Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. There's more to Alfama than exploring medieval architecture and its fado legacy. Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

With a fabulous central location and set in a renovated period building, this home is simple, smart, and a little bit sassy. Painted all white, with shuttered windows and warm wood floors, it's a traditional apartment with some far from traditional wall art (we see you, Julia Roberts). The kitchen is sleek and modern, with all you could need to whip up light meals, and the bedrooms are spacious and full of natural light. You'll even have a narrow balcony here, on which to sip coffee, read a newspaper and people watch on the street below. On the lower side of Alfama, you'll get to enjoy a view of the Sé Cathedral, and all the city's sights are within walking distance – we recommend you start your tour at the nearby Praça do Comércio.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.

Set on a typically narrow street, lined with historic buildings, it's a traditional second-floor home with a very special secret. This city centre apartment comes with outside space in the form of a large patio with a central orange tree – and yes, you can help yourself to fruit in season.

Spend your days roaming the ancient streets and exploring the sights (you're never far from a Fado restaurant here) and come home to cook for the whole gang in the bright, open-plan living room, before padding out to the patio to eat together as the sun sets. Inside, it's a stylish mix of modern minimalism and country comfort. All-white walls and wood floors keep everything cool, while period touches like Juliet balconies and shuttered windows add elegance.

This home is situated in the cultural hotspot of the Intendente district, close to the city centre, so you’ll find plenty of multicultural food options and azulejo-covered old buildings. There are some beautiful views from the nearby Chapel of Our Lady of the Mountain, as well as the Mirador Nuestra Señora del Monte. Intendente Station on the Green Line of the Lisbon Metro is under a five-minute walk away, so the rest of Lisbon is easy to access, too.

Inside this stylish apartment, multiple French doors allow light to flood in. Pour a glass of wine and take in the views over the neighbourhood from the small balconies. We love the polished wooden floors and grey colour scheme enlivened by pops of cheerful yellow.

Inside the apartment itself, there's a tranquil ambiance thanks to the blue and cream colour scheme, reminding you that the water's edge isn't too far away. In a period building typical of this ancient part of the city, it's been lovingly brought into the 21st century by owners who clearly care about the quality of the finish. The characteristic Pombalina wooden cage of the stone building shows itself in the open-plan living space. Invented after the great earthquake of the 1750s, it's an architectural structure to ensure stability. It also happens to look really cool. You may also spot some other historic features in the home – an old salting trough in one of the bathrooms, a huge stone fireplace in a bedroom and antique recovered tiles made into large panels that adorn the corridors. At the same time, it's a smart, modern home with luxurious furnishings, and an on-trend black and marble kitchen. We love the views over Lisbon's rooftops from the balcony too. When you're ready to explore you'll be a five-minute walk to Praça do Comércio, which opens up to the Tagus river. The stylish neighbourhood of Chiado is a ten-minute walk away, as are the Ribeira Market and Campo das Cebolas.

Miguel used to live in Hunter, and it’s immediately clear that the flat used to be someone’s home. Things like the quality of the mattresses really stand out, as they are often overlooked in rental homes, but that isn’t the case here. The design is, of course, eye-catching – you don’t need us to tell you that – and even if not everyone goes for it, they will go for the views from the balcony. Throw in the fantastic location near in Chiado, and you’re onto a winner.

The Baixa district was completely rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed it in the mid-eighteenth century – now it's lined with neoclassical architecture, outstanding museums, stunning squares, and plenty of shopping opportunities, and this characterful apartment is right in the heart of it. Just a five-minute walk to the Praça do Comércio, you'll feel immersed in Lisbon's culture, history and commercial centre. Verging on old-timey Alfama, you really couldn't be better placed location-wise for all there is to eat, drink and do here. If you feel like a quiet indoor moment's downtime, relax in the bright, contemporary living/dining area with a glass of Lisbon wine. We love how the original features are still intact, while the modern furniture merges old and new in elegant fashion. Knock up a homemade piri piri chicken in the sleek kitchen to be enjoyed in the stylish dining area with Eames-inspired chairs. Although, with a host of eateries and family-run restaurants right on your doorstep, we think you'll be dining out most evenings.

Of course, those areas attract visitors for a reason, and you're well within a ten-to-twenty-five minute walk of most of the city's headline attractions, including Sé de Lisboa, Praça do Comercio and Convento do Carmo. However, for an authentic taste of Lisbon, there are plenty of classic cafes and local restaurants closer to home that will charge you a lot less by dint of not being in the centre.

This beautiful apartment sits atop the highest of the seven hills of Lisbon, overlooking the sea of red-tiled roofs, in the historical neighbourhood of Graça. You're surrounded by an area steeped in history, starting right at home in this apartment, which was built back in 1920. 

Cloaked in rich tapestry and quirky decor, this home has an undeniable air of splendour. We particularly love the regal piano, calling you for late-night sing-along sessions. But when you step into the kitchen, you'll see how homely and inviting this apartment is, with its colourful tiles and huge dining table fit for family dinners of laughs, drinks, and old stories. It's one that's built to be cooked in, and in this beautiful, well-equipped kitchen, you'll be glad to do so. It also gives you a sneak peek of the jaw-dropping beauty that's outside, the pièce de résistance of this home – the balcony. 

You can step right out onto the balcony from the kitchen and living room, and there's even a smaller one that can be accessed from both bedrooms. From the main balcony, you're treated to one of the best views in all of Lisbon, it's even good enough to rival the nearby Senhora do Monte viewpoint. You'll love spending lazy mornings sipping on coffee, looking out at the view, and feeling the glow of the morning sun on your face, before heading out to explore Lisbon. 

You're steps away from the historic 28 tram, which famously takes passengers to all of Lisbon's most iconic and beautiful neighbourhoods. Alfama, the cathedral, Baixa, all the way to Campo Ourique. Get lost through the city's narrow, winding roads, stop off at quaint bars, and sample traditional Portuguese cuisine, before your feet can no longer carry you and it's time to head back to your apartment. But really, you'll be looking forward to getting back home so you can sip on a glass of local wine and watch the sunset from the best seat in town. Soak it all in before getting the barbecue going for balmy nights of grilled food, drinks, and card games on the balcony.

In the hilly old streets of Lisbon’s Alfama neighbourhood, you’ve got viewpoints and ancient sights at every turn. From your doorstep, it’s a fifteen-minute walk to the ancient fortification of Castelo S. Jorge, overlooking the orange rooftops of Old Lisbon. A little closer to home, you can explore the trinkets and artworks of Mercado de Santa Clara, a vintage market five minutes’ walk away. Of course, this close to the centre, the streets around you are packed with restaurants, bars and bakeries to fuel your days.

Inside, fawn walls are livened up with bold floral artworks and pops of lipstick-red thanks to the plush dining chairs. The kitchen is a soothing space of lightwood and white, with everything you need for self-catering. Perhaps serve meals at the table in the conservatory-style covered courtyard where a roof of glass lets the natural light stream in.

Baixa is our favourite place to stay in Lisbon. It's packed with restaurants and cafes, all while being a short walk away from the city sights. Golden Feathers is right in front of a famous tram 28 stop, so there's no excuse for staying in. This is a soft, comfortable home that mixes metallic hues with high-quality materials. While we would like to see a bit more of a personal touch in what is clearly a rental home, it's a great base for urban exploration.

This home feels comfortable, high-end, and characterful. It’s hard to ask for more, but we picked it apart and here’s what we found. The Handhake's baren bones are great – this home is located inside a renovated Baixa townhouse, which has high ceilings and French windows as standard, but the host didn’t rely solely on that. There are a few nice pieces of art in here, notably the statuettes and the mirrors in the bedroom, which give it a modern look.

A real gem of a place, in a great location, this home is perfect if you're here to experience the buzz of city life in Lisbon. Part of a traditional period building, it's been beautifully restored to show off its best features – the living room's three sets of French doors out to the narrow, wrought iron balcony, the window shutters and the exposed parts of the wooden pombolina skeleton structure this area is known for. We love the wood floors and white walls, keeping everything cool and minimalist, while the velvet sofas and house plants make it feel like a real home from home. Here you'll be on the edge of Cais do Sodré and the Bairro Alto, so you’re in the heart of Lisbon’s thriving restaurant and bar scenes, with somewhere different to try within walking distance every night of the week.

This slick, multi-level apartment sits in cool and central Príncipe Real. Inside is characterful, warm, and welcoming. Lisbon Cathedral and Praça do Comércio are both around a three-minute stroll, while the chic boutiques of Chiado are under a fifteen-minute walk. Historical Alfama, on the other hand, with its medieval architecture, is ten minutes on foot. If you fancy a day at the beach, your lovely hosts can arrange a trip to Cascais, a little over a thirty-minute ride away. Or let them make reservations at a typical fado restaurant for you – there are an array of fantastic eateries right on your doorstep. There's a contrast between the interior of this apartment and its historic neighbourhood – the design of this place has a cool and calm Scandinavian vibe. Some details speak of its history and surroundings, though, such as the original azulejo tiles and Alfama-themed art – we love the wooden shutters and the 19th-century painting on the living room wall too. A welcome retreat in the very middle of the city, this Lisbon apartment is a great find. It’s set above the fray, and while you’ll never find somewhere completely silent so centrally, the calm aura of the flat goes a long way to mitigate any noise that rises up from the street below. Of course, the incredibly comfortable beds don’t hurt either. The flat also has beautiful views across the city to Se Cathedral, and while the living room isn’t huge, the windows bring in enough natural light to make it feel bigger than it is. Step out into the streets and you'll soon discover you couldn't be better placed. Many of the Portuguese capital's headline sights are within a few hundred metres, including the vast Praça do Comércio and 
Sé. Thanks to its location, there's always a buzz in Baixa and you won't have to walk far to discover neighbourhood Ginjinha kiosks, swanky rooftop bars and mouthwatering restaurants. 

Breathe In

With a fantastic location, just a three-minute walk to the picturesque neighbourhood of Bairro Alto, a culinary hotspot, this stylish apartment has a wealth of bars, restaurants and historic architecture right on its doorstep. If you fancy a bit of retail therapy, on the other hand, Chiado with its chic boutiques, is only a ten-minute stroll away. You can even walk to some of the city’s iconic attractions such as Lisbon Cathedral, São Jorge Castle and Miradouro Portas do Sol in under thirty minutes. If you don’t fancy exploring on foot, the famous Tram 28 passes through the district, while the Glória Funicular is just over a five-minute saunter. Or, to get the most out of your trip, let the concierge organise tickets and experiences for you. Back at this modern home – there’s a lot we adore about this place, from the wooden floors and inspirational quotes to the gorgeous bathroom and little windows with cute shutters. The host, Patrícia, has also made a lighting scheme which creates a warm atmosphere – it’s easy to see that she has a love of design. So, relax with a glass of wine at the dining table and enjoy a Portuguese feast. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

Getting lost in Mouraria's winding streets is a trip into the past, and part of the neighbourhood's authentic appeal. The Azure Terrace is situated in a house typical for the neighbourhood, which means that the outside (in stark contrast to the home itself) is a bit scruffy. The Azure Terrace is a home with all the features we want to see in a Lisbon Plum home – a private terrace, cute rustic design with lots of modern features and plenty of natural light. The abundance of fado shown in the vicinity is just a bonus.

Blue Creek is an immaculate home, located in downtown Lisbon – which is perfect if you want to explore the city on foot. The neighbourhood is always busy with tourists, especially this close to Praça do Comércio, which means you'll have to walk a bit farther away to get a more authentic atmosphere – but the brunch cafes around here are amazing. This is a modern, bright home with high ceilings and modern furniture. It's also equipped with everything you might need to feel comfortable, from extra cutlery to generous storage space.
