This home in Saint-Jean-du-Bois caught our eye after it was recommended by a member of the Plum Guide community. An elegant country chateau, it's perfectly plonked in the heart of the Loire Valley, with Le Mans just a twenty-minute drive away. Here you'll feel like nobility the moment you pull up in the drive. Sat in an eye-wateringly huge 450-acre estate, this place has impressive features by the boatload. Speaking of boats, you can fish or row round the lake, or hop on one of the bikes provided to peruse the countryside, challenge someone to a game of tennis, or dive into the beautiful heated pool. Inside, the home is a super-stylish mix of stripped-back country chic and lux modern design. Each of the nine bedrooms is decorated to a theme, and there are roll-top baths to be found in some of the luxury bathrooms. This is one to savour with family, friends and a few glasses of local wine.

Converted from a fourteenth-century nunnery in a village near the historic town of Poitiers, The Priory Tower is surrounded by valleys, ponds, and woods in all directions. It’s a quiet area, with a peace disturbed only by the occasional church bells, or birdsong. The local markets around here are overflowing with produce (this part of France remains an agricultural centre), and if you want to get away from civilisation, there are all manner of trails, lakes and rivers to explore. As a home, The Priory Tower feels like a part of France that got left in the past, away from the bustle and stress of modern life, and that’s quite a special feeling.

Few things sounds more romantic than a cottage situated in the middle of wine country, where the endless vineyards sprawl and birds chirp. Perfect for a long-awaited holiday away from the kids or a getaway for a budding romance, the home is small but its surroundings are vast and baby-blue French shutters are ever-so charming. After days lounging by the pool or drifting in the nearby river, take the bikes to one of two nearby towns to explore gothic churches and to pick up local delicacies like fresh truffles and a bottle (or two) of wine for enjoyment on the stone terrace. With its long licks of golden sand, fragrant pine forests and impeccable oysters, Arcachon is an unmissable spot on the southwest coast of France. And where better to base yourself than this modern apartment, situated in the heart of town, just a minute’s walk from the seafront. Inside the abode, we loved the subtle nautical touches and we couldn’t get enough of the south-facing balcony, especially at sundown with a glass of red in hand. Rustle up French culinary classics in the compact kitchenette or dine out at a seafood restaurant a five-minute walk from your doorstep. Spend warm afternoons cycling along the promenade, then take the fifteen-minute drive to survey the landscape from Dune du Pilat, Europe’s highest sand dune. When the day draws to a close, retreat home to your quiet bedroom for a blissful slumber in your comfortable bed.

Situated in the commune of La Croix-Valmer, this coastal apartment is not far from the beach, as well as other famous coastal resorts such as Saint-Tropez – which is reachable by car in just thirty minutes. We would love to begin each morning here with a fresh cup of coffee on the private terrace before spending some relaxing hours soaking up the sun as we recline on a sun lounger. Don’t forget to bring plenty of holiday reading to enjoy in these moments.

Then, why not head to the beach which is reachable in a short eight-minute drive, or in the centre of La Croix-Valmer you will find a free shuttle bus to get you there, plus many other amenities including restaurants and shops. While closer to home, you can enjoy a competitive game of petanque or cool off in the refreshing waters of the shared swimming pool.

This Norman farmhouse has been impeccably renovated to create a private and contemporary oasis. The quaint timbered exterior has been preserved, while the inside is tastefully designed to blend rustic with modern. Exposed brickwork, natural wooden floors and stone walls characterise each room, while the sleek, high-spec kitchen and modern bathroom with ambient lighting add an updated twist. The house is set on 1.7 acres of land, meaning you’ll have plenty of privacy. You're surrounded by beauty here –wander through the pretty landscaped gardens and head down one of the winding paths to admire the bucolic scenery.  

The large heated 14x4m pool means you can enjoy year-round fun, and there’s an outdoor shower to rinse off in before curling up on a deck chair. The kids will have endless fun running around in the gardens, playing ping pong, and making use of the two bikes. On rainy days they can retreat to the games room, where there’s plenty of board games. 

You are well placed to explore all the delights of the Pays d’Auge region – the village of Honfleur is a fifteen-minute drive away, with its picture-perfect harbour and expansive sandy beach. For the daily shop, there’s a small village near the house which is reachable on foot. On Tuesday mornings drive seven minutes to the farmers’ market in Beuzeville, where you can pick up some local produce and enjoy an alfresco lunch back at home.

Overlooking the Loire river and sitting in the heart of Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, this home's spot on the map is perfect for those in thrall to the French countryside and the large plant-filled garden – almost as large as the house itself – gives you plenty of space and seating to bask in this picturesque scenery.

There's something equally charming about the home's interior, with a range of design influences on display, from rustic wooden ceiling beams and the period fireplace to bursts of bold floral wallpaper and mid-century-inspired furnishings. Given the small guest count, the kitchen is perhaps more generously sized than you might have anticipated and finished off with pretty tiles, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the bucolic region, there are ample wine estates and castles to discover, as well as two characterful towns that are easily reached by car. The nearest, Saumur, is the French capital of horses with exhibits and equestrian shows to catch, while Angers is slightly further away and is renowned for its medieval architecture and cultural institutions.

The home is packed with modern charm – we absolutely love the muted colours and dried grass vases that invoke a sense of peace and calm, along with the minimalistic furniture that gives the home a contemporary feel. Your private terrace provides a lovely place to sit and get some fresh air with your morning coffee, while the dining set makes a great place to gather for champagne cocktails in the evenings and meals prepared with fresh produce from the daily local market.
