Nestled in the rolling hills of Hampshire, this charming flintstone cottage has sprawling views of the surrounding countryside and easy access to walking trails that take you through fields and woods and into picturesque villages with charming pubs. Roaming around this area (including visiting nearby Winchester) feels a bit like taking a step back in history – the air is fresher, the pace of life slower, and the atmosphere much more relaxed. During our visit, we were blown away by host Victoria's friendly nature and attention to detail. She lives on-site in the main house, and on arrival, she'll greet you with homemade jams and fresh eggs from her free-range chickens. Her quintessential English garden is a truly magical place, filled with herbs, flowers and fruit trees – imagine birds singing, deer munching on apples and stargazing under the clear night sky. On clear mornings, open the French doors and enjoy coffee on the terrace in the sunshine. Though there's not heaps of space – there's no living area, and the kitchenette is on the smaller side – it's still a cosy place for a couple to experience an idyllic stay in the country.

Beautiful inside and out. This villa's contemporary 1950's Italian-inspired interior gives way to sprawling Hampshire farmland. Watch sheep graze from in and around the private pool or ample outdoor seating. And let the peaceful atmosphere follow you inside by admiring the views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Location-wise, you're a little secluded, which is half the appeal, but Winchester isn't more than a few minutes away by car. Location and looks? You can see why this polished house made it into the collection. Plus, the addition of the private gym and fire pit is another nice touch here.

Whisk your loved one away to this rural retreat on the outskirts of Hungerford, Berkshire. The countryside surroundings are idyllic, especially from the heated pool – it’s exclusively yours to use between June and September. Guests don’t have access to the gardens, though. Inside, there is a lot of room for just two people, but the living area is still cosy with plush sofas. Bear in mind that it’s not suitable for children, including babies. Location wise, Hungerford’s antique shops, unique boutiques, and friendly pubs are just 6 miles away.

A historic gatehouse on the grounds of the Shaftesbury Estate in rural Dorset, this petite one-bed lodge has recently undergone a loving refurb by one of the estate owners, Lady Shaftesbury. She obviously has a great eye for design, as her palette of delicious apricot and duck egg blue stylishly updates this vintage cottage into not just a twenty-first-century home, but a home with charm and character. There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met. All in all, this cosy country hideaway is perfect for city escapes, with nearby the great beaches of the Jurassic coast, the New Forest, the National Trust property of Kingston Lacey, cities like Salisbury or Portsmouth and traditional seaside in Bournemouth. And while it feels like one of a kind, a twin lodge and two maisonettes in a neighbouring cottage are also available, so you can bring your friends too (although you might want to keep this little secret to yourself).

Bright, open and immaculate in every way, it's a place to relax, take a deep breath of fresh, country air and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. And it's less than a half-hour drive to both Southampton and Portsmouth.

Set in the sprawling Wiltshire estate that once belonged to the twelfth Earl of Shaftesbury, this former riding house exudes the spirit of the original stables thanks to a meticulous restoration – modern comforts meet ancient artefacts and authenticity. It's one of those homes that takes your breath away from the second you open the front door. The owners have made no effort to cover up the fact it's from a bygone era – and that's why we love it, true to the past with period artwork, original features, beamed ceilings, even a banqueting hall for grand feasts (which feels very extravagant when you're having your cereal). The velvet furnishings and exposed brick only add to the step back in time. An honesty bar is housed in a secret cupboard by the billiard table, and there are floor-to-ceiling bookshelves where you can select a novel to lose yourself in. Each bedroom comes with a luxurious roll-top bath, and the wooden dividers that once separated horses have been cleverly repurposed to create privacy screens. Outside, vast acres of the manor's parkland are yours to explore, so remember to bring your welly boots. This home is a fine example of outstanding restoration – countryside lovers may never want to leave.

Glamping never looked so good than at this charming cabin nestled within a wild-flower meadow of a 2500-acre family-owned farm estate. Don't be fooled by its unassuming aluminum exterior. Inside, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and lovingly converted by your hosts to provide all the creature comforts. Expect spotless interiors with a well-equipped traditional kitchen complete with a Belfast sink, a neat en-suite shower, and luxurious Egyptian linens on the king-sized bed and bunk beds for the kids. A welcome hamper brimming with local goodies, including milk, eggs, freshly baked bread, and marshmallows for those obligatory s'mores, will help to settle you in. And you'll bank a blissful night's sleep here – your only neighbours are the occasional peacock or deer strutting by. While away your days watching nature unfold outside on the terraces - the private elevated balcony looking out into surrounding woodland (a great spot for den building) is a beautiful place for a cuppa. Or don your hiking boots for a country walk – perhaps with a pit stop at the welcoming local pub (within walking distance) for a swift pint. Just be sure to make it home for dusk as the sun sets over the surrounding countryside. However you spend your days, the apartment is made for putting your feet up and relaxing. A large TV shows your favourite films and TV series, whilst the glass dining table is made for sharing meals. For a treat, sit on the balcony with a glass of wine or beer and enjoy the peace and privacy.

You'll find this 18th-century cottage in the heart of the South Downs, nestled on the edge of the illustrious Avington Park. Cosiness personified, the snug sitting room has a crackling wood-burner and squishy sofas that beckon for lounging, either with a glass of wine on chilly evenings or a good book on winter afternoons. A separate drawing room is a perfect spot to gather for family game nights, while the rustic kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up Sunday roasts to enjoy around the dining table. Our favourite is the third bedroom, with its exposed beams and vaulted ceilings – it has two double beds, making it a great option for kids.

Part of the glorious 5,500-acre St Giles House estate, it's been personally and immaculately renovated by the estate's owner (real-life nobility Lady Shaftesbury) to stunning effect. The natural and historical character - original lead windows, log burner and dove grey stone slabs - pack a punch, but it's her Ladyship's keen eye for style that has elevated this home into a truly romantic stay. We're talking about bold splashes of colour (a vibrant coral in the living room and soothing forest green in the bedroom) plus beautiful illustrated artwork and the highest quality Egyptian cotton sheets. This remarkable country mansion has had quite the tumultuous history. The estate dates back to 961 and is listed in the Domesday Book. The land was once home to a priory for the monks of Saint Swithun, until Henry VIII appropriated it for his royal courtiers. For ten years, King Charles II took up residence here with Nell Gwyn and their children, and it continued to pass through the hands of the nobility in the proceeding centuries, gaining a reputation as a hedonists' paradise during that time. After a faithful restoration in the latter half of the twentieth century, it's now open to guests looking for a truly inimitable stay. As you can imagine, there's history at every corner, from the painted ballroom ceiling to the portraits hanging in the hallway. The main living room is a sight to behold, with shelves packed full of books, ornate chandeliers and a grand piano sitting at one side, and the huge banqueting room is equally spectacular. The bedrooms are divided into eight apartments and cottages, many with their own kitchens and living rooms for added privacy. Outside, there are expansive grounds to take a morning constitutional, as well as the River Itchen running through with a boat ready for a paddle. The historic town of Winchester is only twelve minutes away in the car, while the first station on the heritage Watercress Railway line can be reached in under ten.

This cosy cabin is the perfect little bolthole for couples wanting to escape to the country. The location right at the heart of the New Forest means you’ll feel miles away from the stresses of daily life – as you fly down country lanes on your bike, you’ll feel your worries melting away. 

The cabin is just outside of Brockenhurst, in an area that feels secluded but isn’t too far from the nearest shops. You can stroll to the pub in fifteen minutes, which is a welcome sight after a day spent hiking the trails. A four-minute drive will get you to beautiful Beaulieu, which is well worth an afternoon strolling around after lunch in a cafe. The abbey is just six minutes from the cabin – the tranquil ruins are always popular with history buffs. 

If you need an ice cream on the beach for it to feel like a holiday, you’re in luck. Fifteen minutes by car will have you on a sandy shore, though we can’t guarantee it’ll be paddling weather. 

For us, the real joy of this cabin is its countryside setting. Walking just five minutes from the front door will see you on walking and cycling trails. When your feet start to feel sore, head back to the cabin to soak in the luxurious claw-foot tub before spending the evening in front of the fire. Absolute bliss.

With plenty of space to spread out, this ground-floor apartment in an Edwardian home near Westbourne is a fantastic base to return to after a day at the beach. Having a private entrance and garden ensures you have all the privacy you need here, plus private parking is a real premium in this area during the summer months. Although there's room for six, we think the main bedroom is better suited to two adults and two children, while the second bedroom is ideal if you're travelling with another couple. When it's time to explore, you'll find the beautiful sandy beach of Alum Chine just 350 metres away, whilst a 15-minute walk will get you to the eclectic mix of boutiques, cafes and bars of Westbourne and its beautiful Victorian arcade.

Located in the heart of Southampton – just a three-minute walk to Oxford Street, which is home to several great eateries for meals out – this apartment is a great base for city living. After breakfast here, catch up on important work at the home’s desk space before you head out for the day.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the water of the harbour and admire the boats in Ocean Village – just a short ten-minute walk from your door. Or, indulge in a shopping spree at West Quay shopping centre – reachable in twelve minutes on foot. 

What’s more, the Red Funnel Ferries that will take you to the Isle of Wight for the day are just a fourteen-minute walk or four-minute drive from this home, and if you find yourself inspired, the apartment’s desk space is the perfect spot to begin a novel set on the island. This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms. The vaulted, wood-beam ceiling is twisted with stringed lights for a fairytale effect and there’s plenty of room at the rustic wooden table for the group to dine inside (if you’re not enjoying an alfresco meal on the terrace, that is). Come evening time, the plush sofas in the living room are set around a wood-burning stove.

Staying in this home is like stepping into a scene from an Austen novel – we can just picture Emma Woodhouse wandering the grounds. Corniced ceilings, antique furniture, country views – there's so much character in this Grade II historic building. The home is part of a grand country estate in Wiltshire, but you'll feel as if you have the whole place to yourself in this private south wing. With the living room’s ample seating in front of the fire and the charming wooden breakfast table, you will be equally comfortable drinking tea or wine in elegance. Make sure to stop by a farm shop on the way to cook up a delicious meal in the kitchen or pre-order fresh or frozen meals to make your stay even easier. Take walks in the gorgeous landscaped gardens, stroll over the bridge on the water, and as night falls gather round the fire pit with drinks. You're just a six-minute drive from Stonehenge, and it's worth travelling to Salisbury to visit the historic cathedral and wander the cobbled streets. This pet-friendly barn conversion in West Sussex is perfect for a couple or solo traveller seeking a peaceful rural retreat. A rock garden and tended lawn provide ample opportunity for sundowners and alfresco meals, while inside, cosy country-style decor and beamed ceilings provide plenty of English charm. You’ll need to climb a flight of stairs to reach the mezzanine bedroom but waking up to apex views of the surrounding nature is a fair reward. Beautiful wood flooring leads you through the lower level – we love the living room, with a squishy chaise sofa that invites you to sink into it and relax. The quaint wooden shutters on the windows add character to the space – it’s easy to imagine cosy nights snuggled down here after a day out walking in the New Forest National Park or exploring the cobbled streets nearby. 

The kitchen boasts all the mod cons you could wish for and blue cabinetry – a colour scheme that’s carried throughout this cottage with distinctive touches that give a nod to your proximity to the coast. For nights in, you can rustle up a delicious home-cooked meals and in the summer months, pour yourself a glass of wine and settle down on the terrace to enjoy your dinner alfresco. 

For days out you’re perfectly placed to wander the High Street's shops, explore the old town quay or even hop on the ferry to head over to the Isle of Wight. With so much to do and your cottage waiting to welcome you home, you’ll enjoy a memorable stay. 

Hideaway in the Heart

Back in the 16th century, this manor home was managed by the Clerk of the Privy Seal to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. And this apartment within the manor extolls all the extravagance of a Tudor era country retreat. Cross the Italian courtyard to enter and, stepping inside, you’ll find a charming living room adorned with oil paintings and set around an old fireplace. Original wood floors run from here into the kitchen, which has plenty of natural light from the sash window.

The jewel in this apartment’s crown has to be the master bedroom. Decked out in Tudor-style splendour, you can drift off to sleep in the hand-carved four-poster bed, swathed with satin curtains. An exposed brick fireplace would have welcomed weary travellers back in the day and the separate seating area is particularly atmospheric when lit by candlelight. Four further bedrooms all have their own character and style in midnight-blue, sage-green and coral, all packed with plenty of old-world charm.

Firstly, it’s just a 50-metre stroll across West Cliff Green to the beach steps making this the perfect base for a family-friendly holiday by the sea. There are an array of restaurants and bars within walking distance whilst Bournemouth Pier and the town centre are also accessible by foot. We love the sea views from this place’s private garden and who wouldn’t want to dine or relax in the light-filled conservatory? If you’re a group of eight, then two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living space, but it’s a spacious room. What a great find this is.

Perfect for a rural retreat with easy access to the coast, this home is just the spot for a family or group of friends. While inside the home is well-equipped and tastefully decorated, it’s the outdoor space that caught our eye. Generous gardens invite little ones to run around and play while the grown-ups relax with a glass of wine on the terrace. The cherry on the cake? It’s the hot tub for us – ideal for relaxing under the stars after a busy day exploring all West Sussex has to offer. 

The Divine Canter

This Grade-II listed home's white exterior and large bay windows make this address stand out from its neighbours and it all looks rather palatial, we must say. This impression continues when you head inside and spot the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the ornamental fireplaces and the lacquer dining table. The kitchen is rather more rustic in appearance, with exposed brickwork working nicely alongside the skylight constructed out of the sail from a boat — a thoughtful nod to the region's nautical culture. Step out of the French doors and you'll find yourself in the home's garden, which comes with tidy plant rows, an alfresco seating area and a hot tub for those warm summer evenings — or even those chilly winter ones if you're feeling hardy. The home's location in the seaside village of Hamble-le-Rice presents a plethora of distractions to keep your guests entertained. It's possible to see the Hamble River rolling on by from the kitchen and bedrooms windows, and if it gives you the inspiration to see it up close, it only takes two minutes to walk to the historic waterfront with its quay and marinas. The port city of Southampton is only a twenty-minute drive away, too.
