Those who see being described as 'meticulous' as something to be proud of will adore this three-storey home in San Diego's North Park neighbourhood. Every component has been thoughtfully considered, from the manicured gardens upon entrance and the colourful modern furniture in the living room, to the sleek kitchen bathed in natural light from the windows running along one wall. Even the exterior is pleasing to look at, the clean lines and black panelling making it stand out as a pillar of modernity in the locale. That being said, you won't feel as if you're in a showroom, thanks to the bountiful amount of space dedicated to relaxation — our favourite has to be the balcony on the first floor that puts you at tree-top level. The location is superb, too. Balboa Park — which holds San Diego Zoo — can be reached in under fifteen minutes on foot, while you can drive to Coronado Beach in ten minutes.

You can make the five-minute walk down to Ocean Beach to admire a magical sunset over the water, try your hand at surfing or simply stroll along the sand. Just two minutes away you'll find the local farmer's market, which sells artisanal produce every Wednesday. And, should you fancy an evening out in the city's traditional Gaslamp Quarter, you can drive there in just twelve minutes.

Whether you're in town for work or play, location is key, and you couldn't be better placed here – just minutes from San Diego International Airport, Little Italy, Downtown Gaslamp, and the area's beaches. That said, there are plenty of wonderful cafes and historic neighbourhoods within walking distance, so you don't have to rely on four wheels all the time. And even when you're looking to travel further afield, it's a short stroll to the trolley stop, which can whisk you to the Gaslamp Quarter. Alternatively, take the COASTER train north to chic beach towns like Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad. It’s also a short drive from downtown San Diego if you’re craving city life, or you can get your nature fix exploring the scenic coastal paths.

Come evening, head back to your abode. You’ll find the communal outdoor space is more than big enough for socialising – share a bottle of California white wine on the patio or get the fire pit going to toast marshmallows.

From biking along the boardwalk to boating, paddleboarding, sailing and swimming – it's safe to say you won't be short of things to do in this neck of the woods. With Mission Bay Aquatic Center located just steps away, and breakfast spots, coffee houses, pubs and restaurants all within close walking distance – you needn't lift so much as a finger when it comes to meal times. However, it's nice to have the option of cooking at the villa, should you wish to rustle up your own recipes too. 

Spread across three levels, watch the sailboats glide across the bay from anywhere in the home – whether that's from the top-floor balcony or down on the ground-level patio with lounge seating. Grab a drink and station yourself ready to watch the sunset over the bayfront. Bliss. We couldn't think of a dreamier way to start and end your days here than with a leisurely stroll along the bayside boardwalks. Or better still, make footprints in the sand as you listen to the waves crash before you on the beach itself.

At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.

The living room is decorated with wicker furniture and nautical touches, with four skylights making it a perfect spot to relax in a sunbeam and watch the sea swell from your window. The bedroom is equally relaxing, with a comfortable bed and a flat screen TV for lazy evenings; your only trouble will be deciding which beach to visit and which La Jolla Village restaurant to try next. This home is best suited for two people, but if you wanted to bring some friends or children, the sofa bed in the living area offers two additional sleep options.

Head out the door of this immaculate beach house and you’ll find yourself just seconds away from the golden sands of Mission Beach. Inside, the cool coastal palette reflects the dreamy beachfront location, with accents of driftwood and natural rattan, and there are excellent views of the ocean from the large sun deck. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

The fact that this beach cottage can also be found in the Mission Bay area makes the trip out to San Diego even more of a must. Ideal for a family stay or reunion of friends, think of this home as a portal to all things spectacular. The beach, for one, is a quick walk away, and so are a number of great restaurants and markets. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.

It's quite compact, but this home is in a great location for active holidays on the South California coast. Take a paddle board to the surf – there’s one provided – or cycle along the peninsula using one of the free bikes. If you need a rest, take a moment to pause on the golden sands of South Mission Beach and soak up the rays. Back at home you can soak your muscles in the shared spa pool, before refuelling with a barbecue on the beach or a bite from one of nearby Mission Boulevard's hip cafés.

Of course, it only helps that Afternoon Delight is also a wonderful space to call home. This modern build can accommodate up to five guests comfortably, with one of them sleeping on the double pull-down bed in the second living space. The rest of the home has been beautifully furnished and boasts modern amenities and appliances for a relaxing stay.

Even if you decide to stay in, you're not cut off from the action: the rooftop overlooks San Diego and fireworks at Sea World on the right day.
