Prado Museum is the same walking distance if you fancy a spot of culture, while Paseo de Recoletos, with its impressive trees and sculptures, as well as historic cafes, is fifteen minutes on foot.

After all that exploring, whip up a fresh glass of orange juice with the juicer in the kitchen and have a rest on your private balcony. We love this space with its verdant topiaries and views over the district – it's perfect for an alfresco lunch or dinner. Inside, large windows allow light to flood in. While not overly flashy, Molten Bronze's simplicity is refreshing. The interior is clean, with a few things that really standout, like the kitchen splashback, which is not something we get to highlight very often. For the most part, the furniture and decorations come from Maison du Monde, so it’s solid and stylish, if not unique. The location won’t be for everyone – it’s on a busy street in Malasaña, so it isn’t very peaceful, but there’s loads to do and you won’t get bored.

This apartment is located in the Malasaña-Universidad barrio in Madrid. The neighbourhood is known for its mix of 18th-century architecture and contemporary street art. Plaza del Dos de Mayo with its many bars is a short stroll away, while the Conde Duque Cultural Centre and the Chueca district are both within walking distance. The apartment itself has an open-plan living room, while one bedroom has a desk – perfect for catching up on work. The second bedroom is a little bit more compact but has everything you need for a comfortable night's sleep and it has views over the rooftops and city.

In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

Found in Barcelona's lively Eixample district, some of the best parts of the city are on your doorstep here. The beach and the Gothic Quarter are easily accessed by metro (both in less than thirty minutes), while the local area has plenty of restaurants, bars, and museums to keep you engaged. We love the earthy decor, which takes inspiration from the mountains, and the Juliet balconies are a nice touch. This pad has everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a well-equipped kitchenette, cosy bedrooms, and even a desk for remote working.

We love this apartment’s spacious roof terrace with its views over the city. It has two seating areas, while inside there are two living spaces as well (one has low ceilings, so be prepared to duck if you’re tall). This home is located in the heart of Malasaña, a district known for its history, vintage shops and cool cafés. Explore Plaza del 2 de Mayo with its weekend market stalls or immerse yourself in the exhibits in the Conde Duque Contemporary Culture Center nearby.

The Mailbox

Looking directly out over Plaza de Chueca, Cuadro is in the middle of the action. The two balconies bring loads of natural light into the living room, and they have double glazing, which keeps out the majority of the noise (you might still get a bit though – such is the nature of the centre of Madrid). It would be nice to have some sort of view from the bedrooms, but having the windows facing internally does mean that they’re calmer than the living room, and in the long run, that’s more important.

Furnished with attention to detail and an appreciation for natural materials, this home knows how to make the best out of its assets. While the two balconies make sure that there's plenty of light in the living room and kitchen, wooden details in each room add to a coherent style that is most obviously expressed through the exposed wooden beams. We felt that the two bedrooms could benefit from an update, but the living room with the open-plan kitchen is one of the most stylish spaces we've seen in Madrid so far.

This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.


Windcomb

Just a ten-minute walk from Plaza Mayor, this stylish flat isn't messing about when it comes to location. Interesting museums, high-end shopping and many of Madrid's must-see landmarks are a quick stroll away – including Puerta del Sol, Parque de El Retiro and Palacio Real de Madrid, just to name a few. If you love trying new cuisine, you're in luck – this neighbourhood has an array of delectable restaurants and lively bars to while away the evenings in.

Or, if you're partial to homecooked meals, make your way back to this stylish flat and rustle up something tasty in the kitchen. It has everything you'll need – a large island, built-in appliances and plenty of counter space. The rest of the flat is impeccable, too – two glossy bathrooms (one decked out with bold palm leaf wallpaper, another en-suite) feature rainfall showers, the comfortable bedrooms are cosy and pared-back and the bright living area boats a squishy sofa and a lovely Juliet balcony that floods the room with light.
