Found next to Brooke Square in Skyros Town, this villa was built way back in 1892 and it still overflows with charm more than a century on. Much of this is down to the stunning view of the Aegean Sea that comes with the elevated position, which can be enjoyed in the garden, balcony or even out through the large windows that also bathe the space in natural light.

Some typically Skyrian architectural features have been retained — including a large patch of exposed rock in the dining room — but it's fair to say that the interior has been modernised over the years. This means that you'll find whitewashed walls, sleek bathrooms and a rather smart kitchen complete with an island.

Just two minutes' walk from the home, you'll find a pair of Museums, one devoted to archaeology and the other to ethnology and folklore. Skyros's whitewashed streets are pleasant to wander about aimlessly, but Magazia Beach is only a ten-minute walk for when you want a dip in the sea.

This traditional villa lies just outside the charming Greek village of Milesi, less than an hour's drive from central Athens. Although the kitchen is a little dated, you'll be able to enjoy home-cooked meals both indoors and out. The private pool offers the perfect escape from the heat, and the balcony is an ideal spot for an aperitif. The grounds here are extensive – seven acres, in fact – making them perfect for kids to play, or to have a picnic under the sun.

Beach days are easy with Oropos beach a short drive away. If you prefer village life to the hustle and bustle of Athens, try a day trip to Malakasa or Milesi.

Designed by a French architect in the 1930s, the special house has been modernised over the years but is still rich in original features. From the grand oak staircase to the terrazzo tiles in the hallway, it's a visual feast for nostalgic travellers.

And there's more to see in the gardens – that's right, there are two gardens. On the east side, you'll find a sun lounger-fringed swimming pool as well as a peaceful veranda. Although you are a little further out, the home's location encourages a non-tourist view of this historic city. With middle eastern restaurants, indie shops and cafes along Acharnon street, as well as the National Archaeological Museum just a short walk down the road, there's plenty to see and do nearby. Back home, you've got plenty of space to sprawl out and relax after a busy day of sightseeing, while multiple dining areas make the apartment perfect for entertaining guests.

This apartment is a botanical oasis that reflects the neighbourhood’s luscious energy. There’s a rooftop garden adorned with tropical plants, whilst walls of windows invite the greenery in. Out here, you can watch the sunrise over the city with a coffee in hand, turn pages of your holiday read from the terrace loungers and share a glass of Greece’s national drink, Ouzo, at the golden hour. We can’t forget the inside here, adorned with contemporary furnishings and modern artwork – this place feels like a hidden city gem.

When you’re ready to check out the city sights, you’re right in the Athenian cultural hub. Start your day at a neighbourhood cafe before admiring the artwork at The National Museum of Contemporary Art. The city’s white marble Kallimarmaro Stadium is nearby. If you want to climb the steps to the Acropolis and admire the former colossal temple, the Olympian Zeus – you’re just a bus ride away.

Take in the views of the Kallithea neighbourhood and the Aegean Sea from this apartment's balcony. As you can see from the photos, it also overlooks a railway line, so you'll hear some noise here. You can also enjoy the vistas from the large floor-to-ceiling windows – this place is light and bright. The kitchenette is quite compact, but it has all you need for creating a Greek meze, or there are plenty of eateries nearby if you don't fancy eating in. The beach is within walking distance, as is Stavros Niarchos Park's cultural centre. Bear in mind, though, if you want to visit Athens and its landmarks, you'll need to hop on public transport or hire a car.

We love the panoramic vistas of the local area and the Aegean Sea from this home's balcony. Inside, the kitchen is compact but has everything you probably need to create some meze. We'd say the bedroom is a little on the small side, too. All in all, though, this is a decent base for your Greek adventure. Stavros Niarchos Park is nearby – you'll find a cultural centre and a variety of flora, including olive trees and Greek aromatic plants. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops to enjoy, and the beach is also within walking distance. If you want to visit Athens, it's a ride away, so you'll need to use public transport or hire a car.

With wonderful sea views from the private balcony and stylish living space, this home, situated on the 5th floor, is a bit of a gem. While the open-plan living space is quite roomy, the kitchen area's work surfaces for food preparation are limited, and the bedroom is fairly compact. But the location more than makes up for any little compromises. You’ll be near the coastline of Kallithea and a stone’s throw from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, while Athens is a short drive away.

Ideal for romantic city breaks and business trips, keep your stay in Athens simple. We love that this stylish base puts trendy cafes and bars within strolling distance. The tourist-heavy sights are further out, so why not visit the on-site concierge desk for travel tips and recommendations? While the high chair comes free to those bringing little explorers, a cot can be provided for an extra fee. You shouldn't expect breathtaking views from the balcony, but the outdoor space is a nice bonus.

That said, a metro a few metres away runs straight to Monastiraki, multiple green spaces are within walking distance, and the famous Lycabettus Hill can also be reached on foot.
