With a prime position just a few metres from the sea, it's no surprise that you'll spend most of your days swimming in the Atlantic, sunbathing on the golden sand and sampling Spanish cuisine at the bars and restaurants lining the waterfront promenade. Location-wise, it's hard to beat – you'll have the entire city at your fingertips, so set off and explore.

But when you're not out and about, you'll be able to chill out in style in this contemporary pad. Make yourself at home in the living space, decked out in soft creams and relaxing colours that feel like a respite from the coastal air. The shiny kitchen is well-equipped for cooking anything from Spanish omelettes for breakfast to tapas come dinnertime, while the chic bedrooms are as comfortable as can be. That said, our favourite spot has to be the balcony, where you can savour a glass of Rioja wine and watch the sun go down across the charming city streets.

This apartment is chic and well-thought-out, with a smart L-shaped couch giving you plenty of space to kick back and relax. The bright white kitchenette is well-equipped for you to make a morning coffee to enjoy on the balcony while a sea breeze ruffles your hair. Serene bedrooms come with piles of cushions and a cosy throw for your best night’s sleep ever. From here, a short stroll through De Cervantes Plaza will bring you to La Concha Beach, a pleasing strip of golden sand from which you can watch little white boats bobbing on the tide. Located on a lively street in the Old Town of San Sebastian, some of the city's best pintxos restaurants and bars are just footsteps away. 

La Piedra Blanca

This cheerful apartment in San Sebastian is guaranteed to get you in the holiday mood. The open-plan living area is flooded with light and there plenty of places to sit and enjoy a morning coffee as you make your plan for the day. Your itinerary might involve hiking up Monte Igueldo and enjoying the panoramic views of the bay from the top. Come evening you can treat yourself to some fine dining at one of San Sebastian’s eleven Michelin star restaurants. Down a characterful street in the Old Town, you’ll get the best of the city and the beach in this three-bedroom apartment. Decorated in understated luxe style, design lovers will feel instantly at home. There’s a little less natural light here than some of our other San Sebastian apartments, but the location more than makes up for it, and the cocktail-bar-esque styling is pitched perfectly for evening entertainment. Sink into the yellow rattan-and-velour armchair with a glass of Rioja and engage in conversation or watch a Spanish arthouse movie on the television. The dining table seats six for relaxed dinners with family and friends. Right outside the door, you’ll find labyrinthine streets home to some of the best restaurants in the world, a sweep of sandy beach and tree-lined trails leading panoramic views from the top of Monte Urgull.  

Nuevo Rey

With three bedrooms, a family or a group of friends will be well looked after in this stylish space in the heart of the city. Although the building you’ll be staying is probably one of the least attractive on the street, you’re in the privileged position of being able to gaze out at San Sebastian’s famous Art Nouveau architecture. The open-plan layout and soft seating invite guests to socialise in the living area before heading out for a day of fun. From your central position you can walk to the beach, the city’s museums and cultural institutions, and outstanding restaurants in just a few minutes. The Old Town, just north of this home, is where you’ll find the largest concentration of Donostia’s infamous pintxos bars. Just make sure you’re hungry because you won’t be able to stop yourself when you see the selection.

You couldn’t get closer to San Sebastián’s crescent-shaped Playa de la Concha - it’s situated on an idyllic street just two minutes from the beach. Step out onto your Juliette balcony for luscious sea views or walk a few steps and you’ll be paddling the clear waters of the bay.

We recommend a complete culinary tour – sample as many authentic savoury bites as you can – TX Klub for their wild mushroom rice studded with yuca, Xarma Cook & Culture for their version of salted cod stacked on a skewer, and Rita for creamy oysters and ox chorizo. The best part? This tour is a perfect loop around your neighbourhood and its total walking time is only one hour.

Perfectly satiated and with a cold cerveza in hand, make yourself comfortable on the plump sofa under the glow of the globe floor lamp - this is the best way to relax after a day of sightseeing. In addition to its enviable location, we're willing to overlook the slightly basic interior design thanks to a full-length balcony that is sure to appeal to sun worshippers and lovers of outdoor dining. Down at street level, the nearby San Martin market is ideal for stocking up on seasonal essentials, with a coffee stop and some light retail therapy thrown in for good measure. 

El Balcón

Decorated with woven rugs and an eclectic collection of artworks, this apartment in San Sebastian is both stylish and welcoming. The open-plan kitchen and living area has a bohemian vibe, while still providing everything you need to dine in style. In the mornings, throw open the French doors and perch on your Juliette balcony with a fresh coffee. 

A short ten-minute stroll from the apartment brings you to the waterfront, where you’ll find popular surfing haven Zurriola Beach. Come night time, step outside to enjoy San Sebastian’s lively nightlife and famous pintxos bars. The stunning Basozabal golf club is situated just outside the city (fourteen minutes away by car) and has epic views of the Basque countryside. Those with a car can explore the surrounding area or even visit the neighbouring city of Bilbao for a day trip with ease.

Wander along the beautiful promenade of the Urumea River to reach the Maria Cristina Bridge – a short three-minute walk away or walk three minutes in the opposite direction to visit the cathedral. If beach days are what you’re looking for, then you’re in luck as the golden sands and soothing sounds of the ocean are roughly a ten-minute walk from your door.

In the evening, what could be better than dining alfresco here, and a private chef can even create you some delicious authentic Spanish tapas to enjoy with a glass of wine at the outdoor dining table on the veranda, with a view of the river as the sun sets. 

 Sol en el Río

Nestled in the heart of San Sebastian's Old Town, this apartment is the ideal retreat for large families or groups of friends. Located at the foot of Mount Urgull, this is one of the oldest areas of the city. Start your morning by whipping up a delicious breakfast in the fully equipped kitchen or if you don't feel like cooking, pop down the pedestrianised streets to one of the many nearby cafes. For those who like to surf, sunbathe or swim in the sea, the glorious sandy beach is just a stone's throw away. Wander through the picturesque parks and gardens before returning to the apartment, where you can rest and recharge among the comfortable furnishings.

Zortzi

Absolutely surrounded by cafes, bars, and restaurants, this stylish home in San Sebastián is a foodies idea of heaven. But you don’t need to be clued up on the difference between kale and cavolo nero to appreciate all that’s on offer here. The inside, for one, is a beautiful blend of crisp white and intricate patterns – a credit to the host, as it takes a trained eye to mix as many motifs without a clash. The sleek black kitchen sits in sharp contrast to the rest of the home and is pretty spacious, so if you do want to try and replicate some of the recipes you've come across, then we’re sure your family and friends would love to sample it around the dining table. 

From the lounge, you can keep an eye on the beachfront, but why not move a little closer with a glass of rioja and sit out on the balcony overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. Watching the sunset from here would undoubtedly be beautiful, but we recommend walking six minutes to the Sagües park known for sunset walks. 

Spend one whole day exploring Old Town – it is a thirty-minute walk to get there, but there are a couple of historical landmarks, as well as an observation deck that looks out over the ocean, that’s well worth the trip. When you’re not kicking back with cocktails at one of the bars, or sunbathing on the beach, you can wander the streets of San Sebastián, hoarding as many treats as possible. Take it all back home, kick back, and indulge as you let go of every last bit of stress.

One of our personal favourites is Bar Néstor, which has a cult following for its tortillas and steak.

Guests looking for comfort will enjoy this home’s easy access to the beach, the lift to the second floor and the comfortable bedrooms. Adorned with film industry-inspired decor, there’s plenty of character at this home for four. However, guests who are particularly sensitive to noise may find this location too central, especially when the entire city is celebrating. After all, San Sebastian is famous for its staggering amount of festivals and cultural events, from the film festival to the Semana Grande. That said, the bedrooms are set back so you can always count on a good night’s sleep.
