Sitting close to the coastline on one of the approximately 24,000 islands in the Stockholm Archipelago, this address benefits from not only a private dock, but also a motor boat you can borrow to explore your surroundings a little further. Alternatively, if you're more than content to sit and admire it from afar, there are alfresco tables in the pretty garden from which to dine and gaze out at peaceful waters.

This being Scandinavia, there are certain points in the year in which you'll simply want to coop up inside and it's more than possible to get toasty and warm here. Not only are there wood-burning fireplaces dotted about the communal spaces, but there's also one in the spa-style bathroom, complete with a tub and relaxation area. We're also particularly fond of the homely design throughout, from the rustic kitchens and bright living spaces to the soft rugs underfoot.

Part of the beauty of this address is its sense of isolation and privacy, although this does mean you'll have to hop in the car and potentially on a ferry for restaurants and attractions. That being said, the host can arrange for a private chef to visit the home, which makes life easier somewhat.

Open the door of this handsome wooden house and you'll find yourself in a bright space that's bursting with that quintessentially Scandi style. Despite its minimalism, there are still plenty of cosy touches, from the movie room, ideal for snuggling up with a blockbuster, to the wood-burning stove which provides a warming atmosphere as you share a meal at the long dining table. Outside, there's plenty of space to enjoy alfresco feasts cooked on the grill, and even your very own swimming pool – take a refreshing dip, or simply laze in the sun as you watch the kids splash about. There's also a tennis court and golf course close by, and a five-minute walk will bring you down to the nearby lake. This corner of paradise might make you forget that you're so close to the bright lights of Stockholm but, should you want to visit the cobbled streets of the old town, you can drive there in around fifteen minutes.

This charming home offers the quintessential log cabin experience. Blanketed in snow for much of the year, it’s in a peaceful location, surrounded by ancient, evergreen forest. Sitting out on the deck you might spot woodpeckers and squirrels. Inside, you’ll find timbered walls, a welcoming living space centred around the wood burner and a traditional Finnish sauna that we could happily hunker down in for days. 

When you’re ready to explore, there’s plenty to enjoy outside too. You’re just 500m from Pyhä-Luosto National Park, with the main Luosto ski slopes 8km away; when conditions are good, the nearest ski track begins just 50m from the house. Spend your days carving up the powder, before coming back to your cosy cabin for a sauna or a hot chocolate by the roaring fire.

This Kittilä cabin is the epitome of wilderness chic. Made up almost entirely of logs, you’ll find fur-lined seats next to an exposed stone fireplace in the living room. Warm up around the fire, pull up a chair and read by the window, or treat yourself to time alone in the private sauna. If you're here for the skiing, it's practically on your doorstep, and there's lockable ski storage outside. Visit in the summer for a very different view, with lush green hills perfect for hiking.

When we say we want to escape to a log cabin in the woods, this is exactly what we have in mind. A meditative forest setting, a sauna for post-hike relaxation, and comfortable rooms that offer breathing space while also being geared for socialising (should your family and friends be enticed into joining you). With four good-sized bedrooms on offer, there’s certainly room for everyone, including in the central hub of the house – that gorgeous lounge. Yes, there’s a TV and a generous L-shaped sofa (the best kind), but we're more interested in what's going on outside those double-height windows. Venture beyond your veranda and you'll be met with the serene beauty of Lake Pielinen, the secluded shores of Purnuniemi beach, and an illuminated ski trail for ramping up the adventure level. After a day of forest bathing among stunning spruce and pine-covered terrain, fire up the grill and feel the stresses of modern life melt away.

Woodland Dreams

Made of ancient silver logs, this home emerges from between the quiet trees of the forest landscape as if it’s always stood there. In a peaceful part of the area close to the Swedish border, it’s in a great position for exploring the quieter town of Yllasjarvi, or the livelier resort of Iso-Ylläs. This cabin is ideal for a group of friends or families holidaying together. It’s all functional comfort and welcoming warmth, the multiple fireplaces adding extra snugness in the social spaces. There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards.

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus.

There’s a quiet beauty about Finland’s archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The largest collection of islands in the world (there are more than 20,000), a stay here guarantees an unhurried lifestyle by the lapping waves. And you’ll certainly get the chance to relax and recharge at this cute lakeside cabin in Kasnäs. Set right at the water’s edge with its own jetty, this home looks rustic and simple (bar the distinctive slick of red paint) from the outside. But inside you’ll find a contemporary space that looks more like it’s jumped out of the pages of an interior design magazine. We love the soft grey walls, the wood-and-metal furniture, the lush houseplants and bold geometric print soft furnishings. The open-plan living/dining space is particularly calming; it's flooded with light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, which also give you wonderful views across the lake. Outside you’re lucky enough to have access to your own waterfront terrace, a semi-private beach, a shared barbecue pit and a sauna right by the lake. Here you only need concern yourself with the simple things. Where to go for dinner, what time to go for a swim and what drink to pour when six o'clock rolls around. Bliss.

We love the rusticness of this home, and the sauna is a welcome little piece of luxury. Hunker down among blankets and cushions with the kids to plan the next day’s activities and don’t forget to take a peek outside before bed – the northern lights might be shining in the night sky.

A stone’s throw away from the rocky beaches of Kemiönsaari, this snug home is perfect for a couple or small family. Start your day on the wooded private porch and just breathe in the crisp air, before walking to the lakeside for a day of fun in southern Finland. Kasnäs harbour is a short walk with its boats for rent, ferries across the sea, and grocery shop for supplies. Inside the home you have every modern comfort (think Netflix and wifi). The home is part of a larger complex where you can use the communal sauna and lounge, as well as the shared barbecue area surrounded by trees. In the evening, sit by the fire pit and swap stories, or head indoors where comfortable furnishings, a sleek kitchen, and a chic blue and grey colour palette makes for a stylish holiday abode. 

Lake Escape

This picture-perfect lakeside cabin is ideal for families looking for an active holiday. The sweet, dollhouse-like interior feels as though it should smell of freshly baked pie – it’s warm and wholesome with traditional touches yet fully updated with modern features and all the home comforts that make for an idyllic lakeside hideaway. Wood-panelled walls and charming wallpaper give each room an inviting feel while underfloor heating ensures feet will stay toasty during the cold winter months. You’ll be just steps away from the beautiful Lake Isojärvi where you can enjoy free access to the boat for peaceful days spent on the water, and the private sauna is the perfect place to end the day, especially if you plan to make good use of the nearby eighteen-kilometre Isojärvi recreation trail. In the southernmost fell in Finland, you will find this simple, cabin-like dwelling. The apartment is in a semi-detached house, offering you all the privacy of a home. The humble interiors are bright and wood-panelled, for a cosy time in the woods. Outside, there is a covered terrace and grilling hut for prepping fresh meals while you listen to birds whistle or watch the snow falling. The home is not far from the slopes; the freshly groomed trails of Pikku-Syöte await. In the summer, explore the endless green expanse of Syöte National Park, plentiful berries, and midnight sun over the stunning nearby lakes. Last but certainly not least, the home has its own sauna, for a true Finnish experience after a day in the wilderness.

Surrounded by lush Finnish forests, at the foot of nearby ski trails, and facing the stunning Lake Talvijärvi, it's got outdoor activities for every day of the week – no matter the season. Wood and stone accents and a neutral colour palette give this home a rustic cabin-like feel that blends perfectly with the great outdoors. A comfortable base, with everything you could need, we love the private terrace and the traditional fireplace. After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the electric sauna before settling down for a movie night. If you'd prefer to get out and about, head into Ruka. One of the largest ski resorts in the country, it's got dozens of shops and restaurants to explore. In the winter it's all about skiing but visit in the summer for hiking, kayaking, fishing and much more.

Located in the heart of Tahko ski resort, this snug home makes for an easy Finnish break away from it all. We love the brown and cream tones that stay true both on the outside and indoors, making this cosy cabin look like a house made of chocolate. You’ll be walking distance from the ski lift, a golf course, a spa and restaurants, but if you feel like immersing yourself in nature, Lake Syväri is just a stroll away. After a day of activities, get the fireplace going and snuggle up on the leather sofa for a movie night. Later, make some dinner in the well-equipped kitchen, unwind in the private electric stove sauna, or just sip some Lakka on the porch outside and take in the fresh air around you. 

Chocolate Box

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

Rauha

This pistachio-coloured cabin is in a winning location if you’re looking to be close to the packed powder. Based in the Vuokatti ski centre, you’ll be minutes from the Vuokatti ski slope and the centre’s cross country track. And when the weather’s warmer, it’s just a 15-minute walk to the nearest beach. Outside, there’s plenty of storage space for skis and a small terrace for those long summer nights. Of course, this being Finland, you’d expect a sauna, and this home doesn’t disappoint. So whether it’s après ski or après hike, you can be guaranteed hot steam to help you unwind. The interior of this home is cool white with warm wood, and the open, double-height living space feels grand. There’s a sturdy wood burner to keep it warm, and up the steep wooden staircase, the cosy bedrooms are perfectly comfortable. 

Glacier Mint

Whether you're sweating it out in this home's private sauna or curled up with a book watching the snow fall on the pine trees, this home is a modern take on the traditional wooden lodge. Set in the heart of Lapland and a 10-minute drive from Ylläs ski resort, this spot has got everything needed for fabulous group holidays. When you're not hitting the slopes, there are sledges for exploring the woods, or during summer jump into the nearby lake, just five minutes away by car. The long evenings can be spent relaxing on the balcony on the home's wicker furniture, watching the endless twilight glow - we recommend stocking up the modern white kitchen with plenty of drinks and snacks and making a night of it. During winter, the living room fire will keep you cosy, and you can watch the snow fall through the double height windows.  

Reindeer's Reach

Wooden walls and floors, outdoor decking, and large sash windows give this semi-detached home an open feel – perfect for groups of friends, who don't mind having a neighbour next door (or who might want to take over both homes). The home is made of thermo log, recently built in 2019, so this is a home that takes the log cabin vibe and modernises it. In the summer, make the most of the long nights on the balcony, watching the twilight through the pine forest that surrounds the plot. Come winter, it's only a ten-minute drive to Ylläs ski resort – when you're done, get home and bag your space in the private sauna. Evenings are best spent in the living area, in front of the burning fire and watching the TV from the grey L-shaped sofa. If that sounds a bit too chilled out, ski and snowmobile trails run by the space, perfect for exploring this corner of Finland.

Lyre's Leap

Hidden behind a classic cabin exterior, this home is an unassuming gem just metres from the waters of Lake Inarijärvi. Timeless Finnish interior design forms a hassle-free and functional environment. Blanched wood walls – laminated on the outside for extra insulation – and stained-oak floors are illuminated by immense floor-to-ceiling windows in the living space, while the heathered grey sofa and sleek black furniture create a dramatic, contemporary contrast. In the daytime, when the weather’s fair, go foraging for cloudberry and mushrooms in the local area, or hire a boat for the afternoon. Spend the evening in your cabin’s lean-to, beside a roaring campfire, or, if you’re lucky, chasing the elusive Aurora Borealis. Winter visitors can enjoy snowmobile trails, winter hiking and skiing at Kiri, around a twenty-minute drive away. A true winter wonderland.

Cosied up in this chic, modern apartment, you’ll almost forget that you’re just a short walk from the pistes at Tahko resort. Right before you head out, enjoy a delicious meal with a cup of coffee in the dining area and step out to the balcony for a breath of fresh air and views of the snowy environs. At the resort, there’s also a spa centre, a sports hall and a range of restaurants. After some hours in the snow or a game of table tennis, swim in the heated pool or relax in the jacuzzi if you prefer, sample the á la carte menu at Kunkku for lunch and visit Pehkubaari in the evening for a serving of fondue. At first glance, this might seem like a charming, rustic wood cabin in a stunning lakeside setting – which it is. But head inside for a pleasingly unexpected vibe. We’re talking lavish interiors so polished and trendy you’ll think you stepped onto an Elle Decor shoot, but with added ‘hygge’. For every cool, white leather armchair there is a cosy rug to sink your toes into. For every insta-worthy light fitting, there is a candlestick or a huge open fireplace. There's a timeless charm to this lakeside log cabin, overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Saarijärvi. Chancing across this cute-as-a-button log cabin in the depths of winter, you might feel like you’ve stumbled into a fairy-tale. With walls made of jumbo logs and a thick blanket of snow on the roof, it’s got magic written all over it. Inside it’s as cosy as can be, with an open fire, animal pelts and contemporary furniture that contrasts perfectly with the rustic architecture. Three extra beds in the balcony area give options for families and friends sharing an enchanting break, and there’s a sauna for the full Finnish experience. You’re within walking distance (20 minutes) of Levi Centre, so you can ditch the car if you’re happy to stay local. With ski slopes, snowmobile tracks and cross-country ski trails galore, we don’t see why you’d want to go anywhere else. 

Snow Kiss

Wake up to frosted Nordic spruces and falling snowflakes glittering on the horizon when staying in this semi-detached cabin in Kolari. With wood-panelling inside and the Alpine forests surrounding you, you won't see the wood for the trees sat on the covered terrace with a cup of coffee; a fully immersive forest experience.  Bring along a pair of cross-country skis (there’s a shared drying room for storage) and explore the snow-blanketed trails on your doorstep. As you are in Lapland, try to spot a reindeer or even arrange a husky sleigh experience. The ski lift to the slopes of Äkäslompolo is less than 10 minutes drive away. Come back to your cosy home and warm up in the sauna before preparing dinner by the fireplace and then heading out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. There’s a little wooden fire-pit hut in the garden so you can spend the evening amongst the trees, even after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
