Sitting in the heart of Rethymno's old town, this home dates back to the 17th century, but we think it's got a youthful spirit. Nowhere is that more true than out in the rooftop garden, which has a heated swimming pool – albeit a smallish one – plus lots of seating and a barbecue should you feel in the mood for alfresco dining. That being said, there are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding streets if you don't fancy cooking, as well as lots of historic attractions lying within walking distance to keep you busy.

A mere 50-metre stroll from Platanes beach, this home is perfect for those keen to spend their holiday sunbathing on the sand or indulging in watersports. Beating the Crete heat is a breeze, with the nearby sea and a private pool to swim in, while the sun-kissed terrace back at the villa is just the spot for an alfresco meal. Of course you can also make an entire day of basking at the sun on any one of the beaches available to you – Rethymnon beach is only minutes away by car. 

Back home, amid the modern interior, you’re encouraged to take it easy. Put your feet up and relax with a cup of coffee. Sit out on the balcony, if you’ve taken a room on the upper levels, with a glass of wine and enjoy the fresh air. The central location does mean there's the potential for some noise, so light sleepers may want to bring earplugs. But you won't need to worry about driving – you'll be close to public transport and within walking distance of Rethymno's coastline, lighthouse, shops, and restaurants.

Situated in the centre of Maroulas village, you’re surrounded by rich history and high above Rethymno – springs, several valleys and picturesque greenery are the natural beauty spots which beautifully complement the local taverns, cafes and mini-markets. After a day of exploring, retire for a relaxed evening at home. The bedrooms are classically calm, dressed in serene white and natural textures. In the morning, pour yourself a coffee and grab a bite to eat and head to your private balcony, where you can watch the sunrise over the horizon – another reminder you’re in holiday heaven.

This home's proximity to the beach (just 250 metres away) makes it a stand-out. Private access is via pretty steep steps, and it’s shared with the villa next door, but you can't beat having the sea that close. The nearest taverna, bar and mini-market are a little further, so you'll need to hire a car or get a cab. But the views back home are stunning, and there's a pool to cool off from the sun. You can enjoy vistas from inside as one of the bedrooms opens onto the terrace. One of the more unusual design features is that the kitchen is open to the elements, but as Crete is known for its fantastic weather, that's not a problem.
