Only built in 2021, this log cabin by Lake Myllyjärvi is the stuff of dreams. One wall of the home has been constructed purely out of glass, so you can admire the vista while sitting around the dining table or getting toasty around the fireplace. Stepping out through the door will take you to the covered terrace complete with seating and a barbecue ready for bursts of warm weather and just beyond that is another seating area arranged around a fire pit. There's also a rowboat out here that guests can borrow to paddle on the lake. The real star of the show, however, is situated a few metres away from the main home. We all know that Finns love a sauna, but this cupola-style outhouse is taking it to the next level. As well as a wood-burner sauna stove, there's a dressing room, shower and kitchenette inside for the full spa experience. The nearest town for provisions is Padasjoki only fifteen minutes' drive away, but the larger city of Lahti — complete with the Sibelius Hall concert venue — takes just under an hour to reach by car.

Built on a rocky slope, where the still waters of Lake Kuorikkajärvi lap at the edge of the forest, this place scores highly on location alone. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

Nestled in the woods, this home is the perfect place to forget about everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. It's located in the Northern Savonia region, known for its fresh, clean air and crystal clear lakes – if you need a reset, this is the place to do it. 

The wooden cabin has huge windows that bring the outside in, and the comfy sofa is the perfect place to curl up with a hot coffee. Watch the snow fall in the winter, or admire the light glinting through the trees in the summer months – this is a true sanctuary. When you get hungry, you can fire up the barbeque and grill up some salmon to enjoy on the terrace as you gaze out across Lake Kiltua. Your host can even arrange for a mobile hot tub, so you can enjoy an evening dip beneath the stars. And, perhaps best of all your furry friend can come along too – dogs are very welcome guests here. 

Although you could probably while away an eternity hardly moving from this serene spot, fans of the outdoors are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. This home in the Turku Archipelago is on Finland’s west coast, and is built in the traditional Finnish style. On a quiet residential road, you’ll have use of your own pier and rowing boat, with a larger beach just a short stroll down the street. This region is well known for its fishing, and those keen to catch their own dinner will be delighted by the prospects available here. Sparkling new and in what we think is a really special spot, this cabin has been built in the age-old style, overlooking the lake. Detached but set in a small, exclusive group of similar homes, they sit on the owner's private lakeside land and share a small sandy beach with a pier. So in the summertime, we're talking swimming, boating and fishing – all with the fabulous pine forest as a backdrop. But stay in winter for all sorts of snow sports – the ski slopes are a short drive away too.

All the traditional features are here, with a private sauna, a log burner and a loft room that's perfect for the kids, along with a terrace on the ground floor and a balcony upstairs, but there's a crisp, modern edge to everything. Perfect for active holidays, the owner can hire out bikes and kayaks and can even arrange horse riding.

Take a step away from daily life and retreat to the pastoral charms of the Finnish Lakeland. Rain or shine, snow or sun, you will find plenty to do and see here in all seasons. In the summer, spend your days by the waters of Tahkolahti Bay and Lake Syväri. In the winter, you are just a short distance from the fourth-largest ski resort in Finland, as well as scenic cross-country skiing routes. After a day spent in the great outdoors, retreat to this picture-perfect log cabin, with its abundance of wood, Nordic touches and our favourite feature, the traditional stone-faced wood fireplace. After active adventures, we can think of nothing better than relaxing tired muscles in the Finnish sauna before cooking up a hearty meal to eat in front of the crackling log fire – before long, all worries will be a thing of the past.

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

This brand-new holiday cottage situated within a quiet resort on the shores of a lake makes for a lovely spot to enjoy a relaxed and restful stay. Surrounded by woodlands, steps away from the lakeside beach and close to the sea, this home will appeal to a family or a small group of friends wanting to escape the pressures of city living and experience closeness to nature. 

Arrive to be greeted by the cheerful wooden exterior set against lush greenery – out here you’ll be able to relax on the large terrace, with comfy seating and a luxurious hot tub and hydrotherapy. You can also organise delicious outdoor feasts with the aid of a barbecue grill and savour them at the dining table. 

Step inside to find a light-filled open-plan living room and kitchen, with a comfy sofa inviting you to kick back and relax gazing at the instantly calming lake views outside. There’s also a sauna here for those moments of self-pampering before you head off to the comfy bedroom for a night of restful sleep. Additional sleeping places are available up in the loft, although you’ll have to mind your head here! 

Wake up restored and start your day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee out on the patio and plan your adventures. There are a lot of water sports to be enjoyed on the lake, as well as plenty of gorgeous nature walks in the surrounding woods. Drive to the coast for some spectacular dunes and islands.

Make the most of the snow with endless days, skiing in Rukatunturi or snuggling up indoors at this classy home. The interior is stylish and refined thanks to the silver and grey tones; you also benefit from a fireplace and electric sauna so you’re never without warmth and comfort. Enjoy the views from the dining area over a family meal, or from the balcony as you savour the cool breeze. The ski area is a short walk away – you can reach it just by crossing the road. Get your skis out and have a blast with family and friends on the slopes and warm up once you’re back home with a hot chocolate by the fire and a relaxing session in the sauna.

Made of ancient silver logs, this home emerges from between the quiet trees of the forest landscape as if it’s always stood there. In a peaceful part of the area close to the Swedish border, it’s in a great position for exploring the quieter town of Yllasjarvi, or the livelier resort of Iso-Ylläs. This cabin is ideal for a group of friends or families holidaying together. It’s all functional comfort and welcoming warmth, the multiple fireplaces adding extra snugness in the social spaces. There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards.

Located just thirteen minutes from Inari, this lodge in the sticks has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle back home. We love the timber-heavy interiors, striking fire and sliding glass doors that offer views of the picturesque landscape all around – as if you'd need reminding. Stepping out the front door, there's a decked terrace that leads to your very own sauna for the ultimate rest and relaxation. Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. Come evening, we recommend sitting out on the terrace, sipping sundowners and watching the starry night sky twinkle overhead.

In Finland, going to the sauna has been elevated to a national pastime and this home provides the perfect opportunity for you to find out why. With your own outdoor hot tub and sauna inside, it’s the ultimate destination for some peace and pampering. Interiors are minimalist with flourishes of fur blankets and a cosy wood-burner, but then you don’t need much adornment when you’ve got windows opening up to those views over Lake Haukjärvi. Steps lead down to a little boat jetty out on the lake, for a spot of fishing or sunbathing, and there’s covered outdoor dining if you want to enjoy your catch of the day amidst the trees. Built in 1971 and still retaining some traditional, original features, this home has been recently renovated to create a cosy, compact cabin ideal for an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Just outside the Arctic city of Rovaniemi, this cabin sits in a patch of forest, surrounded by trees. It sits atop the Ounasvaara plateau, one of the best spots to witness the Northern Lights while remaining close to the city. Winter sports enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Olympic training centre, for ice hockey matches in winter and forest assault courses in summer.

It’s a traditional, Finnish-style cabin with the clapboard painted red on the outside and all pinewood inside. The ground floor is dedicated to a dine-in kitchen with a sofa for unwinding, where a wood-burning stove crackling away in the evening keeps things cosy. Tucked up in the A-frame loft space, you’ll find a second bedroom and lounge area with a TV. A wooden veranda lets you sit outside and listen to the sounds of nature around you.

The shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi are 20 metres away where you can take a boat out in summer for a spot of fishing (a rowing boat and outboard are included with a stay here). The Siren

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus. 

Silver Kelo

When we think of Lapland, we think of the Northern lights, lots of snow, and cute as a button wooden chalets. And this home isn't disappointing. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. Set near a lake - which is perfect for summertime dips - the plot is traditionally Scandinavian. Thick tree trunks have been used to create the walls, while further wood panelling separates the bedrooms. The combined living space has got an L-shaped sofa for nights snuggled in front of the fire. A small kitchen has got everything needed for lighter meals. For those hitting the slopes, there's a communal ski waxing room to prep your equipment. And of course, what lodge would be complete without its own sauna to sweat it out after a long day?

Found in Vuokatti Ski Centre, this apartment is a lovely spot to return to after a day of tearing up the slopes. Not only is there a crackling fireplace in the living room next to which you can warm cold fingers, but there's also an electric sauna so you can fully embrace a Finnish tradition.

An added bonus comes in the shape of a balcony with forest views and some seating from which to enjoy this peaceful vista. You also appreciate this scenery rom the communal living space, which is full of comfy furnishings and some pretty jazzy curtains.

Interior design aside, there's a simple reason why people consider this address — the resort's slopes can be reached in a mere five minutes on foot, along with a pair of restaurants. In addition to skiing, the banks of Jäätiönlampi lake can be reached in six minutes' drive and the town of Kajaani is half an hour away.

Given that the home sits in the middle of a ski resort, the distance to the slopes is pretty important and thankfully, you can reach them in a little over five minutes' walk here.
