Sitting close to the coastline on one of the approximately 24,000 islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, this address benefits from not only a private dock, but also a motor boat you can borrow to explore your surroundings a little further. Alternatively, if you're more than content to sit and admire it from afar, there are alfresco tables in the pretty garden from which to dine and gaze out at peaceful waters.

This being Scandinavia, there are certain points in the year in which you'll simply want to coop up inside and it's more than possible to get toasty and warm here. Not only are there wood-burning fireplaces dotted about the communal spaces, but there's also one in the spa-style bathroom, complete with a tub and relaxation area. We're also particularly fond of the homely design throughout, from the rustic kitchens and bright living spaces to the soft rugs underfoot.

Part of the beauty of this address is its sense of isolation and privacy, although this does mean you'll have to hop in the car and potentially on a ferry for restaurants and attractions. That being said, the host can arrange for a private chef to visit the home, which makes life easier somewhat.

Set in the leafy suburbs of Stockholm, this home offers perfect peace while still being within easy reach of the city. Open the door of this handsome wooden house and you'll find yourself in a bright space that's bursting with that quintessentially Scandi style. Despite its minimalism, there are still plenty of cosy touches, from the movie room, ideal for snuggling up with a blockbuster, to the wood-burning stove which provides a warming atmosphere as you share a meal at the long dining table. If you're keen to discover further afield, the more built-up town of Sotkamo can be found just a 7-kilometre drive away, and the main city of Kajaani is also reachable by car in thirty-five minutes.

It combines all the best bits of a cabin – instant cosiness factor, natural wood paneling, a reading nook with a working fireplace for finishing those holiday reads – while still feeling modern thanks to that enviable ceiling height and double-height windows, which frame those gorgeous views. Days not spent lounging about could consist of foraging among the beautiful flora that surrounds the house, seeking out the Salpa Line, or visiting nearby sites like Kerimäki, the largest wooden church in the world. The double bedroom also gets a fantastic view of the natural surrounding area.

Head out for a drive to the nearby scenic points such as Uimaranta lake where you can sit with your loved ones and enjoy a homemade picnic before taking a light dip in the water. Sotkamo is a short drive away where you'll find the tiny yet charming Satama Cafe by the waterside as well as a great selection of eateries. If you find yourself staying here during the winter months, head to the Vuokatti slopes for some fantastic skiing opportunities.

With its jolly red façade, white trim, and all covered in snow you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d just pulled up to Santa’s Finnish hideaway when you arrive at this lodge near Sotkamo. It’s just a 5-minute drive from Vuokatti, where you’ll find coffee shops, pubs, restaurants, and an amusement park – this is also your closest spot for local skiing. Back at home and you’ll be glad of this cottage’s cosy atmosphere – not to mention the electric sauna which is sure to help ease any aching muscles from a day on the slopes. The home is decorated in a traditional style, and feels bright, modern, and welcoming. There’s a large sectional sofa in the living area that’s made all the more comfortable by the traditional woodburning stove nearby, making it the perfect place to curl up with a good book.
