Steps from the apartment is the riverfront, where Porto’s famous wine cellars line the banks, and walking the narrow streets of the neighbourhood you’ll find delights like Palacio Bolta three minutes away, and Mercado Ferreira Borges five minutes on foot. The first thing you’ll notice, stepping into the apartment, is the view directly over the Douro River from the wall of big windows in the living room. Wooden shutters add a touch of tradition, and the darkwood dressers and artfully faded Moroccan rugs are in keeping with the building’s history. Located only a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower, On The Lookout's rooftop terrace offers a rival view to the Cathedral and downtown architecture. The insides of this home are equally impressive, with a welcoming communal area all dressed in wood. The rustic touches are added in the form of forest animal prints, which adds to the warm ambiance in every room. This stylish apartment is a superb base in Porto. It’s in a wonderfully central location close to many of the city’s most popular sights, including the Sé do Porto, which you can walk to in less than thirty minutes. For further afield attractions, you can hop on the metro at Heroísmo station, a 140-metre walk away. The apartment is close to restaurants and cafes, as well as some excellent pastry shops – you’ll never be too far from your next pastel de nata. We love the simplicity of this attractive home, with its petite balcony and open-plan living and dining space. It’s a great choice for a large group.

The chic living space has warm wooden floors and mid-century style furniture. Rustle up a Porto staple, the substantial francesinha sandwich in the modern kitchen. Or there are plenty of restaurants and cafes on your doorstep if you don't fancy cooking. 

There are many attractions nearby too. Head to Livraria Lello, one of the world's most beautiful bookstores, under a fifteen-minute stroll away. Porto Cathedral and Bolhão Market are both a twenty-five-minute walk. Or, lovers of sculpture can visit the Soares dos Reis National Museum, eight minutes on foot.

You’ll love standing on the balcony each morning, soaking up the sun as you sip your coffee. Prepare a quick breakfast in the petite open-plan kitchen before heading out to see the sights. This home is centrally located, so you’ll be able to easily explore on foot and by using the metro. You’re within easy walking distance of Casa da Música, ideal if you’re planning on catching a show during your stay.

Amble alongside the Duoro River with an ice cream in hand before watching the world pass by in a charming cafe. In the early evening, we recommend watching the sunset from the nearby Miradouro da Rua das Aldas viewpoint.

This home nearly feels like staying on a boat – what with the large French doors opening directly onto the Douro River. Whether you’re sat on the sofa or enjoying a coffee at the dining table, you’ll have sweeping views of the water and the city. The windows’ second benefit is the sheer amount of light the living space gets, bathing the tasteful furniture in the warm sun. We could spend hours with a book in the armchair, taking in the sea air as the day grows to a peak. But of course, this central location leaves much to be explored. You can wander along the riverfront’s picturesque fishing neighbourhoods, hopping on the 1930s tram that runs to Foz. Or, board on a boat that will take you to the famous terraced Douro vineyards to sample Vinho Verde and Port. You’ll be walking distance from beautiful historic buildings, located in one of the quietest streets of Ribeira, and only a thirteen-minute walk from São Bento Railway Station – which will connect you all over the city.

Porto is a city perhaps best known for the fortified wine that borrows its name, so it only feels appropriate that this large apartment in the downtown area of the city feels like it has been designed for gathering people together.

Of course, it wouldn't be Porto if wonderful cafes didn't also line the streets.

And while this is a studio, the addition of a sleeping platform up a few steps divides the space neatly – creating storage beneath. Step out of bed and straight into your in-room rainfall shower, before making a cup of coffee and opening up the shutters to gaze across at the park.

With wine bars and cafes on your street, you won't have to go far for a true taste of Porto, and the riverside is just a ten-minute walk.

Right in the heart of the city, this central apartment is ideally suited for those looking to visit the top sights and cultural attractions. Due to the location, there's potential for noise here. Light sleepers may want to pack earplugs. You're right by Ribeira, with the waterfront's restaurants, bars and cafes just a short walk away. There's limited living space and the kitchen is only suitable for preparing light bites, but it's a good pick for solo travellers or couples. You'll notice the colourful decor that creates a welcoming home, while the exposed stone is a nice touch. Open up the shutters and invite the sounds of Porto into the apartment, as you relax after a busy day of sightseeing.

Sitting just a short walk from Alfândega and the Douro River, this duplex apartment is a convenient base for a group of friends or family. You’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this second-floor apartment, so keep that in mind. The third bedroom lacks some privacy, though the sliding doors allow you to partition it off from the living area. And while the dining room doesn’t accommodate all six guests, you'll find plenty of casual eateries, bars and cafes on your doorstep. We had to break from doing some serious shopping to tell you about this Porto gem. This elegant apartment, housed in a recently renovated 20th-century building, is located right in the heart of the pedestrianised retail hub of Rua Santa Catarina. For fresh produce and a vibrant atmosphere, head to Mercado do Bolhão, a three-minute walk away. It's not all about shopping, though – the Chapel of Souls is a two-minute walk away, where you'll discover its beautiful azulejo tiled façade. Or take a break in the Café Majestic, a beautiful Art Nouveau café, a five-minute walk from this home. A little further, Porto Cathedral is fourteen minutes on foot. Then stop off at the small port wine shop opposite this home and take some back to this apartment.

Inside, there are furnishings from Portuguese designers and artists. Lots of large windows allow light to flood in. We adore the spacious open plan living space with its two French doors, which open onto a small balustraded balcony overlooking the street. Off the bedroom, there's a secluded terrace too, perfect for a coffee or glass of Port. Later, chill out on the mezzanine level or have a game of chess. There's plenty of room for a family or friends to spread out here. If you prefer to eat in, whip up a bacalhau à Gomes (cod casserole) in the modern kitchen and enjoy it at your dining table. Honestly, though, you probably won't be spending that much time indoors with so much on your doorstep.
