Sea-facing views across Crete's rolling hills make this villa's terrace a stand-out. The covered patio, the private pool and the sunny lounge chairs provide ample opportunities to enjoy the fresh air and the scenery. Some of the elements inside are a bit flashy for our liking – particularly the boldly-printed blinds – but we do appreciate the exposed stone walls, which add a touch of authentic character to every room. And the location is perfect for exploring the island's southern stretch. While Kalamaki Beach is the nearest, we recommend a trip to Matala, a laid-back village with a sandy beach and bohemian shops – it's just a short drive away.

If waking up to blue skies and sea views is your idea of holiday heaven, this might be the villa for you. You’ll find this home perched high on a hilltop, offering unobstructed sea views alongside pretty countryside vistas. The outside space includes a covered terrace for dining, sun loungers and a lounge area, so there’s room for everyone to spread out – the villa isn’t the biggest but there’s plenty of space out in the sunshine. We recommend hiring a car so you can explore the nearby towns and beaches.

The garden and terrace are the showstoppers here. This lovely villa boasts unobstructed views of the sea, which can be enjoyed from several different outside spaces – there’s something for the shade-seekers and the sun-worshippers. Inside, this home is pretty and practical, ideal for two couples or a small family. There’s not a huge amount of indoor space, but when you’re in Crete, you’re going to want to be outside as much as possible. We recommend hiring a car so you can get around easily – there are several beaches just a short drive away if you fancy a day on the sand.

Each one has a large outdoor space with its own pool and children’s pool. Your host can also help arrange a private chef for dining in without the effort of cooking yourself, or a babysitter for a night out once the kids are in bed. Location wise, you’re surrounded by mountains and near the coast, so you’ll be able to glimpse sea views from your lounger.

With the beach just 250 metres away, this beautiful home makes use of natural elements and a boho touch to instil a sense of tranquillity that’s only helped along by the breathtaking sea views from the terrace. 

Embrace a slower pace by staying in bed long after you’ve woken up just so you can read another chapter. Eventually, drag yourself out towards the kitchenette where you can grab a coffee to enjoy out on the terrace. Savour the sounds and smells of the ocean as you watch the horizon from the hanging egg chair, or fill out a crossword puzzle at the outdoor dining table. The latter, coincidentally, is the perfect place for an alfresco breakfast, but you can always head out to the local cafe, just under two miles away.

Bask in the sun as you read on the daybed and hop into the plunge pool whenever you need a bit of cooling down. Take a walk down to the beach and enjoy the sunset together before slowly making the trip back for a night of charades in the living space.

Where do we start with this villa just outside Agios Pavlos? There's so much to love. Firstly it's under 250 metres from the beach – that caught our eye straight away. And then there are those immaculate views over the shimmering sea that are enough to make anyone swoon with holiday envy. The vistas over the water are absolutely stunning from sunrise to sunset, best enjoyed over long alfresco meze lunches before cooling off in the private pool or simply relaxing on the daybeds as you work on your tan.

You'll be pleased to know, too, that this home was built in harmony with the natural environment and follows the principles of bioclimatic design, so it almost has zero energy consumption. Inside, the decor is stylish and sleek with its concrete finishes and intricately carved wood panels. The hewn stone sink in the main bedroom's en-suite is a real feature too. 

With direct access to the beach, you can go for a swim in the sea, or it's 3 kilometres to the nearest taverna, café, bar and mini-market (all open from April to October).

Situated in a cul-de-sac, it’s a leisurely stroll to the village centre, where there is a mini market and a choice of tavernas and cafe bars if you prefer to eat out. Or head to Rethymno, with its old Venetian harbour, 6 kilometres away. For a day at the sea, the nearest beach is 3 kilometres from this lovely villa.

Hidden away among a patchwork of olive groves, scented cypress trees and shrub-like kermes oak, this hillside villa offers a welcome escape close to a beautiful stretch of the Cretan coast.

Built from carefully selected local stone and wood, the villa is very much in keeping with its surroundings and almost blends into the background from afar, despite its size. Outside, you'll find an inviting pool surrounded by sun loungers, a lovely outdoor dining area and lushly planted borders.

The interior is decorated in a traditional Cretan style that, unlike more modern designs, doesn't try to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience. Instead, you'll enjoy two distinct spaces, with the cool interior offering respite from the blazing sun outside. 

Nearby, the village of Prines has three traditional tavernas, all of which will deliver to the villa on those evenings when you really don't feel like cooking for the family. When you need to stock up on essentials, the village of Atsipopoulo has a couple of supermarkets that will cater to all your needs. Finally, the beautiful Venetian port city of Rethymno is just a fifteen-minute drive – it's well worth spending an afternoon wandering its labyrinthine backstreets and seeking out hidden restaurants and local craftspeople selling their wares.

Perched on the banks of Lake Kournas, this home has some of the most beautiful lake views, and when you’re out on the terrace at just the right angle, it might even give you the impression of floating right above the deep blue body of water.
