Nestled in a valley of vineyards and olive groves, this tranquil country house estate, just a ten-minute drive away from Tsilivi Beach, offers an authentic taste of Zakynthos. It is set in the historic village of Agios Kyrykos, which boasts strong ties to some of the island's best wineries. The estate itself also has an impressive wine heritage, having harvested one of the most popular grape varieties within the region for the best part of two centuries. We recommend popping by the village for a bottle of the good stuff, best enjoyed perched by the pool at sunset, glass in hand, gazing out to the fruit trees kissing the horizon.

Wander across the vast grounds – or cycle using the provided bicycles – and you'll spot vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees, and your host can even arrange tastings. A little closer to the home, you can't fail to notice the infinity swimming pool, which has both hydromassage features and a children's section. Elsewhere outside, the alfresco table and barbecue on the terrace let you enjoy lavish feasts with a rather bucolic backdrop.

Step behind the home's glass doors and you're greeted by living quarters that feel fresh and bright. Stark white walls accentuate the ample amounts of natural light that stream in through the windows, while there are a few lavish touches in the shape of the chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and the range of prettily tiled bathtubs.

Although the location is certainly rural, you don't have to venture far for a bit of life. The nearest stretch of seaside, for example, is Bouka Beach only 8km away, and the bright lights of Zakynthos Town are a similar distance away, too.

Set in Agios Kirikos, right in the heart of the island and just 7km from the coast, this newly-built abode offers seclusion, tranquillity, and some serious modern luxury to boot – starting with that hydromassage infinity pool and professional tennis court. 

From the moment you arrive, you can tell an architect has been working their wizardry here. Vast walls of glass reveal far-reaching views of ancient groves and mountains beyond seen from the open-plan, double-height living space. And elsewhere, you'll find three serene bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms all spaced apart to offer guests that extra privacy.

While away your days hopping between that infinity pool and jacuzzi or change up the pace with a game of tennis on the shared professional court or table tennis. And when the sea finally beckons, head for the north coast beaches – the long sandy beach of Kalamaki (12km drive) protected by the National Marine Park gets our vote.

When thoughts turn to food, get together for sunset alfresco barbecues – the estate's wine and olive oil produce are the perfect accompaniments. Or, hop in the car for an evening dining at the local tavernas of Agios Kirikos (a three-minute drive) or, for something a little buzzier, Zante Town (8km drive).

There are plenty of traditional touches throughout the house, from the original paintings to the terracotta tiles and wrought-iron staircase. The interior is cool and calm – it's the perfect place to flop down with a book – while the outdoor space has plenty to keep you busy. Practice your serve on the tennis court, challenge your guests to a ping-pong match, or hop on one of the bicycles provided and explore the grounds. When the temperature rises you can make a splash in the pool, and your host can even arrange tastings of the olive oil and wine produced in the surrounding countryside. 

You could easily spend an eternity here, but if you fancy heading out and about then there's plenty to love about the local region. The sandy shoreline of Psarou Beach is just fifteen minutes away, where you can catch some rays and swim in the crystal clear water. And, with Zante Town the same distance away, there are several bars, restaurants, and boutiques to visit.

For those who appreciate traditional charm, and who want to stay in a more authentic village setting, this comfortable home is spacious, stone-clad and ever-so private. Surrounded by olive groves and farmland, it's tucked away in the village of Vanato and feels far from the busy resorts – yet it's just 3km from Zakynthos Town and the long sandy beaches of Tsilivi. 

All arranged on the ground floor, this place is full of character – we love the fireplace, the vaulted timber ceilings and the numerous patio doors that allow most of the rooms to open out to the garden. There's a modern, fully kitted-out kitchen, a built-in barbecue outside and tables both indoors and out. And the master bedroom is a real treat, with its vast space easily fitting not one but two king-size beds pushed together for the ultimate luxury. Step outside and your flat lawns are perfect for kids to play on, with a private pool, sun loungers and plenty of privacy thanks to walls and screen hedges.

Stylish and spacious, this home is ideal for large groups. It’s in a peaceful setting close to Zakynthos Town, yet is tucked away amid vineyards so feels a million miles from the hustle and bustle. The outside space is centred around the seasonally-heated pool, with comfortable loungers around it and plenty of room for gathering together with pre-dinner cocktails – the fire pit is perfect. There’s an open-air spa for relaxing, and children can tire themselves out in their own play area. You’ll need a car to get around, but the beaches are only a short drive away.
