Sea-facing views across Crete's rolling hills make this villa's terrace a stand-out. The covered patio, the private pool and the sunny lounge chairs provide ample opportunities to enjoy the fresh air and the scenery. Some of the elements inside are a bit flashy for our liking – particularly the boldly-printed blinds – but we do appreciate the exposed stone walls, which add a touch of authentic character to every room. And the location is perfect for exploring the island's southern stretch. While Kalamaki Beach is the nearest, we recommend a trip to Matala, a laid-back village with a sandy beach and bohemian shops – it's just a short drive away.

The garden and terrace are the showstoppers here. This lovely villa boasts unobstructed views of the sea, which can be enjoyed from several different outside spaces – there’s something for the shade-seekers and the sun-worshippers. Inside, this home is pretty and practical, ideal for two couples or a small family. There’s not a huge amount of indoor space, but when you’re in Crete, you’re going to want to be outside as much as possible. We recommend hiring a car so you can get around easily – there are several beaches just a short drive away if you fancy a day on the sand.

A short drive from Kommos Beach and other historic landmarks, why not spend your holiday exploring southern Crete? With the beach just 250 metres away, this beautiful home makes use of natural elements and a boho touch to instil a sense of tranquillity that’s only helped along by the breathtaking sea views from the terrace. 

Embrace a slower pace by staying in bed long after you’ve woken up just so you can read another chapter. Eventually, drag yourself out towards the kitchenette where you can grab a coffee to enjoy out on the terrace. Savour the sounds and smells of the ocean as you watch the horizon from the hanging egg chair, or fill out a crossword puzzle at the outdoor dining table. The latter, coincidentally, is the perfect place for an alfresco breakfast, but you can always head out to the local cafe, just under two miles away.

Where do we start with this villa just outside Agios Pavlos? There's so much to love. Firstly it's under 250 metres from the beach – that caught our eye straight away. And then there are those immaculate views over the shimmering sea that are enough to make anyone swoon with holiday envy. The vistas over the water are absolutely stunning from sunrise to sunset, best enjoyed over long alfresco meze lunches before cooling off in the private pool or simply relaxing on the daybeds as you work on your tan.

You'll be pleased to know, too, that this home was built in harmony with the natural environment and follows the principles of bioclimatic design, so it almost has zero energy consumption. Inside, the decor is stylish and sleek with its concrete finishes and intricately carved wood panels. The hewn stone sink in the main bedroom's en-suite is a real feature too. 

With direct access to the beach, you can go for a swim in the sea, or it's 3 kilometres to the nearest taverna, café, bar and mini-market (all open from April to October).

Sometimes on holiday, you don’t want to have to plan or follow an itinerary – you just want to chill out and have everything you need to hand. This is the perfect place for that. This gorgeous villa in Crete has everything you could wish for, and some things you’ve probably not yet thought of. 

The villa is built from stone and decorated in a traditional style. Best of all, it’s in a huge plot of land with no neighbours – it’s an absolute haven of peace, quiet and relaxation. When you wake up in the morning your toughest decision will be which balcony to drink your coffee on, or possibly whether to sunbathe on a sun lounger or in a hammock. Will the children tire themselves out in the wheelchair-accessible heated pool, the playground, or playing football on the mini footy field? 

A lovely traditional stone kitchen makes cooking a breeze, but you might like to arrange for a private chef to cook for you anyway. Enjoy beautifully prepared Cretan dishes outside at the covered dining table – gluten-free meals can be provided on request. There’s also a fabulous barbecue area, so your chef could whip up a grilled feast while you and your guests sip cocktails on the terrace and admire the colourful sunsets. 

You have everything you need right at your fingertips here, but if you do fancy exploring Crete, you’re in a great location for it. Almyrida beach is just ten minutes away by car, while the attractive old town of Chania is thirty-seven minutes away. Meander along the winding streets with an ice cream, or find an alfresco table at a charming taverna by the port. When you return to the villa, settle into the Jacuzzi for a soak and see which constellations you can spot in the twinkling night sky.

This beautiful, traditional stone house on the edge of Prines, set on a gentle, west-facing slope, has wonderful mountain and sea views. Relax in the Crete sun by the private pool – we love the beautifully maintained garden with its vibrant flowers and verdant hedges. Later in the day, watch the rich sun set over the sea from the large balcony with a glass of wine. 

Inside, exposed stone, beams and arches create an atmospheric space, especially at night, and several sofas accommodate your family or friends for a good chat before dinner.

Situated in a cul-de-sac, it’s a leisurely stroll to the village centre, where there is a mini market and a choice of tavernas and cafe bars if you prefer to eat out. Or head to Rethymno, with its old Venetian harbour, 6 kilometres away. For a day at the sea, the nearest beach is 3 kilometres from this lovely villa.

This beautifully restored home is a notch above its pretty surroundings. In a beautiful stone building that dates back to 1880, it’s been restored to maintain its stunning traditional features, yet modernised to embrace the unique use of space. The open-plan dining and living space is ideal for a sociable evening enjoying a few drinks and dinner with friends. The velour corner sofa with a view extending across to the coastline is just an additional luxurious touch. Open your doors and you’re met with a second seating area, should you prefer to dine alfresco. Our favourite spot, however, is the private infinity pool where the crystal blue sea can be seen in the distance. 

Situated in the centre of Maroulas village, you’re surrounded by rich history and high above Rethymno – springs, several valleys and picturesque greenery are the natural beauty spots which beautifully complement the local taverns, cafes and mini-markets. After a day of exploring, retire for a relaxed evening at home. The bedrooms are classically calm, dressed in serene white and natural textures. In the morning, pour yourself a coffee and grab a bite to eat and head to your private balcony, where you can watch the sunrise over the horizon – another reminder you’re in holiday heaven.

Heading west from Crete’s capital, travelling along its rugged coast by the warm waters of the Gulf of Heraklion, you’ll reach the town of Lygaria. With a gorgeous beach, traditional tavernas, and a scuba diving school, you can keep entertained for days, but you might not even need to leave your villa at all.

Only 100 metres from the Lygaria Beach, you’re pretty much living on the golden sands. But your infinity pool offers another option to swimming in the sea. This fantastic raised terrace is surrounded by your alfresco dining spots, sun loungers, and a balcony up top to crown this regal outdoor space. The layout is reminiscent of an antique amphitheatre, where you can view your luxurious courtyard, as well as the main act – the azure waters.

Inside the home, built from traditional stone and sheltered by a terracotta roof, find vast spaces with rich wooden ceilings and stone archways. Wooden window frames create picture-perfect sea views, while blue and white furniture reminds you of the Greek flag as well as the nautical setting. Head up to the glass-fronted balcony, crack open the wine from your welcome hamper, and gaze out to your kingdom.

From the near-constant cloudless sky to the crystalline Aegean Sea and the shimmering private swimming pool – this place is an ode to the colour blue. Three kilometres away, you’ll find the calm shallows of the nearest sandy beach and the charming town of Chania is a short drive along the coast. Right on your doorstep (within 200 metres), you’ve got cafés, bakeries, tavernas and a mini market to stock up on supplies.

If you’re not cooling off from the Crete sun in the swimming pool, our favourite spot is the table and chairs on the covered veranda, facing a panorama of Crete’s stunning coastline. This is a great spot to dine of an evening. Inside, the home is split between two apartments, each with its own kitchen and living room. On the first floor, the living room is a grand space with marble floor, candelabra and velvety tufted sofas. Two full kitchens across the whole home mean it’s easy to cater for huge group meals and two living rooms give everyone enough space to spread out. The peace and quiet are blissful in bedrooms and each room has its own access to the terrace or a first-floor balcony.

This gorgeous glass house can be found just a short stroll from the beaches of Agii Apostoli. Alternatively, head west along the coast to the beautiful Venetian port town of Chania, a little over thirty kilometres away, before continuing on to some of the island's most stunning beaches, including Falassarna and Elafonisi – both within day-trip distance.
