This sixth-floor loft apartment does things differently. There’s no TV for starters, and the bedrooms are comfortable, yet not breathtaking. So what caught our discerning eye? Step out onto the 200sq/metre rooftop terrace, overlooking picturesque Rome and all of your questions will be answered. The decked terrace comes with a veranda cover, plenty of sofa seating and a table for alfresco dining – we can think of nothing better than warmer evenings spent out here with friends and family, eating, drinking and laughing as the sun goes down. While there's certainly a Roman rustic charm to the home, with its wooden floorboards and low beamed ceilings, the modern details really bring the living room and kitchen to life. Light pours in through the sleek crittall windows, extending the space out to the terrace and creating a bright and airy kitchen-diner area – the modern breakfast bar is the perfect spot to sip your morning espresso. When – all caffeinated and ready to explore – you do eventually peel yourself away from that beautiful terrace, the home's location is ideal for discovering the city's ancient sights. Walk to the Colosseum in twenty minutes and visit the Roman Forum, under three kilometres from home. Termini train station is also a twenty-minute stroll away, connecting you to the rest of the city in no time at all. While a wander through the immediate neighbourhood will have you passing plenty of pastry shops, traditional trattorias and cocktail bars – with so much to see and do, you'll be spoilt for choice.

That said, it can sleep up to four guests – but two will draw the short straw and be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room. In a fifteen-minute stroll, you can reach the Basilica of St. John Lateran and the Scala Santa, and in a thirty-minute escapade, you'll find yourself at the steps of the Roman Forum, or in the shadow of the Colosseum.

Those visiting Rome for the ancient marvels and historic sights won't find a location much better than this. It’s 100 metres from the Colosseum and the ruin-filled park of Colle Opio is your next-door neighbour. The apartment is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, and stepping inside you feel the opulence of an old-world parlour. Velvet seats at the bistro table, a velvet sofa piled high with cushions and suspended candelabra create the opulence, while the exposed stone and timber beams keep one foot firmly in the building’s history. Chess can provide the evening’s entertainment, which feels fitting amidst the gilded mirrors and oil paintings. Heading up the striking mesh-metal staircase, the master bedroom has a pretty arched window with a window seat providing the perfect spot for a bit of holiday reading.

This beautiful penthouse apartment is just the ticket for those looking for a relaxing stay away from the tourist crowds. Located in Rome’s Sallustiano neighbourhood, you’re far enough away from the city’s heavily crowded areas while still being able to reach all the main sights on foot or by public transport. Inside, a neutral palette sets a calming scene with wood floors and pops of blue in the pared-back decor. You’ll immediately be struck by the dazzling amount of natural light in the living area, thanks to the large glass doors that open up onto the first of two terraces. This first one – off of the living room – is a whopping 538 square feet and boasts several tables and chairs, a covered seating area as well as an outdoor shower to enjoy. This is the ideal spot to congregate at sundown over aperitifs and alfresco meals, while the second terrace – up the flight of stairs in the living room – is a rooftop haven with its sun chairs and equally majestic rooftop vistas, ideal for catching those Italian afternoon rays. Back inside, the two bedrooms are simple yet elegant, offering dreamy canvases for a blissful night’s sleep. When you’re ready to head out and explore, make a beeline for Villa Borghese (a ten-minute walk) or stroll just twenty minutes to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. With plenty of pizzerias and traditional, family-friendly trattorias along Via Flavia (a one-minute walk), as well as a plethora of shops and historic buildings on your doorstep, you’ve got everything you need for a glorious Roman holiday.

Step into the Art Nouveau sunroom of this period apartment and just soak up its vintage style and warm character. Surrounded by extraordinary windows – some frosted for privacy, others with stained glass – along with huge houseplants and antique furnishings, it's a striking space. Read on the sofa or linger over coffee at the dining table in the morning light. Overlooking a lush garden, it's certainly the highlight of the home. But there's plenty more to love about this place. Small, but perfectly functional, the kitchen leads to a hallway and a snug TV room with its own dining table. The pretty master bedroom is beautifully decorated, with plenty of storage and a desk, while the ensuite second bedroom has its own desk and a fabulous tiled floor. There's even the option of adding a cot if you're travelling as a family. With such easy access around the city from this spot, you'll be surprised how peaceful and quiet it is – yet it's surrounded by excellent shops and restaurants and it's just a fifteen-minute walk from the Colosseum.

Brilliantly situated in Monti, one of Rome's most ancient neighbourhoods, this top-floor apartment is truly something special. There's no question that the private terrace is the crown jewel of the place. With a charming bistro table and an abundance of sunshine, it's the perfect spot to start the morning with an espresso and a pastry – and of course, end the evening with a bottle of Italian wine as the world passes by below you. 

Elsewhere, you'll find two quaint Juliet balconies – not ideal for sitting, but the view of the bustling street below is as Roman as it gets. The rest of the apartment is filled with light, packed with character and super stylish. Curl up on the cream-coloured sofa and watch a flick on Netflix, rustle up homecooked pasta in the kitchen and work from home at the desk in the second bedroom. There's more than enough space here to spread out and make yourself at home.

And the options for exploring are endless. The forum and the Colosseum are less than a ten-minute walk away – and there's plenty more sightseeing where that came from. Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is also within walking distance and two metro lines are nearby for when you fancy visiting landmarks further into the city. Or just stay local and wine and dine the night away at the restaurants, cafes and bars on your doorstep, including a delicious gelateria right downstairs for some quintessentially Italian gelato.

This apartment may be in the heart of Rome, but there’s something distinctly country-chic about the decor. Period pieces – dressers, doors and the kitchen table – are all rough white-washed and feel rustic. The sound system is vintage, and the armchairs in the living room are upholstered in gloriously kitsch floral patterns. The jewel in the crown of the apartment is the sprawling outdoor terrace, which has sofas in sunny spots for a dose of vitamin D, and shaded nooks under parasols for when the heat gets too much. The bamboo pergola covered a couple of outdoor gas hobs, so you can cook and dine alfresco. Flowers and pot plants bloom for every corner and climb trellises for a bit of privacy. If you want to know just how central you are, just head out to the downstairs balcony and spot the Colosseum at the end of your street.

For the location, you're surrounded by local authenticity and just a seven-minute walk to the emblematic Colosseum. Find an assortment of eateries, wine bars and classy cafés to enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sun, before working off any over-indulgences with a gentle fourteen-minute stroll to Trevi Fountain – pennies at the ready. We also have to mention the apartment being on the cusp of Monti and Campitelli – both are full of beautiful piazzas, windy backstreets and family-run trattorias. Back home, we think there's somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel, with plain bedspreads, pared-back furnishings and white shelved walls. Modern and minimalist, you'll also notice the elegant marble floors, quirky wallpaper prints and low-hanging light bulbs that we really loved.

This stylish apartment is right around the corner from Termini, Rome's biggest train station, so there's no doubt that the transport links are excellent. But many of the must-see sights can also be reached on foot, including the magnificent Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore five minutes away and The Colosseum just a little further, about a twenty-minute stroll. After fueling up on pasta and gelato at Mercato Centrale Roma across the street, set off for the Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon and The Spanish Steps, all reachable in under half an hour. When you're not off exploring, shopping or sipping Italian wine at one of the bars in this area, rest your tired feet back at home. We love the bold green colours and funky design – picture cowhide rugs, vibrant pop art and leafy wallpaper in the bedroom. The bathroom is also one of our favourites – it has a huge walk-in rain shower that's the perfect way to relax after a busy day. And this pad has more than enough room for two, so there's plenty of space to make yourself at home. In the evenings, pour yourself an aperitif and rustle up a feast in the contemporary kitchen, then end the night with Netflix in bed, nodding off while to the sound of your favourite shows.

Despite its position in an old, atmospheric square near Campo de’ Fiori, Falconry has been renovated recently, and most of the furniture has been made to measure, making the whole place feel very well crafted. Everything fits together, from the parquet floor to the various lamps, and even the terrace is taken care of, and not an afterthought. High up among the rooftops, it feels like a little refuge from the hectic city below.

Want to be a short walk away from one of Rome's most famous landmarks? Then this apartment in Monti is spot-on. It's a stone's throw from the Colosseum and right around the corner from Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore. Shops, restaurants, and metro stations are also nearby. Back home, the blue and yellow colour scheme is instantly cheery. Your host has taken care of all the essentials, including a desk ideal for remote working. Two guests will sleep on the sofa bed (which may be a squeeze for everyone), but otherwise, it's a fantastic space to call home.

Among streets peppered with restaurants and book shops on one corner, and ancient ruins on the next, Rome’s Castro Pretorio district is a melting pot of history and culture. You can find basilicas, palazzos, and even the Teatro dell'Opera all less than 600 metres from your front door on the famed Via Cavour. Just like its locale, your apartment is full of original character and style.

Set on the first floor of a traditional block, the views from the French windows and private balcony offer a fantastic display of the local lifestyle. You can spot the honey and pink tones of nearby Italian architecture, as mopeds whizz by on the streets and people chat at kerbside cafés (all while you sip prosecco on the outdoor seating).

Ask any Roman and they'll tell you how the Lateranense Palace isn’t as famous as the neighbouring Dome of St. Peter’s, but when you see it from a vantage point like this, it’s hard to say exactly why that is. It’s visible from the living room, balcony and one of the bedrooms, tying the whole apartment together in its grandeur and elegance. Plus you're only a fifteen-minute walk from one of the seven wonders of the world – the Colosseum. Inside, the home is bright and roomy, with a stylish navy sofa, gold accents, tasteful artwork and plenty of light reads that makes for a calming spot to unwind with a good book and a limoncello. With high ceilings, tonnes of space and beautiful floors (both stone and parquet), Centurion Rose eschews flamboyance for a more elegant, sober aesthetic. The flat isn’t particularly bright – Via Palermo outside is narrow, and has high buildings – but there’s enough light to get by, and the street is beautiful enough that we’ll forgive it. Everything, from the kitchen chairs, to the curtains, to the rainfall shower, is high quality and it all makes sense – functionality isn’t an afterthought.

Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight (and ten, at a stretch) in the Jewish Quarter isn’t as straightforward as you might think. Finding somewhere that can comfortably sleep eight and has a view as good as Teatro’s is even harder. It looks down onto the Largo di Torre Argentina, which holds the ruins of four temples and Pompey’s Theatre. It’s a fantastic spot, and Teatro makes the most of it, with a simple design intended to not interfere.

Step off a leafy Esquilino street and through the huge old doors to find this fourth-floor apartment in all of its whitewashed glory. Pristine and modern, the home is touched with earthy tones—olive and celery greens, taupe and leafy houseplants. All of your mod-cons are neatly concealed by a veneer of light oak, so you can keep your attention firmly on devouring the welcome wine and snacks provided by your host. Turn right out of your building and take the ten-minute waltz over to Parco del Colle Oppio for its ancient ruins and prime views of the mighty Colosseum. Finding a street close to it all but not inundated with tourists is the holy grail in Rome – and that's precisely where you'll find this apartment. We call it the Goldilocks zone. But, ever the professional, your host Michele hasn’t used that as an excuse to rest on his laurels. The flat itself is in perfect condition, and while it doesn’t have the feeling of a family home, that’s often a good thing when it's not a sprawling home with space for all the host's personal items. The two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the flat, which is perfect for groups of friends travelling together, though families might want little ones closer by, or not. We understand. Sandwiched between the river and lively Campo de' Fiori, you're in a prime location to explore the city. The square is home to the city's most vibrant (and occasionally overpriced) street market (Monday-Saturday mornings). Still, this famous foodie haven is a good place to stock up on fresh produce, just a five-minute walk from your apartment. Cross over the stone footbridge, Ponte Sisto, and within a couple of minutes, you'll be immersed in trendy Trastevere. With its cobbled streets lined with charmingly faded facades, innovative trattorias, and craft cocktail bars, there's plenty to keep you occupied well into the night.

Deep within the narrow, medieval streets of Rome, this period building hides a surprisingly modern apartment for up to five guests. It's not a huge space but it's been cleverly configured to make the most of what it has – and to make it feel comfortable and high-end at the same time. Decorated in on-trend whites, creams and greys, it's bright and fresh. The kitchenette is stowed away in a cupboard-like space in the living room and while it's perfect for the basics, it's not going to appeal to keen home cooks – but this is Rome, and some of the best restaurants, cafes and bars in the world are right on your doorstep. Our favourite feature of this home is the view onto the charming Piazza dei Satiri outside. And while we're talking location, the famous Campo de’ Fiori market is just around the corner.


Pan's Place

The location of this apartment is great – it's just a short walk away from the iconic Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Another highlight is the private garden oasis – the perfect spot to relax or cook at the barbeque. Inside, there’s an open-plan living space with a sofa bed for guests five and six. And with the hot Roman summers, you’ll be glad to know this home has air conditioning. This place is a fantastic choice for friends and families looking to be within the heart of the Eternal City.

A Roman Romance

You know what they say – location is everything. Well, if that's true, you can't do much better than Monti. Some of Rome's most famous sights are only ten minutes away on foot – The Colosseum and The Forums – yet this neighbourhood is anything but a tourist trap. There's an authentic atmosphere in this part of town, with plenty of traditional eateries, vintage stores and chic wine bars loved by locals. It's also pretty quiet, all things considered. You'll find this apartment on a pretty street, only a few steps from Parco del Colle Oppio. With a bright living area, stylish bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms, this home is a calm place to escape the hustle and bustle. Pour yourself a glass of Italy's finest wine and relax on the sofa or around the glass dining table. If you're in the mood to rustle up a meal, the compact kitchen has plenty of dishes and culinary gear, though it's on the smaller side. There's even a desk in the second bedroom if you need to check work emails, but if it were up to us, we'd spend every day sipping espresso in one of the cafes, basking in the magic of Rome.

What a great location this lovely home has – it's just a six-minute stroll from Emperor Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea), while the Colosseum is eight minutes on foot and the Roman Forum is ten.

Back at this apartment, housed in a 19th-century building, there's a wonderful terrace with a comfy sofa, which is just what you need after a day exploring the Eternal City. There's a dining table here too, perfect for alfresco suppers of cacio e pepe (a Roman staple of pasta, pepper and cheese). Inside, we love that there's a lot of natural light, which helps the trendy Sansevieria plants to thrive. Mix up a Campari in the modern kitchen and relax on the plush purple sofa – bliss.
