This 19th-century listed cottage was once part of the Old House of Keys, a former meeting place for Manx politics and the Isle of Man's parliament. It should come as no surprise that this home is steeped in history. Features like wooden beams and exposed stonework only add to that heritage, while modern updates like auto-closing windows and a sleek kitchen keep things contemporary. 

We think it's utterly warm and welcoming – you'll feel at home as soon as you open the door and step into the roomy living area. Sprawl out on the cushy L-shaped sofa after a busy day, catching up on your favourite Netflix shows. When you grow peckish, let your culinary skills run wild in the kitchen before settling down for a meal at the dining table in front of the cosy log burner. Come bedtime, make your way to the sumptuous main suite and drift off to dreamland underneath vaulted ceilings.

Location-wise, right across the street is Castle Rushen, so you're truly in the centre of town. It's a quaint area, with a few cafes, eateries and a pub nearby, and Castletown Beach is a twenty-minute stroll away. For a fun day out, hop on the historic Steam Railway that runs through the south coast – it connects to the island's capital, Douglas, as well as the seaside villages of Port Erin and Port St Mary.

A Grade-II listed former stable in the middle of Dunskey Estate, this home is a truly glorious spot. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

The Coachman's Dog

This cottage sits on a 2000-acre estate where walking trails through the woodlands bring you to waterfalls, lochs and the craggy coastline of Dumfries and Galloway. A forty-minute stroll down a forest track brings you to a deserted beach, and the coastal town of Portpatrick is a twenty-minute walk away. A welcome pack of local produce – eggs, butter, bread, home baking, artisanal cheese and the estate’s handmade toiletries – awaits you on arrival. Perhaps head out to the sunny dining spot on the lawn for your first meal. Here you’ll find a fire pit to keep the evening chill at bay. The home itself is beautifully decorated. The living room is like a wild meadow with its magenta and violet mural of wild birds and flowers and pot plants seem to fill every nook. Yet there’s a grand feeling to the tufted velvet sofas, and the writer’s desk in the corner is an Edwardian antique from Dunskey Castle itself. Once the wood-burner is crackling away it’s super cosy too. Come bedtime, bedrooms are a fairytale fantasy with plush beds fit for a princess. Especially the twin room, with silk drapes flowing over the beds. With deer, pheasants and wild birds filling forest walks, you can feel like you’ve stepped right into a Disney movie. 

A Gaggle of Geese

Oh, to be by the sea. With stretches of blue as far as the eye can see, this home is an idyllic escape for those seeking fresh air, heavenly views and the seaside lifestyle all in one. Spread across two floors, large windows invite the sunshine inside all day long – one of the perks of a south-facing property. While neutral interiors make the home even brighter, giving way to a laid-back beach house theme throughout. Bonus features such as the free-standing copper bath, a secluded home office as well as outdoor and indoor dining areas offer extra special finishing touches with elegance and style. 

And did we mention, you can be on the beach in one to two minutes? The outdoorsy type and those fond of watersports are in for a treat as the island's best surfing spot is two minutes away at Gansey beach, where you'll also have free reign to go kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming. Once you've worked up an appetite at the beach, walk another two minutes to The Shore Hotel for some proper pub grub in true seaside style – that means fish and chips are given. With the seaside villages of Port Erin and Port St Mary, also just a five-minute drive away, you'll gain a real taste of the Isle of Man by the sea.

If you're looking for a get-back-to-nature escape, then this Victorian-era lodge in the Scottish Highlands is perfectly suited. Located in the heart of picturesque Portpatrick, you'll have plenty of glen walks, forests, beaches, lochs, gardens and waterfalls on your doorstep, not to mention a delightful cottage to call home. We love the frolicking fauna and novel palettes that give off an air of elegance from the moment you step over the threshold. Oversized prints consume original walls, while velvet cuddle chairs, antler chandeliers and Suzani-inspired medallions combine for an eclectic aesthetic. Come evening, head out into the paved garden, light up the firepit for a grilled dinner, and sip bubbles while breathing in the unspoiled, rural air. Outside of your home, Portpatrick's harbour and golf course are a short five-minute walk, while the Dunskey Castle is a twenty-minute stroll up the coast. That's if you'd ever want to venture out beyond this stately sanctuary of pastoral pleasures.

Sitting on the southwest coast of Scotland, this home provides the perfect escape for families and friends. Think squashy sofas, a cosy cottage-like kitchen and a crackling fireplace to unwind with a wee dram at the end of the day. The woods immediately beside the lawns close to Corsewall House and just a few minutes’ walk from the cottage are a dedicated children’s fun zone. The private garden provides a lush playground for children (and adults) complete with an 18-metre zip wire, a climbing frame, a slide as well as three swings. It is the perfect spot for parents to relax with a spread of local foods and perhaps a drop or two to drink while the kids play – picnic anyone? And if that wasn't enough, the kids can also bounce their hearts out on the 14-foot trampoline by the edge of the lawns. There's even a campfire area in the woods for toasting marshmallows. Beyond the site, the local area also offers plenty to keep the whole crowd busy, from sprawling coastlines and colourful fishing towns to aristocratic homes – your most difficult decision will be choosing where to visit first. 

Forest's Edge

While the idea of staying in a castle sounds rather splendid, they do tend to be rather large places and if you're only a small group, it's easy to get overwhelmed. The solution, then, is to simply stay in the best section, as is the case with this penthouse apartment inside Dunksey Castle. Built at the turn of the twentieth century for industry magnate and Member of Parliament Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing, there are some original features to be found inside, such as a cast-iron bathtub now filled with plants, baronial fireplaces and salvaged mirrors. However, the rest of the living quarters are thoroughly modern. with plant-themed artwork, velvet furnishings and plush rugs. The master bedroom is particularly spectacular with the bay windows, four-poster bed and bathtub in the corner. It's possible to see the sea and the village of Portpatrick from here, and it only takes twenty minutes on foot to reach these. Elsewhere on the estate, there are lochs, waterfalls and even a maze to explore.

The Tallest Tower

Each season brings a new vista to the sprawling, 2000-acre estate this home is set on. Spring brings carpets of bluebells to the forest walks, winter sees snowdrops poking their heads through the undergrowth and in the summer, rhododendrons burst onto the scene in magenta and crimson. Back in the day, this grand stone cottage was set aside for the estate’s gardener and the decor leans into the horticultural theme with a stunning mural of ferns, forest and foxes in the living room. Floral patterned rugs sit on the hardwood floor, and faux fur blankets on tufted leather sofas keep the living room feeling cosy on cold nights. Get a fire crackling in the grate when the temperature drops. The kitchen is designed for farmhouse-style cooking with a big range cooker in the centre. It’s the decor that really grabs your attention though, with a handful of plates and vintage posters adorning the duck-egg-blue walls. Outside you’ll find a huge private garden where outdoor dining is on the cards at the barbecue and fire pit lawn. Views from here stretch across the hills and fields, where curious cows graze nearby. Exploring the estate you’ll find walking trails leading to waterfalls and lochs, and there’s a hedge maze right on your doorstep. The surrounding forest is filled with wildlife and you might spot deer, foxes and pheasants on daily walks.  

The Horticulturalist

An ideal base for a holiday on the Isle of Man, this seaside escape is located, just a five-minute drive away from the airport, minutes away from an array of cafe's and restaurants and a tempting 100 metres away from the nearest pub. But the home boasts far more than its close proximity to nearby eateries. Perched on the edge of the harbour, you'll be wowed by panoramic views of the coastline from the open-plan living room's beautiful bay window. Sit and take it all in over a home-cooked full English breakfast, before setting off on a seaside adventure exploring Castletown itself and the neighbouring villages of Port Erin and Port St Mary. Take a pit stop for some well-deserved coffee and cake if you happen to be exploring the villages – and it goes without saying that an ice cream on the beach is an absolute must. On foot or by car, enjoy roaming around without a care in the world, knowing you'll have all the necessary comforts waiting for you back at this home.

A fascinating fusion unfurls inside an Edwardian Castle in form of the Royal Apartment. There's an unusual architectural interplays within this unique Castle apartment, hidden down a private drive in deep Scottish countryside. At first glance, the Apartment is grandly presented inside a 19th-century castle, but a closer inspection reveals contemporary features dovetailed into the original design, cleverly expanding the space and light, to create a luxury self-catering homestay that's bespoke down to the last detail.

There's a lot to discover within the grounds of the estate, from waterfalls and lochs to beaches and walled gardens. Perhaps best of all, it's possible to get meals cooked by the castle's 3AA-Rosette head chef delivered to your front door, as well as personalised bouquets from the in-house florist.

Life of Riley

Tucked away in the grounds of a 2,000-acre coastal estate, this quaint cottage and its enchanting surrounding are plucked from the pages of a storybook. Inside, the home oozes elegance with plush fabrics and romantic cherry blossom hues. When we stayed, we were smitten with the Japanese rice-paper screen, mother-of-pearl headboard and the underfloor heating that kept our toes toasty after long yomps through the grounds. While the kitchen is fully stocked with accoutrements for rustling up your favourite dinners, call upon your host’s head chef to deliver a Michelin-quality meal straight to your table. After a cup of tea in the sunshine on your quiet patio, pull on your walking shoes and explore. You’ll find secret waterfalls, lochs and a maze right on your doorstep. Jump in the car and take the eight-minute drive to Killantringan Lighthouse or if you’re feeling brave, plunge into the brisk Irish Sea at Knock Bay Beach. Return back to your bolthole in the late afternoon to catch the last of the sunshine; set up the lanterns in your courtyard, pour a glass of prosecco and sink into the outdoor bathtub beneath the blooming camellia tree. Bliss.

Located in south Belfast, a short walk from the wine bars and boutiques of Lisburn Road and a ten-minute drive from the heart of the city, this place is certainly well-connected. Need to take a trip out of town? Adelaide Train Station is only five minutes away. When it comes to the home itself, our favourite feature was the raised decking – it was the ideal spot for an alfresco glass of wine. Inside, the place is well-appointed and the bedrooms are clutter-free and comfortable. 

Bring It on Home

This apartment situated in the trendy Queens Quarter is a great place to base yourself while visiting Belfast – be it for business or pleasure. Surrounded by great cafes and restaurants, and just moments away from Belfast University and the city centre, you could hardly ask for a better location. The place might be compact, but it's comfy and inviting, perfect for a solo traveller. 

It's Just Me 

This home in south Belfast dates back to the 1930s and looks fairly typical from the outside, but behind the front door lies an explosion of colour, vintage furnishings and all sorts of eclectic decorations – you probably won't be surprised to learn that this characterful interior design was put together by an illustrator-slash-designer. The home's small terrace is another welcome touch, but the huge Ormeau Park is five minutes' walk up the road when you're after a larger green space. You're well sorted for trendy cafes, restaurants and shops on the adjoining Ormeau Road, too.

You'll have tons of outdoor space in this quiet part of Belfast, with a peaceful garden and patio. Inside, things feel homely, with comfy furnishings and plenty of space for families or groups of friends. While it's not in the city centre, the home is just a fifteen-minute walk from Ormeau Road, where you'll find plenty of local bars and eateries. 

Branagh's Garden

Set in Belfast’s EastSide, this apartment is an excellent choice for those who want to come and go from the city whenever they choose. Getting into the city couldn’t be easier – catch the Glider from the bus stop across the road, and you’ll arrive in less than ten minutes. While the home's interior isn't the most characterful, you’ll find everything you need, no matter the length of your stay. There are some stairs to climb though, so it may not suit those with limited mobility.
