The great outdoors: nowhere does it better than Scotland. Here, around a forty-five-minute drive from Aberdeen, you'll be nestled along with a small collection of cabins and cottages inside a vast private forest – far from the madding crowd. Perfect for lovers of hiking, cycling and wild swimming, there's even a range of bushcraft and wild wellness classes to choose from, run on-site by trained instructors.

The home itself is a cleverly converted hayloft, with a covered outside area and accommodation over two floors. Crucially, the living room is on the top floor, taking full advantage of the superb views. Styled to perfection with a mix of deep tones, fun artwork and comfy furniture, it's a surprisingly modern space that wouldn't look out of place in any major city. And your eyes aren't deceiving you; there really is a bright pink second bedroom. It's the addition of a log burner and the odd vintage milking stool that really ground this place in its stunning surroundings.

The site has quite a few surprises in store too. There's a beautifully dressed bring-your-own-bottle pub for socialising with the other guests, a veggie garden and clutch of hens, plus a luxurious wood-fired sauna to relax your aching muscles after a day hiking. And there's an excellent shop on the site, so although you may be a fifteen-minute drive from Banchory and thirty-five from the coast at Stonehaven, you're unlikely to run out of the essentials with plenty of local produce on hand.

Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Designed by Young Architects of the Year NORD in 2012, this funky home was part of a huge renovation process which restored previously derelict Victorian farm buildings into the magnificent estate that today welcomes guests to soak up the very best of Glen Dye. Glen Dye is an outdoors paradise, a nature lover's dream come true, as the large estate sits amidst 15,000 acres of woodland and rugged countryside. There are miles and miles of tracks on your doorstep for walking, cycling and running. These run through one of Britain's finest private forests or across miles and miles of moorland wilderness.

On-site, you'll also be in blissful serenity as the house comes with its own wood-fired hot tub in the garden. Pick some seasonal vegetables from the garden in preparation for a delicious homemade feast. With a big Green Egg barbecue all to yourselves – we bet you can smell the delightful smokey aromas already. There are a number of other facilities available for free use, too, including the custom-built wood-fired sauna and the BYOB (bring your own booze) pub conveniently located right next door. In addition, you'll find a shop on the premises which sells a collection of staples, including fresh local meats and fish, homemade ready meals and fresh eggs produced by the free-range chickens that belong to the owners. 

All this, and we haven't even got started on the dreamy house yet. Styled with tasteful pops of colour, eccentric artworks and contemporary furnishings throughout – the space offers a peaceful sanctuary to retreat to after a day's adventures in the Scottish Highlands. High-quality furnishings and accessories provide ultimate comfort and practicality, while special finishing touches such as the record player and vinyl collection make your stay here all the more memorable.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. When the weather is fine, you’ll want to soak up the sunshine in the suntrap terrace, dining on charcuterie lovingly prepared by your host. There are thoughtful touches at every turn here – it’s impossible not to get into holiday mode. 

Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

Sensational countryside vistas steal the show at this barn home set in 25 acres of Aberdeenshire wilds fringing Dunecht. If you’re looking for a rural escape, this delightful cottage in Carlincraig is sure to fit the bill. Although just over 30 miles from Aberdeen, also known as The Silver City due to its granite buildings, this home feels a world away from any sort of metropolis. Upon arrival, rolling hills and fields stretch for miles around this stony bolthole in the countryside. But the experience isn’t exactly rustic. Your host welcomes you with a luxury hamper, packed with nibbles and a bottle of champagne. Light up the wood-burning stove, get cosy under the ANTA of Scotland blankets, and say cheers to luxe country living. On sunny days in the garden, the little ones can keep entertained with the swing-ball set, or building their secret den in the tipi. And while they play, you can get round to lighting up the barbecue. Perhaps you could even indulge in a wee dram of whisky to stay warm while you wait. Of course, if you’re not in the mood for cooking, your host can arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. We’re sure the whole family will love the fine, fresh, Scottish fare on offer.

With the heather-bruised hills of Perthshire around you, this Grand Designs-style home puts you amid munros, riverside paths and enchanting forest walks. The charming town of Aberfeldy is a five-minute drive away, or an hour-long walk along the river path – perfect for hounds. The lofty, open lounge caught our eye inside with a modern woodburning stove in the centre for chilly evenings. The kitchen is a dream with a range-style cooker and everything you need (even some things you don’t, like a warming drawer) for self-catering. Those bringing the dogs will appreciate the fenced-in garden and kids can hang out in the garage outside with its ping pong table.

You'll find this home amongst the rolling hills in the sleepy village of Redpath. This stone cottage is classic with contemporary touches – making it an ideal base for those exploring the area.
