a peaceful space to return to after busy days spent sightseeing, and there’s a private patio that’s a great spot for your morning coffee. The apartment is in the charming Jerónimos neighbourhood close to the Banco de España metro station, which makes seeing Madrid’s sights easy as can be. The Museo Nacional del Prado is within walking distance, too.

Sure, as a party of five, one person will sleep on the sofa bed in the living room, but it’s a small price to pay for this home’s location. Sightseeing comes easily here – you’re a mere kilometre from the iconic Prado Museum, and with Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor within easy reach, shopping and sampling some authentic Spanish cuisine is a must.

Molten Brass is neat and tidy. There isn’t a lot that jumps out at you, but that’s not necessarily a problem – the atmosphere inside is pretty calm. That stands in contrast to the atmosphere on the street below, which is pretty intense, but that’s because you’re in the heart of Malasaña, so there’s tonnes to do. As is common with any flat that is rented out all the time, there’s a lack of personality but the attention to detail, and generally pleasant, if simple, design help make the flat feel more homely.

This chic and attractive apartment has everything you might need for a comfortable city break. It’s located in Chueca, one of Madrid’s liveliest neighbourhoods, full of cafes, boutiques, and bars. Despite its central location, this is a peaceful home-from-home, ideal for unwinding after busy sightseeing days and evenings spent feasting on tapas. It’s bright and welcoming, flooded with light, and has been beautifully decorated in muted tones. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living room – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d recommend a maximum occupancy of two.

This chic apartment has two large shopping centres within a few hundred metres – this is a great base if you’re hoping to indulge in some retail therapy in Madrid. It’s in the heart of the city, with the Puerta del Sol just a few steps away. The apartment is modern and minimalist, with a tranquil vibe that means you can unwind when you’re not out seeing the sights. Two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room, which may not be the most comfortable set-up for longer stays. 

City Chic Retreat

Blue Torito is a chilled-out home located in one of the liveliest parts of Madrid. Even though it sports a gentle colour palette, it uses patterns and textures to give it a bit more spunk. From woven carpets to the textured headboards, it's apparent that the hosts like playing with details. The design is somewhat lacking a coherent theme, but Blue Torito is still a solid, bright, and comfortable choice, with access to a resident-only pool and terrace.

This studio apartment in the heart of Madrid may be on the smaller side, but it's packed with plenty of character. We love how the quirky interior nods to the area's history – particularly the colourful tile flooring and exposed stonework – yet it still feels trendy and cool. The snug kitchen has everything you need to rustle up a meal or two, but you'll want to spend your evenings sipping wine and tucking into a delicious Spanish feast at one of the excellent restaurants right on your doorstep. 

With Chueca metro station just a five-minute walk away, most of Madrid's must-see sights are within easy reach. Stroll down to the Plaza Mayor in twenty minutes or spend an afternoon wandering around the city's many markets and museums. When your feet are tired and legs weary from the day's adventures, head back and unwind on the comfortable sofa before nodding off in the sumptuous bed.

The upmarket districts of Salamanca, Chamberi and Justicia are all close, so you'll have plenty of fine restaurants, chic boutiques and art galleries to enjoy. With one of Madrid's main avenues on your doorstep, the slight downside is you will hear some street noise here, but it's easily fixed with some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. We have to say, we love the views over Plaza Villa de París from this home. The kitchen is well-equipped, so you can cook some homemade meals or let your host arrange a private chef to create some of your favourite tapas dishes.

The high ceilings, walls painted in angelic white and washed-out parquet flooring combine to amp up the brightness, while the en-suite bathrooms all feel super-sleek, too. It’s in a vibrant part of the city, close to restaurants and shops, and within walking distance of many of the key attractions – Plaza Mayor and the Prado Museum are less than twenty minutes away on foot. If you don’t feel like walking, hop on the metro at nearby Embajadores. The apartment is modern and attractive, equipped with everything needed for a city break.

The terrace is the first thing that grabs your attention at this fabulous home, housed in a historic building dating back to 1919 – it's the perfect place for a glass (or a pitcher) of sangria. It really is a fantastic, south-facing outdoor space, with a sunshade – relax on the sun loungers or enjoy some alfresco tapas. There's an outside shower too to rinse off the suncream before going indoors. Inside, there's lots of light, and the huge living room is a wonderful space to entertain. We love the original artwork and colourful wallpapers in the bedrooms. This apartment is perfect for a group of friends, family or professionals on a business trip. We were surprised, as well, given its central, Calle Gran Vía location, how quiet it is here. Step out of the door, and you're on Madrid's most famous street, right in the centre of the capital. Here you'll find some of the city’s most iconic buildings, as well as boutiques, restaurants (let your lovely host make reservations) and bars galore. Take in the incredible views over Madrid from the roof terrace of Círculo de Bellas Artes, a cultural centre offering concerts and exhibitions, a five-minute stroll away. Or, get inspired at Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza with its masterpieces by Van Gogh, Caravaggio and Lichtenstein, nine minutes on foot. Architecture lovers, on the other hand, can admire Ayuntamiento de Madrid, or visit the exhibitions at Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, both under a ten-minute saunter.

Housed in a building that was once home to 18th-century writer and philosopher Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, this beautifully curated apartment blends history and modern comforts in dazzling style.

Elsewhere, bustling Plaza Mayor is a nine-minute walk, the Royal Palace of Madrid is a fifteen-minute stroll and the world-famous Museo Nacional del Prado is eighteen minutes away on foot. 


The Squares of La Latina

It can be difficult to find accommodation suited to larger groups in the heart of the city, but this smart apartment will tick all the boxes. With plenty of space and flexible sleeping options, this central home is the perfect place to spend some quality time with your guests between your sightseeing excursions. 

You'll love the spacious living area, with double-height ceilings and huge windows that flood the space with natural light. The bike sculptures and selection of houseplants add some quirkiness, while the open-plan layout is perfect for socialising.
