La Torre de Claramunt is a sleepy village just a fifty-minute drive from bustling Barcelona. Home to an 11th-century castle and plenty of Catalan charm, those wanting a break from city life will enjoy wandering the old-world alleys with local restaurants, bars and bakeries. It's also where you'll find this characterful apartment, set on the grounds of an illustrious estate, bordering on one side to the medieval city centre and on the other side to the green valley. The former home of the Marques de Gironella, it's said he built this home in 1900 to rival his elder brother's castle across the way – no wonder the views at the Castell are so good.

What we love most about this cosy flat is its heritage. It used to be the chapel, and you can feel that history in everything from antique furniture to the sky-high beamed ceilings. But it's not all ancient appeal here – there's a sleek bathroom, a glossy kitchen fit for rustling up tapas and underfloor heating powered by solar panels to keep frosty toes at bay. There's no air conditioning here, but due to the home's high ceilings and excellent isolation, the apartment stays cool in summer, and there are fans too, so you'll scarcely miss it.

Start your morning with an espresso on the sunny patio before strolling among the gardens – you can splash in the shared pool filled with natural spring water, play a game of table tennis, chess or checkers in the Spanish sunshine or use a mountain bike and cycle the unspoiled routes right on the grounds. Looking out across lush countryside, it's a peaceful slice of rural Spanish life.

There's a big, bright, open-plan living space with a practical kitchen, a dining table and a comfy sofa, which opens out to a private terrace with stunning views. You can eat out here at the table, or relax on your private sun loungers. Built next to a Gothic church dating from the 15th century, your home is in the small village of Santa Candia, surrounded by forests. There are great hikes on your doorstep and ancient castles to visit, but Barcelona is just an hour's drive too.

And when it's time to embrace the great outdoors, there are excellent paths nearby for hiking and cycling, or for the more adventurous, waterfall canyoning (your host has some great tips for exploring the neighbourhood). Or simply pad out into the rambling communal gardens where you'll find a shared swimming pool and Jacuzzi to soak up the views of the surrounding forests and neighbouring castle of Orpí. Immersed in nature, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But if you fancy a change of pace, Barcelona and the shores of Sitges and Costa Dorada are all under an hour's drive away. You might find it hard to believe that this home is only an hour's drive from Barcelona. Wander about the six hectares of virgin forest on which this 17th-century country home sits and you'll feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Taken over by chef Sophie Ruggles in 2017, the Australian chef converted the property into an eco-friendly gastronomic travel destination in which people can hold private events, enjoy personalised culinary experiences or simply enjoy the tranquillity of the Catalonian landscape. If you're in that latter group, there are plenty of ways to do just that, whether you're paddling about in the natural pool, lounging on one of the terraces or sitting around the fire pit once darkness descends.

The home's interior leans on the region's rustic architectural traditions, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and terracotta tiling, but is otherwise marvellously contemporary, particularly the stylish bedrooms and sleek bathrooms. There's a modern kitchen in the house in case you fancy cooking for yourself, but there's another larger space in the converted barn in which Sophie can organise cookery classes, wine tastings or private chefs.

In the surrounding region of Alt Penedès, you'll find a wealth of walking routes, quaint hilltop towns and historic castles to visit. If you're craving a day by the seaside, however, the coastal town of Sitges is only fifty minutes away by car and offers a large range of sandy spots and coves to explore.
