The owner–architect and his partner wanted to offer an exciting alternative to ordinary holiday accommodation, and what they’ve achieved is exactly that. With the couple’s love of art and design at its core, you can tell that everything – right down to those tiny, finer details – has been carefully cherry–picked. From the corrugated, art–deco kettle to the stylish floating desk space, no effort has been spared here – and the Mediterannean and Nordic influences are clear to see.

The neutral colour scheme keeps things light and bright, meanwhile the medley of natural oak features warm everything up. We love the fusion of classic and contemporary. Chris and his wife, Hanna, hand–selected a bunch of designer, bespoke and vintage pieces to create a modern setup galvanised by retro accents peppered from here to there. The end result? A practical yet elegant studio that’s sure to make your experience of Malta magical.

If you don’t feel like leaving your private haven, we don’t blame you, but as everything is all within easy reach, an amble around the enchanting alleys is a must. Prepare to get lost in its many steps and be sure to take a moment to admire the detailed architecture.

An eye-catching one-bedroom apartment on the main floor of a 17th-century townhouse. This central Valletta gem is equipped for the art lovers out there. Adorned with vibrant neon lights and striking local artwork hung on rough plaster walls, this home is sure to appeal to anyone who loves a pop of colour to appear within their holiday property.

Even the furniture is set to stun, with elegant mid-century-inspired pieces deliberately placed throughout. The standout piece, however, has to be the Aarnio-style Bubble Chair suspended from the ceiling – its transparent shell makes it the ideal spot to curl up with a book while benefitting from the natural light streaming in from the large windows.

With a compact kitchenette hidden behind the Tron-style artwork, you might want to head out for dinner. There's an almost infinite choice of eateries on your doorstep, with no fewer than three Michelin-starred restaurants within easy walking distance, plus any number of more casual local favourites.

When you're not strolling around in search of food, the compact centre of Valletta is well worth your time. The city has retained its 16th-century charm over the intervening years and houses plenty of museums, buzzing bars, entertaining theatres and even a new parliament building within its impressive bastion walls.

Curated by its owner-architect, this designer apartment in Valetta is chock full of bespoke and vintage pieces sourced from local workshops and markets. It sits in a building over 100 years old, within Valetta’s shambling old streets packed with restaurants and sultry bars. Head to the old harbourfront where colourful wooden boats bob in the water for a cocktail at sunset.

Concrete and terrazzo floors in dove-grey and smooth cement walls give an industrial edge to this apartment and pops of colour come courtesy of towering pot plants and vibrant modern art. The 1960s-style curved kitchenette has everything you need to whip up a quick breakfast and French double doors open up to a slender little balcony overlooking the street. The bathroom is particularly sumptuous in marble and with a free-standing soaking tub in the centre. A wall of French windows bathes this place in natural light. Come sundown, head up to the shared rooftop terrace for a cold drink and watch the sky tinged pink and purple over the sea.

It’s not often you find a renovation that has managed to restore original glory while adding modern touches tastefully - but this 1930s Maltese townhouse in Sliema has managed to achieve a perfect balance between original features and exciting gadgets. It’s particularly good for those with teens – or even other halves that can’t be parted from their tech-comforts – as there’s a media room with projector, 2m screen, Netflix and XBox; separate Smart TV and three Amazon Echos. But those who come on holiday just to get away from tech are acknowledged too - pull up a chair in the reading nook, seek out the private courtyard garden (complete with its own lemon tree) or bask on the roof terrace and feel the years melt away to a simpler time. If you can drag yourselves out, you’ll find the Sliema promenade, gardens and beach just 150 metres away. Bribe the kids away from those giant screens with the great playground, Italian ice cream shop and fantastic lido.

Found close to the northern coastline of the island of Gozo, this home constructed from the island's distinctive honey-coloured stone is somewhere where you can well and truly embrace the slower pace of life.

Summer afternoons can be passed in the swimming pool surrounded by palm trees and loungers or up on the upper-floor terrace complete with a dreamy view of the Maltese countryside. When guests ever get a bit peckish, all you have to do is fire up the brick barbecue and serve up some smoky flavours on the alfresco dining table.

There's plenty to like about what lies inside the home's four walls, which are lined with large grid windows that bathe the space with copious amounts of natural light. The design leans toward the rustic side, with wooden beams, exposed stonework and cool tiled flooring. Fans of indulgent soaks will also appreciate the fact that there are three bathtubs in which to lie back and relax.

Although you can easily have a lovely time without leaving the address, you'll find plenty of distractions in the local area, too. The red sands of Ramla beach take twenty minutes to reach on foot, while Ġgantija temples – thought to have been built in 3600BC – are just over five minutes' drive away.

Situated at a vantage point overlooking panoramic scenes of Modica, when you walk out onto the balcony and witness magnificent views of the light forming over the town, you'll be sure to feel energised for the day ahead. That's important as there's a lot to do and see in this stunning region of Sicily. 

Modica itself is a Unesco town with years of history to explore. Wander its wonderful streets and make sure to indulge in lots of chocolate here – the town has a 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate making. We recommend checking out the centrepiece of the town, the Duomo di San Giorgio, which is one of the most spectacular sights of Baroque architecture in Sicily. But if days walking around is too much, then why not spend a day at one of the fine beaches in this area? Sampieri is one of the most famous and it's only a twenty-eight-minute drive. No matter what you choose to do during the day, we guarantee you'll end up spending your evenings on this home's balcony watching the lights of Modica twinkle at night while sipping on a glass of something tasty. Magical.

This architect-renovated home in the centre of Modica is a real find. Sitting behind gates, we were intrigued to see what lay behind. The house is constructed of warm local stone, which contrasts beautifully with the grey paintwork. There are multiple terraces, balconies and courtyards to enjoy – our favourite is the terrace with a lemon tree as its focal point – it's the perfect spot for an alfresco supper. Some of the rooms offer beautiful views of Modica, and there's an exercise room if you fancy clocking up some miles on the treadmill.

Or you could take a stroll around this stunning city with its Baroque buildings, like the Cathedral of St. George. There are restaurants and shops on your doorstep, or if you fancy a day at the beach, the golden sands of the Marina di Modica beach are 15 kilometres away.

There's a reason many people consider Sicily to be a magical place to visit, and it's homes like this that show you why. Immerse yourself in an Italian paradise at this wonderful villa in the San Lorenzo area of the island. The swimming pool is the focal point of the home here. Whether you're putting on a breakfast pastry spread for the family to dive into on the terrace, or barbequing vegetables in the outside cooking area, you'll love gazing at the pool's turquoise water. We especially like the idea of picking up some local Sicilian cherries and enjoying them in the garden with a view. Life moves slowly here, and that's exactly how we like it! 

The home itself is a mirror of beauty to the turquoise water outside of it. Modern in design and flawless in execution, you'll have a hard time tearing yourself away from this plush pad. But considering the gems waiting to be discovered in Sicily, you're going to have to at times. Why not make the six-minute drive to Marzamemi to explore a picturesque fishing village, or visit one of the area's most beautiful beaches, San Lorenzo? It's only a fifteen-minute walk. Donning the classic whites and blues of a beach house, this villa in San Lorenzo is a mere three minute stroll away from one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, but it has way more to offer than just that. The picture of modern comfort, this home encourages morning lie-ins and refreshing rain showers, first-sip-of-your-coffee moments and alfresco dining, but most importantly it forces the connection between human and nature with a very magnetising outdoor area. The moment you step out onto the patio and see the breathtaking, panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, you’ll not be able to comprehend how it can get any better, but just wait until you take the stairs up onto the sun terrace. From here, coincidentally, you can also hop in the jacuzzi, so our recommendation would be to do just that, with a glass of prosecco in hand, of course, so you watch the sun dip behind the horizon at dusk. 

With a few wineries in the surrounding area, why not go on a tour – you’ll get to each of them in ten minutes or less – and bring back a few of your favourites to enjoy with the Mediterranean feast you’ll prepare on the barbecue? Of course you’ll escape to the beach as often as possible, but the lively fishing village of Marzamemi is utterly charming and reachable by car in eight minutes.

We don’t think there’s a better way to experience the ancient feel of Modica than with a stay at a historic stone home dating back to the 1500s. This home delivers that, along with a few 21st-century touches to keep things feeling luxurious. It’s in the heart of the city, where the narrow streets are home to chi-chi coffee shops and family-run restaurants serving Sicilian cuisine. You’ve even got a view of the ancient church next door from the terraced garden.

Set over stone terraces and patios, the garden is filled with verdant plants and cacti, and feels like a little oasis in the centre of town. Seats and sofas are shaded by olive trees, and there’s dining for the group by strings of fairylights. Then there’s the circular stone hot tub, shimmering like a jewel. 

Inside, it feels like an ode to Sicilian tradition, with pristine white walls and minimalist furniture. The living room is adorned with modern art and has a selection of books for some downtime, and the kitchen is all sleek modernity despite being tucked behind an old stone archway. The old water cistern has been transformed into a wine cellar, with a high-end selection of local Sicilian bottles. Then there are the bedrooms, each with their own old-world character like the traditional circular bed in the master and fireplace in the second.

Sitting on the shores of Lido di Noto, this contemporary sanctuary opens its doors to a refreshing coastal stay. From here, it’s just 30 metres to the nearest (small) beach, while Scogliera Bianca is just 200 metres away. You can also spend lazy days relaxing in the garden and swimming in the private pool. Inside, the rooms are simple, minimal and family-friendly with children’s amenities available on request. It’s worth noting most of the rooms are accessed from the outside. Plus, the first-floor apartment is accessed via external stairs and also includes a small kitchen – making this a great option for groups looking to stretch out and spend quality time together.

It really is a wonderful space the whole family will find joy in.
