Summer in Kefalonia is best spent outdoors. At this particular villa, you'll find landscaped gardens, a private pool, loungers, an alfresco dining area with seating for four people and a balcony that simply calls out for a fresh Greek coffee. Set above the picture-perfect coast of northeastern Kefalonia, this home captured our attention at first glance. The views are hard to beat, the rooms are elegant and it’s just a short drive to the beautiful beaches of the coast – the nearest is 1.8km away. You’ll also find the pretty harbour of Fiscardo within easy reach – making this an ideal location from which to explore the island as well as relax in your own private sanctuary. There are two pools (one is shallow for little ones) and a hot tub, plus the terrace has a barbecue for al fresco dining. You’ll also find an adjoining annexe with a small kitchen and two bedrooms – providing plenty of space for groups to stretch out and spend quality time together. 

Essence of Beauty 

With views of the Strait of Ithaca and the verdant green hillside rising out of it, we picked this Kefalonian home on its sunny outlook alone. The pretty, traditional Kefalonian architecture, bright decor and generous outdoor area are a bonus – so is the private swimming pool, angled to overlook the deep blue on the horizon. Though there's enough room for everyone inside, alfresco meals on the terrace – when you're not dining at the local tavernas – will be an irresistible prospect. Perched on the hillside above a quiet, white-sanded bay, this villa has views for days. From the terrace, you can spot Polis Beach – a horseshoe of pristine sand and crystal water – which you can reach by private path in just a few moments. Down in the bay, you’ve also got a charming stone pier where you can charter a boat for the day. There’s a kantina here serving simple Greek food, or you can make the twenty-five-minute walk (or five-minute drive) to Stavros in the hills for a little more choice. 

It’s all about the terrace here, where the view is simply sublime, especially at sunset. When the sky is tinged powder pink and the water glows, it’s the perfect time to dine at the outdoor table, or just enjoy a tipple or two. Throw open the double doors to let the sea breeze flow into the living room. The dark wood furniture calls back to the good old days and the open-plan living area is a social space. Both bedrooms have direct access to the terrace, so you can step straight out into the morning sun after a good night’s sleep.

So, take your pick of places to soak up the Mediterranean sun – the balcony, terrace, or private pool are all waiting. 

Blissful Horizon

You'll need to pinch yourself when waking up in this Grecian paradise. Nestled among the hills and olive groves of Kefalonia, this characterful home offers privacy and seclusion. Gazing out from your private terrace, the glistening expanse of the Ionian sea beckons. Arrive at the nearest beach after a scenic fifteen-minute drive – if you can resist stopping at the inviting tavernas you'll pass on the way.

The open-plan living space offers a uniquely homey retreat, warmed up by the use of wood and rustic natural fabrics. Sunsets are magical moments from the terrace of this cute little villa for two. Perched on the hillside above the caster-sugar sweep of sand that is Polis Beach, the private patio faces west – so you can catch the golden hour reflecting on the water every evening. There’s a table for dining and drinks out here and a couple of sun loungers to make the most of the rays during the day. The villa itself is pretty in pink, and filled with Greek tradition inside. Think stone-built sofas, terracotta tiles and crisp white walls. A charming medley of darkwood furniture feels old-world. We love the sunny bedroom, with its window out to the bay and double glass doors opening straight onto the terrace.

Follow the private path straight down to Polis Beach, a short stroll away. In the bay, you’ve got a rustic kantina and pier where you can hire a boat for the day. That’s not to mention the horse-shoe of pristine, sandy beach. Heading just along the coast, the town of Frikes is a ten-minute drive away. Or, make your way further into the hills to find the village of Stavros, a five-minute drive or a twenty-five-minute walk (uphill).

Kiss by the Sea

This villa really benefits from its location situated on a headland overlooking the bay and you will too – the Ionian Sea views are wonderful from the terrace and private pool. You can admire the Venetian castle and pretty harbour as well, while shaded dining and seating areas give cover from the hot Kefalonian sun. When you feel like exploring, the harbour at Assos has a beach or from the villa, steps lead directly down to the sea where there is a small swimming platform. Other attractions include Myrtos Beach, around fifteen minutes by car, while Fiscardo is 20 kilometres from this home.

A leisurely twenty-five-minute walk into the hills (or a five-minute drive) sees you in the town of Stavros, where you’ll find a handful of tavernas, cafés and supermarkets. Or, make the ten-minute drive along the coast to Frikes for a bigger selection of places to dine.

While away the days on the terrace, which juts out of the hillside, overlooking the bay. There’s a dining table out here for candle-lit dinners as the sun sets, and a row of loungers to soak up the rays during the day. Inside, we like the old-world touches like the apothecary coffee table and stone-built sofa in true Greek island style. The duck-egg blue kitchen is reminiscent of farmhouse pantries and both bedrooms have double French doors opening up onto the terrace.

One glance at this villa's sweeping sea views and you can't help but feel completely at ease. The Ionian's crashing waves and Kefalonia's craggy coastline paint the perfect backdrop to your stay, whether you're relaxing on the main suite's balcony, sipping wine on the terrace or splashing in the infinity pool. And while you could spend your days lounging by the pool, this is a great base from which to explore the nearby beaches, coves and picturesque harbour. Guests should note there are lots of steps here, so it may not be suitable for those with reduced mobility, but you will find a lovely terrace and your host can help organise a range of extra services – including excursions and local tours.

You’ll need a car to make the most of your stay, but you can reach waterside tavernas on foot.

Created by the owner’s mother – this elegant villa has a wonderful location. The terrace, surrounded by scented lavender, has panoramic views of the Red Rocks, St. Jerusalem and Alaties beaches. There’s a private pool to cool off in and a gazebo for when you need some shelter from the Greek sun. You can enjoy the vistas from inside too – from the living room, the spacious attic bedroom, which is on a mezzanine above the living space and the another bedroom, which also opens out onto the terrace. When you fancy exploring, attractions nearby include the stunning Myrtos Beach.

With a sweeping panorama taking in Agia Kyriaki and Myrtos bays, this villa up in the hills of Agkonas is the perfect island retreat. Days can be spent by the swimming pool, lying on the flat loungers and taking in the views of mountains and sea. On the first floor, a bamboo pergola shades the outdoor dining area and a hanging chair looks out over the sprawling vista. 

Inside, it’s an industrial-style space of poured concrete and iron railings with a couple of vintage pieces keeping things characterful. There’s plenty of prep space on the concrete worktops in the kitchen and washed wood cabinets feel bespoke. In the master bedroom, the honey-hued stone wall on display sings of old Kefalonia, and the second bedroom has a distinctly Moroccan vibe.

When it comes to exploring the area, you’ll find a mini market within walking distance, and there’s a beautiful, unspoilt local beach a ten-minute drive away with a handful of cafés to choose from.

Stand on the terrace, gazing out across the Ionian Sea to Meganissi and the mountains of northern Greece and trust us, you’ll understand. Whether you’re dining alfresco or soaking up the sun on a lounger, the view is something you’ll never tire of. You can dip your toes into the coastal waters in a three-minute stroll, or it’s just ten minutes on foot to Frikes with its selection of harbourside tavernas for a bite to eat.

It was the jetty just below the villa that caught our eye, however, which offers a sunbathing area right next to the ocean. It’s only shared with two other villas, so you don’t have to worry about overcrowding. The traditional harbour of Sivota is just a 45-minute walk away, where you can enjoy a meal on the waterfront.

This understated villa is designed with the surrounding landscape in mind, complementing the nature and quiet beauty of Lefkas Island. Interiors are laidback and breezy, with neutral tones, shabby-chic furnishings and soothing blue tones. Windows frame the seascape-like paintings in the living space and glass doors in the kitchen open wide onto a neat terrace – it’s the perfect spot for long, lazy dinners that last well into the evening.
