Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

If you love the thought of drifting to sleep while gazing up at the stars, this dreamy cabin could be the holiday home for you. The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. It’s impossible to leave here feeling stressed out.

Surrounded by 64 acres of vineyards, orchards and farmland, this luxurious barn conversion puts you between the coastal beauty of the South Devon AONB and Dartmoor National Park. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the Southwest Coast Path to discover secluded bays and white cliffs, or make the twenty-minute drive to Bantham Beach for a day on the soft sand of the classic British seaside. 

Though if you want to stay closer to home, you’ll find plenty of activities right on the estate. Gin and wine tastings are on offer and walking the grounds you’ll come face to face with white-faced Dartmoor sheep and red Devon cattle. Should the weather turn, you’ve got a private indoor swimming pool and a dedicated cinema room with plush red theatre chairs and a big screen to keep you entertained. But sunny days can be spent on the patios, dining, reclining and unwinding in front of the rolling Devonshire scenery.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

Since then, it has evolved into the country's second-best party and wedding venue (according to The Times), but in our opinion, it really comes into its own when booked as a relaxing rural retreat. Sitting on the edge of Dartmoor, it packs in plenty of rustic charm, making it the perfect place to enjoy a well-deserved break with family and friends. The interior pits modern art, bright throws and eye-catching rugs against original details like oak beams and more farmhouse features, including the Everhot range cooker and wood-burning stove, to create a stylish and welcoming home. Step into the immaculate garden, and the first thing that will catch your eye is the inviting pool with breathtaking views over the surrounding national park – it's seasonally heated to a balmy 28°C, so you can enjoy a dip whatever the weather. In addition to the pool, there's also a tennis court where you can unleash your competitive side. Your host Alistair, who co-owns the farm with his brother, will be there to cater to all your needs. As a former superyacht captain, he's an expert in delivering five-star luxury service.

We love the cosy feel of the living space, especially the characterful window seats. And the location? It’s ideal for exploring. Lyme Regis Front Beach is a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the town's shops and eateries are nearby, too.

This exquisitely renovated bakehouse provides a sweet escape amidst the glorious rolling hills and wooded valleys of East Devon. It sits in the lovely village of Musbury, within walking distance of the local shop and pub and just a twelve-minute drive from Lyme Regis and its spectacular Jurassic coastline. 

The interior strikes the perfect balance between contemporary comfort and authentic charm. Look closely, and you'll spot ample inklings of this home's storied past, from the beam-clad ceilings to the Juliet balcony, where flour bags were once hauled from the loft below. On the first floor, the open-plan living area is blessed by heaps of natural light, offering a free-flowing canvas of calm with lofty vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and partially exposed stone walls. Plush sofas huddle around the wood-burning fireplace – a lovely space for chilly evenings – while the fully-equipped kitchen and diner offer direct access to the garden. Set on the popular Marine Parade in Lyme Regis, this home is an ideal base for a small family or group of friends. You’ll need to take care with the steps and uneven ground here, and because of the desirable location, you may hear a little noise during your stay. But, we think you’ll be too busy soaking up the fresh sea air to notice. The key thing that caught our eye here is the secret passageway to the beach – so stroll down to the sea, after which, a plethora of beachfront eateries await ready to serve up an authentic coastal dinner.

More a way of life than a holiday home, this unique stay offers a wealth of outdoor activities and add-on experiences. Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

Lie low for a while at this Devonshire countryside retreat, nestled deep within a sprawling 86-acre estate. This lovingly hand-crafted shepherd’s hut is meticulously designed throughout to offer every creature comfort you could imagine. The wine fridge will keep your tipple perfectly chilled, while the underfloor heating will keep your toes toasty. Cosy up in front of the TV and while away an evening with a relaxing movie night. Should you ever wish to leave this charming nook for two, you’ll find the historic town of Tavistock is just a five-minute drive away, where you’ll find bustling shops, restaurants, and an award-winning gastro-pub complete with a sunny beer garden. Or up the ante and take off into the beautiful wilds of Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley (both less than half an hour's drive away) – you’re perfectly placed equidistance from them both.

Little Bo Peep

Set in a row of Georgian houses on Sidmouth’s endless esplanade, there’s no better place to soak up the seaside than from this pretty apartment. Enormous sash windows reveal a balcony, ideally set up with a dining table for elevenses in the golden sunshine. Pour a glass of your favourite tipple to the sound of waves lapping the shore and caws of seagulls swooping overhead. Later on, when you’re ready for your lunch, fire up the barbecue on the terrace and prepare the catch of the day in the impressive kitchen. You’ll notice the interiors are tastefully decorated, with classic furnishings and quality linens to ensure unbridled comfort. After relaxing with a cup of tea on the plump sofas, put on your sun hat and mosey down to Sidmouth Town Beach. Roll up your trousers, pick your way across the pebbles and paddle in the brisk waters. If you’d like to expend a little more energy, embark on an eight-mile clifftop walk along the Jurassic Coast to the pretty village of Beer – country pubs with real ale and slap-up grub await.

Only minutes away from the Royal North Devon Golf Club, this home – coincidentally built by the same designer in 1865 – is the perfect option for large groups looking to explore the Devon coastline. 

And as much as this is a haven for golfing enthusiasts, it’s also the ideal location for beach lovers who get to spend sun-drenched days on Westward Ho! Beach. You can see those very shores from the perched hot tub in the backyard. Ease yourself into the warm water with a glass of wine and enjoy the views as you relax after a day of activity. 

Inside, find plush furnishings in muted greys, greens, and blues that come alive in the natural light of the large windows. There’s an understated elegance that works beautifully alongside the modern and homely elements of this home. Sip wine, spot seals, or simply bask in the seaside scenery – no matter what you get up to, it's a little slice of heaven. Need a break from the sunshine? The living area has an open-plan layout ideal for socialising, while each bedroom is as comfortable as the next. With Hope Cove’s eateries within walking distance and the beach just a short stroll away, it has everything you need for a laid-back stay on the South Devon coast.

Overlooking the Marine Parade, this apartment is a great option if you’re looking to experience the vibrant heart of Lyme Regis. It’s worth noting it’s possible to hear street noise from the neighbouring bar, but you will have incredible sea views from the cosy living room. A car parking permit can be supplied on request. Plus, you’ll find everything you could need within easy reach. Stroll to the beach or adventure further along the Jurassic Coast towards Sidmouth and Axminster.

And you'll get the personal touch too, as host Deborah and her family love to greet every guest on arrival. Style-wise, this home is equal parts classy and edgy; velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws contrast with neon signs and curious light fixtures in the bedrooms. The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings. 

The Early Risers

The fact that this timber-framed building is fuelled exclusively by renewable resources and built with ecology in mind makes staying here even sweeter. This bright and gorgeous cabin is equipped with everything you need to relax and tune into nature, starting with the covered outdoor hot tub and a bright open-plan living space that will protect you from the elements. During the colder months, the wood-burning stove provides the perfect atmosphere for a night in, and the fact that the cabin is encased in glass from two sides means that you'll always have a great view of the countryside. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.
