We can see why this French country estate has been featured in a raft of interior design magazines. Inspired by mid-century modern architects, the layout, furnishings and finishes are not what you necessarily expect from these traditional buildings, but they complement them perfectly. There’s a main house and an attached barn, as well as two independent guest suites (one also has a sauna). Step into the gardens and you’ll find a wood-fired Nordic bath and a pétanque court. This home in Saint-Jean-du-Bois caught our eye after it was recommended by a member of the Plum Guide community. An elegant country chateau, it's perfectly plonked in the heart of the Loire Valley, with Le Mans just a twenty-minute drive away. Here you'll feel like nobility the moment you pull up in the drive. Sat in an eye-wateringly huge 450-acre estate, this place has impressive features by the boatload. Speaking of boats, you can fish or row round the lake, or hop on one of the bikes provided to peruse the countryside, challenge someone to a game of tennis, or dive into the beautiful heated pool. Inside, the home is a super-stylish mix of stripped-back country chic and lux modern design. Each of the nine bedrooms is decorated to a theme, and there are roll-top baths to be found in some of the luxury bathrooms. This is one to savour with family, friends and a few glasses of local wine.

This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

Located in the middle of the Burgundy countryside, there's been a building on this site for around two centuries, something you might be able to tell from the wooden beams, flagstone flooring and thick stone walls. However, it's no longer a humble barn, but a luxurious French getaway.

In the intervening two hundred years, plenty has been added to aid in this transformation. Outside, the most notable change has been the building of a heated swimming pool in the middle of the lush grounds and even more recently — in 2021, in fact — a walled garden has been constructed holding over twenty types of herbs and soft fruits. If you time your visit just right, you might be able to pick cherries and grapes straight off the branch.

When the weather's being kind, there's everything from a boules court and swing to a barbecue on the terrace with outdoor speakers to enjoy. If, however, the clouds are ominously grey, you can keep yourselves occupied on the billiards table or home cinema setup instead.

The nearest village is only twenty-five minutes away on foot and offers all the charming bakeries, charcuteries and markets you could want. As well as that, the unspoilt Morvan Regional Nature Park that surrounds the address means the local area is perfect for long walks or cycle rides. If that sounds too tame, the Magny Cours circuit — a French Grand Prix venue — is only forty minutes' drive away.

We expect you'll spend most of your time in the cheerful outdoor space, decked out with a sun lounger, dining table and sofas to encourage true relaxation.
