If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

This home is clearly a labour of love, and it reflects a lot of the host's personality. There are spaces for meditation and yoga, both indoors and out, and the desert aesthetic has been perfectly captured in the design. A renovated mid-century home, it's minimalist and charming. Outside, you have a grill and a hot tub, which is a great spot for watching the stars move across the clear desert skies. All of that’s without even mentioning the location. You can walk into Joshua Tree Village, which has several excellent cafes and restaurants, and if you drive ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll reach the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.


Mojave Haus

There are several things that lift this Orange studio apartment above its peers. The elegant mid-century furnishings dotted throughout the space bring a touch of class, and the grey colour palette feels particularly en vogue. 

Come the summer months, there's a private balcony space surrounded by greenery where you can sit out and soak up the glorious Californian sunshine. But, perhaps best of all, there are communal facilities galore in the building, from a glistening swimming pool and hot tub to shared barbecue grills and lounge areas with plenty of space to knuckle down and work. Oh, and a well-equipped gym, too. 

While there's enough at the address to keep you distracted, there's also plenty to offer in the local neighbourhood. Highlights include the magic of Disneyland only ten minutes by car, sprawling Oak Canyon Park reachable in twenty, and the OC's surfside cities, all no more than twenty-five minutes away.

The New Black

Bringing together the best of the swinging sixties and the twenty-first century, this mesmerising home is perfect for those wanting to feel like the movie stars who once called Palm Springs their playground. A large, open-plan living area serves as the main social hub in this house, allowing guests to spend quality time together or find a quiet corner to themselves. Adorned with pictures of the first Apollo Mission and decorated with a nod to the glamour of popular James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever (which was filmed at the nearby Elrod House in Palm Springs), there's so much to admire about this home. 

Thanks to the location in the heart of Palm Springs, you’ll be spoilt for restaurant choices and hiking trails. We recommend the fifteen-minute drive to the entrance of Indian Canyons. Here you'll be able to hike to incredible viewpoints before heading back down to stock up the energy levels with tasty cuisine. The traditional french food of Farm is highly commended here, and it's only a four-minute drive from the house. You could spend your days on one of the many famed golf courses in Palm Springs, but we guarantee you'll be spending most of your time in this home's garden. Whether you're splashing around in the swimming pool gauping at views of the mountains, practicing your swing on the private putting green, or sitting around the fire pit telling stories long into the night, it will be hard to tear yourself away from this wonderful space.

We’re willing to bet that some good-natured individual watched a rainbow materialise in the sky, grabbed a handful of the resulting magic, threw it in a gift box wrapped in serenity and released it into this home. With eye-catching custom murals and generous touches of blue all around, you’ll find yourself in an oasis as exuberant as the outdoors of Palm Springs that Hollywood stars can’t seem to get enough of. 

The home is a mid-century modern delight, and you’ll find a library with a lounge just for reading, a pool terrace dotted with energising palm trees and sensational views of the mountains, and a games room made for indulging in some friendly competition with your fellow guests. There are cacti, desert and mountain views aplenty in this fabulous home in the heart of the Yucca Valley. Just over six kilometres from the Joshua Tree Visitor Centres and nearby cafes, and even closer to the nearest desert museum, you get the full Joshua Tree experience without being completely cut off from civilisation. The house is set on a five-acre plot and decorated in the laid-back and comfortable style you'd expect. While the home is equipped with all the usual mod cons, it's retained plenty of quaint charm with wood-panelled walls, a record player and retro games console sitting alongside a lightning-fast internet connection and various streaming options. There's also a separate casita ideal for couples. We loved the wicker mirrors, wall hangings, hammock-style hanging seats and the peaceful, minimalist bedroom interiors. Outside you'll find a wood-fired hot tub ideal for chilly evenings and a pink stucco in-ground pool for afternoons. When you're not neck-deep in water, the wooden seating area and firepit is a perfect place to admire the pink and red sunset skies.

Cactus Sunshine

A home for California swell chasers to search out, this home will have you in the water in no time, with the sands of San Clemente a five-minute drive from your front door and some of SoCal's best beach breaks within an hour's drive.

However, that's not to say that if you're not a surf pro, you won't find something for you here. Your host provides some boogie boards for the kids and beach chairs for a slightly more sedate experience down at the beach. But a stay here isn't just about the coastline, with hiking trails, pristine golf courses, and shopping are all a stone's throw away. 

The vibrant home itself shouldn’t go without a mention – its shared roof terrace makes for a wonderful spot to watch the sunset over the sea. Indoors, the coastal inspiration is clear. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.
