This villa really benefits from its location situated on a headland overlooking the bay and you will too – the Ionian Sea views are wonderful from the terrace and private pool. You can admire the Venetian castle and pretty harbour as well, while shaded dining and seating areas give cover from the hot Kefalonian sun. With a sweeping panorama taking in Agia Kyriaki and Myrtos bays, this villa up in the hills of Agkonas is the perfect island retreat. Days can be spent by the swimming pool, lying on the flat loungers and taking in the views of mountains and sea. On the first floor, a bamboo pergola shades the outdoor dining area and a hanging chair looks out over the sprawling vista. 

Inside, it’s an industrial-style space of poured concrete and iron railings with a couple of vintage pieces keeping things characterful. There’s plenty of prep space on the concrete worktops in the kitchen and washed wood cabinets feel bespoke. From the hillside vantage point, you’ve got uninterrupted views of the horseshoe bay below, where crystal shallows lap at bone-white sand and boat charters await at the stone harbour. A leisurely twenty-five-minute walk into the hills (or a five-minute drive) sees you in the town of Stavros, where you’ll find a handful of tavernas, cafés and supermarkets. Or, make the ten-minute drive along the coast to Frikes for a bigger selection of places to dine.

While away the days on the terrace, which juts out of the hillside, overlooking the bay. There’s a dining table out here for candle-lit dinners as the sun sets, and a row of loungers to soak up the rays during the day. Inside, we like the old-world touches like the apothecary coffee table and stone-built sofa in true Greek island style. And somewhere in between the two, Melissani Cave offers a tranquil lake inside a rocky cavern which you simply cannot miss – which shouldn’t be too difficult, at just an eight-minute stroll from this apartment.

In the village of Karavomylos, this charming home also offers views of the Ionian Sea, ten metres from the water’s edge. If you can drag yourself away from these vistas by the glass sliding doors in the lounge, it’s worth taking a look at the elegant decor. Blushing tones of orange and muted reds create a welcoming and warm vibe, inviting you to sink into the plump sofa with a glass of fresh fruit juice in the morning. With wooden and woven elements peppered throughout, the home stays true to the natural splendour of the island.

Beautiful Assos is thirty-two minutes away by car, and well worth the trip. The town is known for its colourful houses, traditional architecture, and the ruins of a Venetian castle. It’s one of the most picturesque spots on Kefalonia, so make a day of it – there are countless attractive spots for a sunset meal and cocktail.
