Life on the farm doesn't get much better than this. Set on the outskirts of Salakos village, in the lush foothills of Mount Prophitis Ilias, it's a high-end villa surrounded by rich agricultural land. Olive groves, walnut trees and nearby glasshouses producing fruit and vegetables make this a slice of rural heaven, and every morning you'll be brought fresh produce, olive oil, eggs and bread from the farm.

Away from it all but just a fifty-minute drive from Rhodes Town, here you'll be able to experience a slower pace of life. Bask on your enormous deck, find a shady spot beneath the palms in your private garden or swim and play all day in your pool. An elegant and charming home, it's been built in the traditional style with plenty of character – think vaulted ceilings, bare stone walls and plenty of natural wood. It sits perfectly in its serene surroundings. 

Our pick of the rooms has to be the main living room here. With its open layout and fabulous high ceilings, there's something quite Hollywood about it. We love the leather sofas, the sleek, black kitchen and the green-framed window walls. But there's much more to explore, with a second living space and three beautiful bedrooms. There's even a home gym if you're feeling like some exercise.

In the evenings, light the barbecue and eat outside under the stars, or head into the village (where you'll find a couple of small eateries) or to the coast at Kamiros Beach for dinner in a seaside taverna. And there's plenty to explore locally too – don't miss a visit to the butterfly valley, the seven springs and a chance to go wine tasting.

This newly built villa on the island of Patmos is a shining example of how to incorporate classic Meditteranean design motifs into modern homes. 

Inside, the white walls, terracotta tiling and bursts of exposed stonework feel instantly recognisable, as well as perfectly cooling on a hot summer's afternoon. When you want to see more of the island, the nearest beach — Melloi — is just over five minutes' drive away and goes past plenty of restaurants and cafes along the way. In the other direction, you can explore Monastery of Saint John the Theologian.

Once you've picked your villa, you can settle in and admire the high ceilings and eclectic collection of furniture. Kalavarda Beach is half a kilometre away, and is relatively quiet and popular with locals. If you get hungry, head to one of the nearby tavernas selling freshly caught seafood washed down with Greek wine. And should you fancy exploring a little further afield then the historic city of Rhodes, with its medieval old town, is just over half an hour away by car.

For true privacy and seclusion, look no further than this tucked-away villa on the island of Samos. While away days by the aqua-blue pool, or visit one of the nearby coves – accessible only by boat or foot, so you can expect zero traffic noise.

The villa itself is homely and bright, fitted will all-important home comforts, including scenic spots to dine and inviting seating where you can happily curl up with a book. Peer through flourishing olive trees from the large windows, and see how long you can resist the sea beckoning. 

Potami beach is a three-minute drive (or twenty-minute walk) away. Lay on the sandy shores and listen to the silky water lapping as the day ambles on.  Nearby, the small town of Karlovasi is a useful spot for grocery top-ups, and it's also home to a number of traditional tavernas. Fishing is popular in this community, so we suggest you sample to fresh seafood.

Drives into Chora come highly recommended, but chartering a boat may suit you better.

It’s the perfect holiday home for large groups as there are separate living areas – the studio apartment is ideal for those with a baby hoping for some space of their own. 

The interior is bright and cool, with beamed ceilings and huge windows that make it a real island retreat. Wake up in the morning to the sun streaming onto your pillow, and make your way straight out onto the terrace to stretch and breathe in the warm, sweet-scented air. 

The pool overlooks the sea, with mountain views and neighbouring islands dotted around on the horizon. There’s a sense of real tranquillity here, but you’re not far from the action. It’s just a nine-minute walk into the centre of Kampos, where you’ll find a tavern, bar and a playground. Skala, the main town, is a ten-minute drive away, so you can easily stock up on food. Kampos Beach is the most popular sandy stretch on the island, and it’s just five minutes by car from the villa. 

The magnificent Monastery of St John – a site of pilgrimage – is just fourteen minutes away. This historic spot is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is breath-takingly beautiful. After your visit, call into a taverna for a lunch of meze – this is what holidays are all about. 


Rugged Revelation

The little island of Astypalea is something of an undiscovered gem in the Aegean Sea. This villa is just outside Astypalea Town (or Chora) with a beautiful view of the white houses layered up the hillside and crowned with an ancient castle (200 metres away). The sea is a short walk, with the island’s most famous beach, Livadi, 500 metres away. 

It may be a self-catered villa, but there are plenty of luxury touches that make a stay here as easy as a hotel. The welcome hamper and fresh fruit on arrival, daily housekeeping and breakfast served every morning, for example. There’s room to sit out on the private terrace and take in the view of ancient Astypalea Town rising before you, and a Jacuzzi provides the perfect end to a day of sightseeing. 

Inside, it feels like old-world Greece with candle-lit alcoves in the sleek stone walls and a cast-iron fireplace on display in the living area. We love the faded mosaic motif paired with a vintage-style oven in the kitchen. Sheer white curtains frame the four-poster in the main bedroom and there’s a raised platform in the living room with a bed for additional guests which can just be used as a spot to recline like a Sultan during the day.  

The Phoenician Princess

Found in Astypalaia, where history and heritage collide, this home pays homage to both. Minimalist with a whitewashed Cycladic exterior, the interior is matched to create a coastal atmosphere whilst holding to tradition. Though it's small and everyone might not feel comfortable on the spiral staircase, you can catch a glimpse of the Venetian Castle of Astypalaea from the balcony. Beach lovers can drop their bags and find themselves on the shores of Livadi in a matter of minutes. The kitchen is okay for light bites, but with several restaurants around, you wouldn't need to bother if you don't want to.

Just ten minutes from Bodrum, this villa is a cosy escape close to the Turkish coast. We're big fans of both bedrooms having en-suite (albeit somewhat dated) bathrooms, although our eyes are on the main with its open-air whirlpool tub. It's also situated on one level, so it'd be a good fit for families with children or guests who struggle with stairs. Outside, the garden offers a private swimming pool ideal for afternoon dips and shady spots where you can sit back with a glass of wine and relax. Factor in the charming coastal villages and Blue Flag beaches within driving distance, and you can see why we like it.

Peacefully tucked away in a quiet spot of Bodrum in Turkey, within easy driving distance of the family-friendly beach resort of Bitez, this villa is ideal for a fun summer holiday.
