Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

Get together for movie night in the modern living area (there’s Netflix on the smart TV). Breakfast can be made that bit brighter by throwing open the French doors and letting the sunshine in. Or, take the whole show out to the patio on a summer morning. If the kids tire of playing in the Wendy House in the garden, there’s a play park just around the corner. Locally you’ll find a convenience store, café and gym. Walk a little further for a major supermarket, pubs and restaurants. Or jump in your car (there are four private parking spaces at your disposal, you don’t have to worry about parking) and you’re in the bustling heart of Reading town centre in just 10 minutes.

Quaint and cosy, this old shoemaker's cottage in the heart of Cromer is a perfect seaside retreat for two. It's just a two-minute walk from Cromer Beach and the Victorian pier, making it a top-notch spot for couples to unwind. 

Inside, the home hasn't lost any of its traditional charm, thanks to the wooden floors, timber beams and vintage furniture. Lighthouses and wooden shoes line the shelves, paying homage to the cottage’s excellent seaside location as well as its history. The living room is warm and comfortable — on chilly nights, snuggle in front of the electric fire with a good book and a glass of wine. While the kitchen is on the smaller side, it still has everything you need to whip up a quick breakfast or light lunch. 

When it's time for dinner, we recommend grabbing a bite to eat at one of the fabulous restaurants, delis, and cafés in town, then finishing off the evening with a nightcap at the pub across the road.

Converted from a hayloft in a Victorian stable block, original features like the wooden beams and porthole windows give the space a unique and rustic character. But you’ll still find plenty of modern comforts – the master bedroom features a walk-in dressing room, there's a charming Juliet balcony that opens the living room up to the treetops and there's a new log burner for staying cosy no matter the weather. Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.

Secret doors and treasures galore, this Grade II listed home in a quiet part of Long Bennington village is steeped in history and culture. A visual feast – you’ll find carved furniture from Africa, a Rajasthani chest, a coffee table from China, and red and gold chairs from Spain. It’s no wonder your hosts are both artists who love to travel. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet. More is more here with curiosities in every corner, but there’s plenty of space to relax too. Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). There is billiards and table tennis in the outhouse if the big kids want to get involved, too. A boot room makes a no-stress entrance for muddy wellies after yomps through the surrounding countryside and the endless lawns call for picnics and croquet in the sunshine. Your nearest village is Piercebridge, situated three miles away, with its own farm shop and proper pub. Further afield, the Yorkshire Dales, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Barnard Castle are all within a forty-five-minute drive – perfect for family days out in the fresh air.

Summer’s evenings are spent in the fragrant country garden drinking Pimms and looking out over meadowland, and in the winter months, the wood burner keeps the cosiness levels running high. You’re just a short drive from North Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches, and the bustling town of Burnham Market. If you don’t feel like a drive, the surrounding countryside is ripe for walking, and the local pub is just five minutes away.

Located in the coastal village of Marlborough, this home makes it easier than ever to relax. Out in the palm-filled garden, you can sit back in the hot tub before getting out and taking a perch next to the fire. Alternatively, the alfresco lounge on the terrace isn't a bad spot for a languorous evening over a bottle of wine.

Heading through the glass doors, you'll see the interior is just as geared towards laid-back living. Not only in the decor — heavy as it is with faux fur, house plants and neutral colours — but also in the numerous sumptuous spots where you can kick back. During the colder evenings, you can get cosy on the sofa with the log-burner crackling in the background or lie back in the freestanding bathtub. During brighter days, the dining table in the conservatory complete with an upright piano is sure to see some action.

As you can probably guess from the nautical view from many of the windows, the seaside isn't too far away. South Sands Beach is only seven minutes away in the car, for instance. That's just one of many beauty spots in the surrounding South Devon AONB and once you've worked up a hunger from seeing all the locale has to offer, simply drive over to Salcombe in six minutes and hit up one of the seafront gastropubs.

This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.

If you're looking for somewhere that embraces slow country living yet has all the little luxuries you'll need for a getaway, this converted goat shed is sure to do the trick. Situated on the grounds of a family-run farm dating back as far as the 1300s, we think it's the perfect bolthole for a romantic, restful weekend in the great outdoors.

Inside, vaulted ceilings sport original wooden beams, while enormous glass walls flood the space with sunlight. Books and board games line the shelves, cushy sofas are perfect for snuggling and a delightful wood burner keeps everything toasty warm on chilly evenings. We love the small but well-equipped kitchen – you'll have everything you need to rustle up dinner – and the sumptuous bathtub is just the ticket after an invigorating walk through the countryside. What’s more, the medieval skyline remains unspoilt, so why not stop at a cafe and enjoy the view?

Plus, Beverley Westwood is roughly a two-minute drive away from this home where you can enjoy leisurely walks, a round of golf or even watch some horse racing at the racecourse.
