New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

This splendidly restored Victorian house will whisk you away to another era. Designed by a prominent 19th-century Scottish architect, this place retains its original charm. We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Peek through the telescope in the lounge and see if you can spot the isle of Arran in the distance. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Your little ones will also find plenty of books, toys and a games console. You can sip a cuppa undistrubed, while the kids play make-believe in the grand rooms and sprawling garden. If you can tear yourself away, miles of stunning natural trails await you in nearby Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. In the evening, stoke the logs in the fireplace, pour yourself a glass of fine Scotch whisky and make the most of your waterside abode.

The property is a stunning holiday home located in a secluded loch-side setting with breathtaking views of Loch Etive and Glencoe. This spacious six-bedroom home can accommodate up to twelve guests and boasts six bathrooms, making it perfect for holidays with family and friends. The house features a fully enclosed garden, Wi-Fi, an Aga, and ample parking. Guests can access the Loch directly from the garden via a track and boat owners can use the owner's slipway and buoy for an additional charge. Fishing rods and mackerel lines are also available on request. The surrounding area offers many popular destinations such as Inverawe Smokehouse and Shop, Taynuilt village, and Oban, which is about 30 minutes' drive away. As well as three open fires for warming up cold hands, guests can also take advantage of the country-style kitchen with an Aga and a selection of rolltop bathtubs. If you really don't feel like lifting a finger during your stay, there's a team of chefs that can arrange the week's menu using locally foraged ingredients and housekeepers to cater to every whim.

When the sun makes an appearance — or you're feeling suitably warmed up after a dram or two — there's a hot tub in the garden, which also has children's play equipment and a barbecue. The Isle of Skye sits twenty minutes' drive away if you fancy a day trip, too.

If you want to try and spot the ever-elusive Loch Ness Monster, this old stone clergy house that has sat on the banks of the famed body of water for over a century-and-a-half lets you do so in the utmost comfort. Inside, the rooms are filled with varnished wood furnishings, boldly printed rugs and roaring fireplaces — so you can look out the windows at the loch without feeling cold in the slightest. Other noble flourishes come in the shape of the four-poster beds and the two deep claw-footed bathtubs. There's even a small garden out the back, but you're hardly short of beautiful outdoor attractions around these parts. Urquhart Castle is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Dores Beach can be reached in twenty minutes in case you're in the mood for a bracing wild swim. Although the address feels both rural and secluded, the town centre of Inverness only takes seventeen minutes to reach in the car, too.

Get away from it all at this stylish, freshly renovated cottage with its stunning views of the Isle of Skye's countryside and mountains. We love the large, light-filled open plan living room, which is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. The vistas from the large windows are sublime. Gather around the contemporary log burner with a wee dram as the mist rolls in (there's underfloor heating here to keep you toasty as well). There's a lovely terrace off the master bedroom, perfect for a morning coffee. Or, when the weather is sunny, relax in the lawned garden.

When you feel like exploring, Dunvegan Castle and Gardens within the 42000-acre MacLeod Estate is 14 kilometres away. Or go for a hike around the spectacular Cuillin mountain range, 15 kilometres from here. The island's capital, Portree, set around a natural harbour, is also well worth a visit, and it’s 24 kilometres from this stunning home.

Nestled in the seaside resort of Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands, this cabin has tranquillity running through its core. When you’re not cosied up by the wood burner or sipping your favourite tipple on the decking, there’s much to explore in the local area. Stroll to Dornoch beach, head to Loch Fleet for a spot of seal watching, or wander the fairways of Royal Dornoch Golf Course – the options are endless.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. Though the cottage feels miles away, it’s actually only a thirty-nine-minute drive from Glasgow so you can get your fill of the bright city lights. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon.
