We can see why this cottage was in The Sunday Times' Coolest 100 Cottages' list – it's a Jacobean dream, full of original character and quirky features. Once home to the miller of Plomesgate Mill, it now houses wonderful antiques, such as a fantastic 1700s Breton bed built straight into the wall, a gorgeous oak four-poster and a working 1800s kitchen range. 

Enjoy a tasty full English breakfast (courtesy of the welcome hamper provided by your lovely hosts Beverley and Martin) in the farmhouse style kitchen. Or when the Suffolk sun is shining, dine in the pretty, wisteria clad courtyard. If you’re lucky enough to be here in August and September, there's a mulberry bush in the grounds that guests are welcome to pick fruit from – perfect for making some jam or muffins.

Something else we adore here is the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind this home. Take the dogs for a walk through the meandering footpaths that wind through meadows and ancient woodland. In spring, you’ll see captivating carpets of cheerful daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Whatever time of year you come, though, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from nuthatches to woodpeckers.
 
There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, an arts complex on the banks of the River Alde, just over two miles away. Or head to Aldeburgh (seven minutes in the car) – you can borrow some bikes and cycle there in around thirty minutes too.



Jacobean Gem

This charming Tudor castle, built in 1560, has been fully restored to create the perfect romantic retreat for two. Set in the picturesque Teesdale landscape, this historic property is located near the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. The bedroom features a double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs and offers stunning views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond. The property also boasts an enclosed courtyard garden and two designated parking spaces. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge.

The Daffodil Garden

Marrying sophisticated Regency style with contemporary aesthetics, this classy pad is the perfect base to explore Leamington Spa and its surrounding area. Relax in the chic living room, equipped with a velvet button-back sofa, boutique-style furnishings and a vast sash window looking out to the elegant townhouse-flanked street.

The tasteful decor continues into the double bedroom, which is located at the back of the building, promising a restful night's sleep. Wake up each morning and prepare a hearty breakfast to enjoy at the bright dining table – the pistachio-coloured fridge is a particular highlight for us.

Find yourself in Leamington Spa's centre in less than five minutes on foot, and enjoy the array of luxury boutiques and trendy eateries on offer. The pretty town of Warwick is just a ten-minute drive away, home to an enchanting medieval castle built by William the Conqueror. This fascinating landmark makes for a memorable day out, with guided tours appealing to adults and children alike.

Regency Rest

Slap bang in the national reserve of Malvern Hills, this collection of barns is based in an official Area of Outstanding National Beauty, and the home itself isn't far off that description, too. With vast arched glass windows, cool and contemporary spaces filled with natural light, original wooden beams everywhere, and an indoor pool so luxurious it belongs in a Bond villain's home, you'll want to spend your whole trip at this retreat. The lounge has sweeping views for when you want to relax with a film between glances at the stars, and the dining space is the perfect place to serve an elegant dinner spread or a lazy round of coffees. Explore the national reserve and its diverse landscape on your doorstep, and take a hike to Midsummer Hill - a walk or quick drive away. Bathe in luxury in either the huge shower or the sleek bathtub - the best way to wake up on a getaway.

Around The Paddock

Always fantasised about being Lord or Lady of the Manor? Well, now you can be, sort of. This historic gatehouse (built in 1900) is part of a family estate, located in the Dorset village of Hinton St Mary. Recently refurbished by the owners in a modern but classic style (along with the estate’s stables, also available on Plum Guide), it's been opened up to outsiders for the very first time. We loved the balance between period features, such as the original windows, fireplace and kitchen floor, and brand new additions, like the shiny bathroom. Everything is finished in the best possible taste, with some lovely personal touches. The kitchen worktop is made from cedar from the estate, for example. The owners clearly want their new guests to feel at home, as they’re happy to accommodate needs, whims and fancies, from arranging a paid-for chef or babysitter, to offering a choice of seasonal duvets, luggage storage, locally sourced ingredients in the welcome pack and everything you’d need to bring your baby (high chair, cot, dinnerware, pram, potty, etc). The home’s location is another definite selling point. At the end of a small village lane near a cricket green and traditional pub, it’s picturesque and quaint. The nearest town is Sturminster Newton where there are shops and cafes, a great deli and butchers. This home makes a great base to explore the famous Dorset coast and countryside or simply settle back and relax by the wood-burning stove and imagine your servants are just out of sight. 

The Manor Lodge

This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.


Chaffinch Cottage

With farmland to the front and the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind – this gorgeous home, part of a cluster of mill buildings, is in an idyllic spot. 

Take a stroll through winding footpaths of the reserve that meander through meadows and forests of giant cedars and ancient oaks. In spring, you’ll see enchanting carpets of bluebells, primroses and daffodils, but whatever time of year you come, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from chaffinches to woodpeckers. There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, just over two miles away, and to the sea at Aldeburgh (or it’s seven minutes in the car). You can borrow some bikes too if you prefer to cycle.

You don’t have to go anywhere to get some fresh air, though. There’s a lovely old cobbled, sunny courtyard where clematis and wisteria clamber up the walls – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the welcome hamper of breakfast goodies. There’s another patio area, too, with fragrant rambling roses – ideal for a glass of wine.

The home itself is a sympathetic conversion of a stable and grain store. We adore the character features inside, such as the traditional 17th Century Suffolk white brick flooring, wood-panelled walls and old oak floorboards. Part of the original manger has been incorporated into the wall dividing the kitchen and the living space area – a lovely touch. Open the stable doors here and listen to the blackbirds singing at dusk. Furnished with antiques, this cottage will appeal to couples and pet owners looking for a luxurious country bolthole.

In the heart of Frome, this Georgian home blends period character with a sense of calm. Light streams across tall windows, a roll-top bath invites slow evenings, and every detail is designed for comfort. Outside, cobbled streets lead to artisan markets, bookshops, and cafés where you can spend hours browsing or people-watching. Day trips open up to Somerset’s treasures, from Bath’s Roman spas to the gardens of Stourhead. Evenings are for intimate dinners in town or lingering over a glass of wine at home. It’s a place for romantic getaways or restful escapes, where history, culture, and quiet luxury come together.

Timeless in Frome

Situated on a historic private estate in the heart of Gloucestershire, this dreamy cottage is the perfect setting for your next family getaway to the Cotswolds. 

You’d be hard-pressed to find a cosier base than this – boasting a snug living room complete with soft throws and a toasty fireplace, this is the kind of place we all dream of coming home to after a chilly day in the English countryside. Warm up with a cup of tea on the sofa or head upstairs to the family bathroom for a relaxing bubble bath before drifting off to sleep in one of the cottage's quiet bedrooms.

The next morning, start your day with a breakfast of locally produced organic goodies from the local farm shop or – if the weather’s on your side – head out to the garden and soak up some sun. This is the perfect place for little ones and four-legged friends to roam but there’s plenty to explore in the local area if you fancy a change of scenery. Breathe in the sweet scent of lime blossom as you travel down the 800-metre private road leading out of the estate – with Westonbirt Arboretum, Berkeley Castle, and The Cotswold Water Park all within striking distance, you've got plenty of destinations to choose from so why not ditch the GPS and see where the day takes you?

Sugar & Lime

If this characterful Norfolk cottage were any sweeter, we’d eat it right up. The exterior is pure chocolate box, and the inside is bursting with beamed period charm. The host is an interior designer with a true collector’s eye and has filled the cottage with an eclectic mix of vintage pieces and curios. From taxidermy vignettes to Serge Moullie inspired art, there are unexpected details at every turn. 

Summer’s evenings are spent in the fragrant country garden drinking Pimms and looking out over meadowland, and in the winter months, the wood burner keeps the cosiness levels running high. You’re just a short drive from North Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches, and the bustling town of Burnham Market. If you don’t feel like a drive, the surrounding countryside is ripe for walking, and the local pub is just five minutes away. 

Pound Cake

This gorgeous converted barn allows you to connect with nature. Perfect for hosting no matter the weather, enjoy a garden party on the lawn or get festive indoors with a roaring fire. The rustic kitchen and ample dining space are perfect for those who love to cook with love for their family. The Wendy house, tire swing, and games room provide endless entertainment for children who love to play. 

Wooden beams adorn the ceilings, adding to the farm life vibes. Look out of the window to spot any free–roaming ducks from the surrounding one–hundred acres of land, who have come to say hello. You may also hear the clucks of the neighbouring chickens.

Guests can enjoy the sprawling countryside with nature walks and wildlife photography. Feeling adventurous? Pop down to The Bear Trail, an obstacle course packed full of challenges that will leave you craving a sit down at the end of the day. Luckily for you, this home provides guests with plenty of seating areas – inside and out.
