If the putting green isn’t your thing, perhaps a game of petanque on the home’s private lane or a rowdy game of table football indoors. Inside, the living area is vast and open, with macrame bean bags and an L-shaped sofa for lounging against a wall of glass to the outside world. This is where you’ll find indoor dining for the whole group – in a sunny spot surrounded by windows. The sleek, grey kitchen is all modernism and opens up via glass sliding doors to the patio, should you want to transport your dinner to the dining table outside. The real bonus is the additional cinema room, in rich, theatre-curtain red for family film nights. Bedrooms all boast floor-to-ceiling glass doors, which open up to the first-floor balcony or secluded little terraces. 

Should you wish to explore further than Aroeira, the soft-sanded beach at Fonte da Telha is less than ten minutes by car, and the buzzing centre of Lisbon is just a half-hour drive away.

Sitting close to the point at which Trás-os-Montes crosses over to the famed Alto-Douro wine region, this nine-hectare oak forest was abandoned in the middle of the 20th century and mother nature allowed to run her course. That is until 2010 when the farmhouse hidden away on the site was almost completely reconstructed into this incredible holiday home.

There are a few stone walls and wooden beams that hark back to this history, but otherwise, it's a strikingly modern affair, with a stylish collection of artwork, decorative items and furnishings waiting to be discovered throughout the space. There are so many aspects you're sure to be enamoured by as you take a tour, from the minimalist kitchen to the freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

That's not to forget the fabulous amenities here, either. If you're after a dose of relaxation, you're in luck – not only is there an indoor swimming pool, there's a sauna and Jacuzzi to retire to afterwards. There's also a fair bit of outside space for making the most of sunny weather, including a terrace with seating.

Plus, there's a whole range of distractions that lie nearby, too. Parque Natural do Alvão is a short drive away if you're ever in the mood for long rambles through scenic Portuguese countryside, while there are a number of towns close by – Vila Real and Régua among them – in which you can get acquainted with the region's rich gastronomic traditions.

We adore the bohemian decor and characterful artwork, such as the coloured glass collection, woven fabrics and wicker furniture, which gives the home a warm and welcoming feel. You can spend sunny mornings out on your shaded terrace, with a large lounge area that makes for a great place for your morning coffee. You can cook up delicious chorizo scrambled eggs in your quaint kitchen area and tuck in alfresco at the shaded dining table. If you love to make an entrance, you'll be smitten with this home perched upon the banks of the River Douro. You are, of course, more than welcome to arrive by car, but there's also the option to travel by boat from Pinhão or a local farm and alight at the private pier.

Whatever means you use to show up, you're sure to be instantly wowed by this remarkable address, one of two neighbouring homes that date back to 1876. While the exterior is traditional in appearance, the interior has been thoroughly modernised – and the home even comes with its own chef.

This magical home in a stunning rural location has to be seen to be believed. Nestled in the Minho region of northern Portugal, it's around an hour from Porto, with the city of Braga just 10 miles away, but all you'll see here are green hills in every direction. 

Set on a hillside, your home has incredible gardens that go up and up, at one point disappearing into woodland. With a number of lawns and terraces, as well as a beautiful private pool and terrace, you won't be short of outside space – or somewhere for some quiet reading away from the group.

Inside, this traditional home has bags of character, with exposed stone walls, an eclectic mix of statement furniture and plenty of colourful wall art. A cosy living room features a log burner for the cooler months and there's a practical kitchen with all the mod-cons. And here you can choose to eat at the antique dining table indoors or out on the beautiful covered terrace. The sugary white sand beaches are just an eight-minute drive away too, where you can either watch the surfers or get on the waves yourself. There’s something special and nostalgic about exploring an area by cycling around – your host can provide you with a bike to discover the idyllic natural beauty of rice terraces, pristine beaches, and the forests of Comporta.

You’ll find this eighteenth-century Pombaline residence standing proud along the water’s edge of the charming fishing town of Vila Real de Santo António in the Algarve.

With its impossible-to-miss red façade, lofty frescoed ceilings, and mosaic-tiled floors, this is the Portuguese retreat you have dreamed about. But we doubt you’d imagined an achingly cool shared swimming pool high on the rooftop with breathtaking views of the mighty Guadiana River. Neither did we.

Back downstairs in the apartment, while the historic splendour remains, mid-century-inspired wooden furniture dials down the ornate features beautifully –⁠ and a luxurious bathroom and smart kitchen bring everything firmly into the twenty-first century. 

Sunny days call for coffees and breakfast on the shady outdoor terrace before an early morning dip in the pool to awaken the senses. 

Should you ever be tempted to stray from the suntrap roof terrace, the vast sands of Praia de Santo António are just an eleven-minute drive away. And when thoughts turn to food, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars serving up tasty seafood plates and a glass of something chilled just steps away along the harbourfront.

If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.


Finesse in the Forest

Situated in the heart of the city, this stylish studio apartment really packs a punch. As soon as you step inside and set your suitcases down, your eyes will be drawn to the stunning sea views visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. With walls of glass wrapping around the home and the sunlight bouncing off the water outside, this home is bathed in natural light. When you wake in the morning, roll out of bed, pour yourself a coffee and settle down on the sofa to drink in the vista as you plan how to spend your day. If you fancy a swim before heading out to explore, the shared pool offers the perfect respite from the Portuguese sun, or you could choose to soak up the rays beside it, holiday read in hand. 

Locally, you have a plethora of restaurants, bars and shops to enjoy or if you fancy a stroll in the sun, there’s a beautiful promenade that will take you to Funchal Marina and the CR7 museum, for those footy fans amongst you.

Settle into this cosy wooden cabin on the Minho coastline, ideal for a long weekend or couple's retreat. The large communal pool and children's play area offer entertainment and a refreshing break from the Portuguese sun, while the private patio boasts room to dine alfresco and work on that perfect tan. While space indoors is limited, the kitchen is fully equipped and one guest can be accommodated on the sofa bed. We think it's worth having a car here for getting around with ease, but if you don't drive, fear not. The centre of Fão is a breezy stroll away, while the golden sands of Praia de Ofir are easily reachable on foot.

Tucked away on a quiet street in Albufeira’s historic Old Town, this studio apartment is the perfect base for a couple or solo traveller looking for a convenient location in the Algarve. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and situated only a few minutes walk from dos Pescadores beach, you couldn’t be better positioned if your priority is proximity to the sand. While the apartment is small, it does have a kitchenette and an alfresco dining terrace where you can enjoy home-cooked breakfasts in the sun.

The villa is bright and stylish, with decor and finishes that would be at home in an interior design magazine. It’s beautiful, with splashes of colour adding warmth and fun. You’ll wake up to feel the sunshine on your pillow, tempting you to head through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors outside to the terrace. Sip an espresso as you breathe in the warm, sweet-scented air. 

The outside space has been as thoughtfully considered as the house. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a sun-worshipper or prefer to lounge in the shade. Table tennis will keep the big kids entertained, while you cool off in the refreshing solar-heated pool. There’s a gym inside, too, so you can easily get a workout in – though we might be more tempted by a yoga session on the terrace. 

When you want to explore further afield, you might stroll to Galé beach, or perhaps hop in the car to visit Troia. History buffs will enjoy seeing the Roman ruins at Cetobriga, while golfers might choose to stay closer to home – Troia Golf is a five-minute drive from the villa. This is truly a holiday home with something for everyone – you’ll never want to leave.

This home is really made for spending time outdoors, with so many places to relax as the sun warms your skin. Overlooking your crystal blue pool is a delightful undercover seating area, so if you aren’t dining alfresco, you can pop your feet up on the comfortable white chaise with a glass of wine in hand. Venture inside and it’s just as charming – picture neutral colours, natural materials and wonderful open-plan spaces ideal for entertaining. We love the bedrooms, in particular – each has its own colour theme providing a calming effect to complement the tasteful modern artwork. 

On your way to the beach, just 2km away, crawl into the local restaurant for a spot of lunch. Comporta's coastlines are picturesque, perfect for lounging in the sand and catching the rays. After a day of soaking up the Portuguese sunshine, be sure to gather your loved ones around the built-in barbecue back at home for an evening watching the sunset and indulging in divine local ingredients. A beautiful contemporary villa with a relaxing zen feeling will be the backdrop to a wonderful holiday to remember.
