This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. As well as the generously sized bedrooms, there are also three separate living rooms and kitchens, many with log-burning fireplaces or — in the case of one — an Aga stove to keep your toes warm. As well as there being no shortage of space to socialise in the traditionally appointed interior, the home also benefits from two garden spaces, one with a hot tub large enough to accommodate eight guests on a warm summer's evening. Begin your morning with a cup of tea on the terrace – Gaynor leaves milk and biscuits for you to snack on – then don your walking shoes and head out for a ramble on one of the many walking paths in the area. After a day in the fresh air, reward yourself with a pint and hearty meal from the pub down the road, or if you're in the mood to cook, rustle up dinner in the modern kitchen. For a change of pace, Lichfield's charming array of shops, cafes and restaurants is just twenty minutes away, while adrenaline junkies will love Alton Towers, only a thirty-five-minute drive. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. With the Peak District on your doorstep, you won't run out of activities to fill up your day. Hike the Monsal trail or plan a visit to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall – there's something for everyone.

Staying on the topic of food, this cottage is centrally located in this gem of the Peak District. The town is famous for its Bakewell pudding, but that's not all there is to attract foodies – there's an array of award-winning restaurants and pubs too. Add to that a fantastic Monday market, as well as a good selection of shops and a great golf course, and you have the recipe for plenty of fun times. For walkers, Bakewell Station (The Monsal Trail) is a five-minute walk away, and it's been a popular trail since the Midland Railway line was closed in 1968. Other attractions include Dovedale, one of the most stunning valleys in England, as well as the caves at Castleton, the spa town of Buxton and Chatsworth House.

Nestled on the outskirts of the Peak District, this holiday cottage is great for nature lovers and families. Your host can provide equipment for little ones and well-behaved pets are welcome, and there is space for alfresco dining on the large patio. Our favourite spot to unwind is the private hot tub, especially with those countryside views. Indoors, the main staircase has some gaps, so younger children will need supervision. You won't find a washing machine here, but for shorter trips, we think it's a great choice. You'll want a car here – the Peak District National Park is easily reachable, while thrill-seekers will find Alton Towers just a fifteen-minute drive away.

On arrival, this place rises up like a striking, red-brick barn. The lawns are vast – perfect for kids that want to run around and let off steam. The back garden is home to a private hot tub for post-walk soaks and outdoor dining on the patio overlooking the bucolic Derbyshire scenery. 

Inside, the design embraces the country aesthetic with a wood-burning stove in the brick fireplace in the living room, arrow-slit windows showing how thick the stone walls are, and old wooden lintels on display in the sloped bedrooms.
