Though you’re on the sunny California shores of Laguna Beach, there’s a Nantucket vibe to this beach house. Wooden bannisters on balconies, a clapboard facade and a white-wood porch out back give it that New England boathouse feel, alongside nautical touches like painted life rings and scenes of the sea on the walls. After a day at the beach (Treasure Island Cove is a five-minute walk), head back to your peaceful garden for a drink in the shade, or head up to the balcony at sunset and watch the sky and sea streak pink and purple. Perhaps fire up the grill for a fresh seafood feast under the porch. Inside, you'll find a wet bar in the lounge if you fancy a cocktail by the fire. Your host owns a furnishing company, and it shows in the designer sofas and Hungarian goose down comforters on sprawling beds. We particularly love the fresh flowers in the kitchen and the superb views of the ocean from every room.

The Captain's Boathouse

Built in 1960, this mid-century modern home is located just two blocks from the village and the beach itself, you couldn't be in a better position to enjoy all the area has to offer. The home still has that vintage charm whilst also having a sleek modern interior. There's even a fireplace in the living room, perfect for a winter's day if you find yourself staying here during those colder months.

Just a short walk from the beach and close by to some delicious eateries – we recommend Taco Loco for some amazing fusion food. Why not be adventurous and try out some surfing using equipment bought at Surf N Paddle?

After a day spent at the beach, or in the water, head back home to cook up a tasty feast on the BBQ. Feel free to spend the evening gathered around the outdoor fire pit or sit back and relax on the magical patio with sweeping views of the ocean.

Go to bed after watching the spectacular sunset over the Pacific and wake up to the sound of the crashing waves at this jaw-dropping beachfront home in the surfside city of San Clemente. 

Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.

Come the summer months, there's a private balcony space surrounded by greenery where you can sit out and soak up the glorious Californian sunshine. While there's enough at the address to keep you distracted, there's also plenty to offer in the local neighbourhood. Highlights include the magic of Disneyland only ten minutes by car, sprawling Oak Canyon Park reachable in twenty, and the OC's surfside cities, all no more than twenty-five minutes away.

However, that's not to say that if you're not a surf pro, you won't find something for you here. Your host provides some boogie boards for the kids and beach chairs for a slightly more sedate experience down at the beach. But a stay here isn't just about the coastline, with hiking trails, pristine golf courses, and shopping are all a stone's throw away. 

The vibrant home itself shouldn’t go without a mention – its shared roof terrace makes for a wonderful spot to watch the sunset over the sea. Indoors, the coastal inspiration is clear. In the north of Santa Ana, this apartment is the ideal bolthole for a couple or solo traveller looking to discover everything on the doorstep. It’s a two-minute walk to West 17th Street where shops and restaurants line the street and a four-minute drive or twenty-minute walk into the heart of Downtown Santa Ana. 

Alternatively, sprinkle a little fairy dust on your stay with a visit to Disneyland, a ten-minute drive away, hit the surf at the breathtaking beaches that Orange County's stunning coastline, within a half-hour drive, or seek out another side of LA's movie magic and head into Hollywood 37 miles north-west.

There's space to sit out and enjoy alfresco drinks on the private balcony, while the dedicated workspace and super fast wi-fi make remote work a breeze. The local shopping centre is a light stroll from your doorstep, but we think it's worth hiring a car here to get the most out of this fantastic location. Along with Orange County's golden coastline, you'll find Huntington Beach Central Park and Meadowlark Golf Club an easy drive away, and Anaheim's Disneyland Resort is less than an hour away by car.
