Nestled in the city of Roseville, California, this modern home is great for friends and families. Well-behaved pets are welcome for an additional fee, and your host can provide a cot and safety equipment for little ones. You'll find a gym, shops, and Blue Oaks Park within walking distance. That said, we recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay here – it's less than an hour's drive to Sacramento, and a couple of hours into San Francisco for day trips.

With its dark wooden frames and surrounding woodland, this home makes for a cosy stay despite its large size. Spread across a few floors, this impressive and innovative spot is somewhere between a townhouse and a lodge. It is just outside of the city centre of Truckee, surrounded by parkland and a river that keeps you close to nature.

In winter, watch snow grace the terrain and head to one of the ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe. The lake itself is a family paradise in the summer months when you can kayak and swim in it.

Just outside of the village of Calistoga in the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, you'll encounter this rustic yet refined retreat surrounded by acres of verdant vineyards and lush gardens. With no nearby neighbours, enjoy that all-too-rare feeling of seclusion, yet the convenience of only being a mile and a half from downtown Calistoga. The estate is divided across three adjacent villas – which helps maintain privacy for large family get-togethers and groups of friends – while there's a yurt on the grounds that makes for an adventurous option for the kids. Everything here is set up for outdoor living. There are no fewer than twelve sets of French doors leading out onto ~1,000 sq ft of balconies and ~2,000 sq ft of patio space. The large outdoor gazebo boasts a full outdoor kitchen with a serious gas barbecue and alfresco dining area overlooking the stunning pool and Jacuzzi area. In addition to the usual high-end outdoor amenities, you'll also find professional-standard courts for sand volleyball, bocce ball and tennis. We sense a bit of friendly competition. Take a peek inside the barn, and you'll find a private games room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and dartboard and a large rose garden adjacent to the villa, which provides fresh roses daily.

Surrounded by hiking trails, golf courses, and stretches of Pacific coast, this home in Santa Cruz not only has an enviable location, but it’s bursting with the potential for plenty of memories made. The backyard, alone, has a private swimming pool, tiki bar, and a swath of green turf that the kids will love running around on – especially when they’re hiding from the dinosaur. Now, although their ancestor is just a statue, the chickens are very real – find them in their coop when you’re making the rounds outdoors. Pass through trees, make your way up and down steps as you stretch out and shake off the last dregs of sleep, and refresh yourself with a morning swim before going back inside to brew a pot of fresh coffee.

While you’ll be sorely tempted to bliss out in soothing seclusion forever, take just a short walk and you’ll reach both the banks of the Russian River, and the streets of downtown Guerneville. The jagged coastline caters to a whole range of visitors, from surfers who like to ride the bay's impressive waves to photographers keen on catching the beautiful light. Or go for a hike on Shelter Cove Beach, a six-minute stroll away. There's an array of surf shops and some fantastic local eateries on your doorstep too. For a more action-packed day trip, San Francisco and all it has to offer is just a twenty-five-minute drive from this home. Chic, coastal-inspired interiors, polished concrete floors, and vast windows make it a delight to stay here. We love the vistas over Pedro Point from the living room and balcony – enjoy a glass of Californian rosé wine while enjoying the views. Later whip up a Clam Chowder in the kitchen before relaxing on the comfy sofa – this place is all about unwinding.

Petite yet perfectly equipped with everything you need for a relaxing stay, this bright home in Pacifica is ready to welcome you into a blissful coastal break. With its large windows, there’s plenty of California sun that pours in creating a dazzling effect against the neutral decor that’s sprinkled with reclaimed wood. There's a harmony here between the natural world and modern sophistication to create a home that is as sleek as it is serene. The bedroom, meanwhile, is pared-yet and wonderfully comfortable, while the bathroom’s rainfall shower is a treat to wake up to each day. Our favourite spot, however, is the wraparound balcony – the ideal place to sip your morning coffee or watch the sunset over the mountains over a glass of wine.  Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty of cute surf shops and cafes on your way to Pacifica State Beach (a ten-minute walk) – a favourite for surfers, photographers and nature enthusiasts – while San Francisco waits to be explored, just twenty minutes away by car.

Tucked away in the serene coastal community of Pedro Point, this modern cabin offers the perfect escape to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Located just a nine-minute walk from Pacifica State Beach and a six-minute stroll from Shelter Cove Beach – you'll be blown away by the bay's beauty, making it a popular spot for photographers. It's also a favourite amongst surfers, so whether you like to be part of the action or watch it all from a safe distance, Pacifica State Beach caters to all. There is a range of surf shops and some great local eateries on your doorstep too. For those who want to see more than just the coast, San Francisco is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away. When you're done exploring all that the San Francisco Peninsula has to offer, head home and rustle up a cioppino in the modern kitchen. We love the balcony with its views over the neighbourhood – perfect for a sundowner. The great location of this residence puts you within one mile of Incline Beach, where you can enjoy a stunning stretch of golden beach, azure waves, and green pine under the Tahoe sun. You absolutely must visit Lake Tahoe National Park, which features the shimmering lake, beautiful woodland scenery, and various fantastic trails for you to experience. After a busy day out exploring the area, head home to savour a barbecue feast on the balcony, before cosying up on comfortable sofas with the kids and playing a board game or watching the TV in front of the fire.

This delightful Wine Country home is a superb choice for a family or group of friends hoping to relax, unwind, and try some of California’s finest tipples. A newly built cottage, this home sits just eight miles from Healdsburg Plaza, and a few minutes from Lake Sonoma. It’s far enough from town to feel like a real retreat, but you’re within easy reach of anything you might need. Best of all, there are dozens of wineries within minutes. 

As soon as you arrive, you’ll be taken by the stunning vineyard views – this really is a pretty setting. The home has been designed in the style of an Italian villa, with wooden floors and stylish decor. It’s wonderfully comfortable too – after a long day, you can curl up in front of the fireplace to sip tea and enjoy a moment of tranquillity. The kitchen is wonderfully well stocked with utensils so you can whip up feasts with no trouble at all – or, easier still, book a private chef to wow your guests. 

The porch is a strong contender for our favourite spot. Take a seat in a rocking chair as the sun is sinking in the sky, and sip a glass of the wine you most enjoyed that day. You’ll feel a million miles from the hustle and bustle. Continue to unwind by slipping into the hot tub. After one last glass of wine and a few marshmallows toasted over the fire pit, you’ll be ready to sink into a comfortable bed for an excellent night’s sleep. We love it here. 


Cabernet Cottage

Sitting in the middle of California's Wine Country, you might picture homes here to lie on the rustic side of things, but that couldn't be further from the truth at this address. 

Behind the sliding glass doors, guests will find an interior that is exquisitely put together – whitewashed walls are adorned with tasteful artwork, the furnishings hark back to mid-century trends, and the glossy bathrooms wouldn't look out of place in a spa. Our favourite part, however, has to be the long kitchen, finished with the sort of sleek surfaces in which you can see your own reflection.

If you're paying a visit during the warmer months, you're sure to fall for the home's plant-filled outdoor space, which, while modestly sized, offers plenty of seating on which to toast the sunset with a bottle bought from a local winery. There's even a barbecue if you want to pair it with some smoky flavours.

In local Healdsburg, you're only two blocks from the downtown area and its restaurants. The wider area is not just reserved for growing grapes, either – there are opportunities to be found for everything from hiking to biking and golfing to watersports.
